in many cities, citizens face huge challenges to meet their basic needs of survival, including shelter, access to food, water and warmth. once these are met, the human need for community, managing society and moving from “a to b” take on far greater importance. ~ john batten, global cities director / arcadis global

[ people planet profit ] note, edited for clarity and brevity
the sci ranks 100 global cities on three pillars of sustainability: people (social), planet (environmental) and profit (economic).

performance across the people pillar is relatively consistent across the top 50 cities. edinburgh tops the sub-index. affordability of city life, access to public transport and income inequality are the big swing variables.

there’s a real shortage of housing. that’s why house prices and trending prices are sky high. you pay a lot of money for not a lot of space. ~ kirsten, 27, amsterdam, netherlands

a group of smaller european cities led by stockholm, sit at the top of the planet pillar. determinants of a high ranking include low carbon energy infrastructure and significant green spaces. for the top 10 cities, a leading indicator of investment is in low-carbon infrastructure, all of these cities have made significantly larger investments in including bike sharing and electric vehicle incentives – highlighting the rapid adoption of these solutions in many cities.

above > stockholm

the profit pillar measures the economic health of a city, incorporating indicators that reflect the productive capacity of cities today, as well as the presence of infrastructure and regulatory enablers that support growth and prosperity in the present and the future. the profit sub-index highlights the extreme disparities in income. the top of the sub-index is dominated by global financial centers. singapore, london and hong kong head up the list and hold a sizeable lead over new york in 4th place.

above > singapore / courtesy arcadis

london is ranked the world’s most sustainable city in 2018 has high scores in the people and profit pillars. the results highlight that strengths reflected in london’s status can offset challenges associated with affordability and congestion. stockholm, edinburgh, singapore and vienna complete the top five in the index.

new york, san francisco and seattle are the only u.s. cities in the top 20. two additional cities, tokyo and sydney, are lower – ranking high for people, but need to improve in both profit and planet.

above > new york

although coastal cities including new york and seattle feature in the top 20, most u.s. cities fall in the bottom half of the ranking. u.s. cities tend to score evenly across the three pillars, highlighting that these cities face broad challenges across all pillars to improve their sustainability.

in latin america, santiago, são paulo, mexico city and buenos aires are all tightly clustered at the top of the bottom quartile, typically scoring better in people and planet than in the profit pillar.

kuala lumpur benefits from consistent scores across all pillars and outranks all the cities in china except for shenzhen as well as a number of u.s. and european cities.

low profit performance places major cities across africa and asia are represented in the bottom 10 of the rankings.

[ citizens face huge challenges ]
in many cities, citizens face huge challenges to meet their basic needs of survival, including shelter, access to food, water and warmth. once these are met, the human need for community, managing society and moving from “a to b” take on far greater importance.

cities are powerful engines that bring people together and allow for resource sharing to meet collective needs. our study highlights that emerging needs, such as digital connectivity, are being addressed in cities at all levels of sustainability.

a critical point is that human needs are fundamentally hierarchical in nature. and if certain needs are not met, for example if housing is too expensive, then dissatisfaction will follow. the sci and other studies show that even highly developed cities can struggle to meet the basic needs of their citizens. as a result, the level of peoples’ satisfaction associated with their purpose or well-being are undermined. viewed from a citizen’s perspective, a city that is highly ranked as sustainable but with elevated levels of congestion not meeting accessibility needs, is not truly sustainable.

this points to a series of core challenges for all cities that influence not only how they seek to improve their performance, but also how they prepare for a digitally-driven transformation. it is important to look at how cities maintain services at current levels of performance as they evolve, specifically if they use innovation to ensure that currently recognized needs and wants are met. ~ john batten, global cities director

Function is no object for RO/LU, the St. Paul based studio. According to their website, “RO/LU continues to explore ‘art history as a material’ by starting with very literal information from existing works and reinventing through intuitive connections to others: Superstudio’s Quaderna line, environmental installations by Ettore Sottsass, Scott Burton and James Lee Byars’ utilization of man as a symbol object…

“Surfaces On Which Your Setting and Sitting Will Be Uncertain” is a group of sculptural furniture objects by RO/LU with matching clothing by Various Projects. The objects, made from welded wire mesh, seem to change when one moves in their presence, in some way becoming different with each step taken around them.” The objects, although not “sit worthy,” form an interesting tension between the handmade yet industrial strength of welded steel. The work is on view as the inaugural show at Patrick Parrish Gallery in New York from September 4th through October 4th. Contributors/Team> Matt Olson, Mike Brady with Various Projects.

BMW sound cars at frieze 2013.

May 10, 2013

frieze13-bmw2frieze vip cars

The eye is more powerful than the ear. So the few works of art for the ear ran a good chance of being overwhelmed by the thousands for the eye filling the huge white tent of the Frieze Art Fair, on Randle’s Island, next to Manhattan. These sound pieces pushed their way to the front of attention by sneaking onto the VIP shuttle service cars offered by BMW.

The trio of projects in Frieze Sounds are shown off on the trip from Manhattan to the tent where the fair is held in the solid studio of black BMW 7 Series. They include a trio of audio works by the artists Trisha Baga, Charles Atlas and New Humans, and Haroon Mirza.

frieze13-bmw-trisha1trisha baga [ listen! ]

The artists were chosen by curator Cecilia Alemani, who is also the curator who picks art for the High Line in Manhattan. “Each of the participants has taken a different approach to this brief,” she said before the show. “Trisha Baga will estrange everyday noise; Charles Atlas and New Humans will use their own voices.” The mode of the pieces is auditory collage: Baga’s piece, called Hercules, mixes bits of weather forecasts, movie scores and multiple language phrases.

frieze13-bmw-atlas1charles atlas & the new humans [ listen! ]

The artist Charles Atlas worked with the collective New Humans (Mika Tajima and Howie Chen) in “a new aural experience, utilizing electronically fractured vocals by Atlas and Tajima” producing “a poem-like babble of unrelated words.”

frieze13-bmw-haroon1haroon mirza [ listen! ]

The work by Haroon Mirza sounds like listening to the fair floor itself—because it is. It is based on sampling actual sounds under the tent. Non VIPs can listen to the works through earphones set up in an area of the fair tent, or [ downloaded ]

Interactive light installation by ivan toth depeña.

Jan 30, 2013

reed2click > enlarge

“The Walkers” is the second installation in a series of responsive light window installations by Ivan Toth Depeña, in collaboration with Reed Krakoff. Depeña’s display breaks away from traditional visual merchandising and becomes public art that interacts with New York City pedestrians. The site- specific design features a series of florescent light boxes that respond to the physical presence of passers-by through the implementation of a camera tracking mechanism.

reed1

“The discourse that’s generated through the creation of public art is a source of great inspiration,” explains the artist who has been working increasingly within the area of public art. “These projects break down boundaries by allowing the public to experience art outside of the fixed paradigm of a gallery or institutional sphere.”

Krakoff, an avid collector of contemporary art and design, collaborated with the artist to actualize a public light display that would also be reflective of how his fashion designs relate to art, both in form and philosophy. The Walkers’ aesthetic was inspired by Krakoff’s minimalist approach and color sensibility. The display was installed on 5 January 5, 2013 and is now on view at 831 Madison Avenue.

[ about ivan toth deepeña ]
Ivan Toth Depeña is an artist and designer living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Miami, Florida. With a Masters Degree in Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Depeña’s output as an artist is informed by his experience in art, architecture, technology and design. Combining many sources of media, technology, form and materials, Depeña seeks to blur boundaries and create projects that exist within a new and amorphous hybrid of various creative disciplines. His studio output includes (and often fuses together) painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, public art, installation and incorporates a hands on methodology combined with high tech output and fabrication.

His recent public art projects and exhibitions include, “Reflect,” a permanent light-based installation for the Stephen Clark Government Center Lobby in Miami, “Aesthetics and Values 2011” at the Frost Museum in Miami, “Miami in Transition” at the Miami Art Museum and various group and solo exhibitions throughout the US.
