lochside house riba 2018 house of the year. haysom ward miller architects

[ architect’s brief ] the very energy-efficient structure uses highly-insulated SIP panels, prefabricated to minimize transport an materials. the cladding is scottish larch, charred by the contractor using a variation of the traditional japanese shou sugi ban technique to achieve a naturally varied rich color and improved durability. the house will be completely off-grid, with its own water supply, sewage treatment, and electrical system, all designed to minimize energy use.

the modular form of the house, made up of three simple, pitched-roofed volumes, reduces the apparent scale and height of the roofs and allows sections to be isolated and left unheated when not required. the scale of thew individual sections relates to that of small buildings and shelters that have stood on the peninsula in the past, the ruins of which still remain. the design does not try to copy the style of existing buildings in the area but its straightforward use of local stone and timber and simple forms are common with the traditional craft houses and agricultural buildings in the highlands

the intention is that the development should have minimal impact upon the natural flora and fauna and will instead leave it as undisturbed as possible. rather than surrounding the house with conventional domestic garden planting, the natural materials of the house sit in the natural landscape and, as the ground level falls away to the southeast, terminate with a deck or jetty above the unspoiled surrounding site. new planting will use native species chosen only to reestablish those that have been suppressed by invasive rhododendron or grazing, and to introduce a little more ecological diversity. as the process of clearing rhododendron continues, it is believed that other species should be able to reclaim much of the site with only minimal help – small scots pine seedings are already established and need only protection from grazing. the existing birch, alder, and larch will be augmented, with more planting of native heathers and juniper to add to the diversity of the lower story. yellow flag iris will be introduced to the existing boggy area to the east of the house. the flat ‘green’ roof connecting the pitched volumes will be planted with some of the same mix of sedums, sea pink, and other species found on the rocks nearby.

the scale and siting of the buildings, tucked into a natural fold in the land and designed around the existing established trees, has been carefully considered so that the building feels an integrated part of its surroundings from the outset – a modest and sustainable home that makes the most of, and has minimal impact upon, its very special location.

limited edition prefab pavilions by zaha hadid and gluckman tang. design miami/ 2015.

limited edition prefab pavilions by zaha hadid and gluckman tang. design miami/ 2015.

Dec 4, 2015

[ revolution ] developed and introduced by real estate developer and art collector robbie antonio, revolution is a collection of limited edition, pre-crafted properties, including homes and pavilions. the project unites over 30 of the world’s preeminent architects, artists and designers with a network of cutting-edge technologies and cost-efficient production systems, democratizing high-design and architecture. the first series of pre-fabricated pavilions have been launched including daniel libeskind-the recreation pavilion, kengo kuma-the aluminum cloud pavilion, sou fujimoto-the infinity ring pavilion, ben van berkel- the ellipsicoon retreat pavilion. most recently and seen at design miami 2015 is zaha hadid- volu and gluckman tang-the model art pavilion. the pieces are displayed by etn design, a new company of new york art dealer edward taylor nahem.

dm15-revolution-modelart1

[ model art pavilion ] conceived by gluckman tang is a simple, elegant structure to experience art in any location – from a beach to a roof deck to a global art fair. it is a sculptural object and a frame for the dynamic presentation of art. the pavilion is made of lacquered solid wood, plywood, and translucent polycarbonate. it comfortably accommodates several paintings or sculptures and a small group of people. the interior is a clean white box, while the exterior is available in a range of colors. slots at the edges of the space introduce reflected, diffuse daylight; access is through a sliding door. like all gluckman tang’s spaces for art, such as the museo picasso málaga and the georgia o’keeffe museum, this compact pavilion elegantly mediates the relationship between the space, the viewer, and the art object. the potential uses of this pre-crafted pavilion extend beyond the art world — it can be used as an intimate music room, meditation space, or work studio. it will be produced in an edition of 10, each priced at $130,000.

dm15-zha-volu2

[ volu ] is the name of zaha hadid and patrik schumacher‘s design is a fusion of design, lightweight engineering, and precision fabrication. it is a result of tight integration of computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing. the strong silhouette of the pavilion, along with the careful coordination of features, materials, and colors is complemented by the bespoke design of the furniture. the design continues a rational, geometric production by embedding the tectonics of manufacture within the form itself.

this limited edition is comprised of a series of structural bands collecting at the spine and expanding overhead, the patterning of the pavilion’s structure and shade structures are guided by the varied structural loading conditions. through analysis of the geometry under load, the pavilion’s topology is digitally re-crafted and optimized to remove unnecessary material, resulting in the lightest possible design solution. this organic structural logic recreates the very same principles found in nature. an edition of 24 priced at $480,000 – it is after all zaha hadid.

volu is installed inside the collector’s lounge at this year’s design miami fair. the sculptural table by janne kyttanen (works also seen at galerie vivid) and loopy chairs by arandalasch.

shanghai15-logo1design shanghai 2015 | 27 > 30 march 2015 | shanghai exhibition centre

the second edition of design shanghai, will take place march 2015 and will include over 300 exhibitors across three halls; contemporary design, classic design, and collectible design. featured among the confirmed installations is jean prouvé’s demountable house, a rare early example of prefabricated housing.

shanghai15-JeanProuve1
shanghai-prouve3

french architect jean prouvé is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most influential designers, and is known for combining bold elegance with economy of means in a socially conscious manner. he is also recognized for his manufacturing firm, les ateliers jean prouvé, where he designed and produced lightweight metal furniture in collaboration with some of the most well known designers of the time. one such designer was pierre jeanneret, a swiss architect and furniture designer who often worked with his more famous cousin, le corbusier.

demountable house designed in 1944 was originally created as an emergency shelter for the displaced inhabitants of the lorraine region of france during wwii. when swiss luxury brand bally acquired this rare work, it was very damaged and in need of repair. now, the house has been restored to its pristine condition by a 12-person team, just in time to celebrate its 70th anniversary this year.

prouvé believed his manufactured home could serve as a model for future design in prefabrication and stated,“there is a need for manufactured homes. (…) prefabricated
houses, they are the new dadaism. but why factory made?
because it is no longer about just about making one or more
small elements of a home to be assembled, but making all the
elements correspond to those of a machine that is mounted
entirely mechanically, without necessity of producing anything on-site. (…) we must show the public that the manufactured home is a comfortable home, and overcome routine.”

shanghai-jeanerret1
showcased alongside an original furniture collection by pierre jeanneret, the two works taken together represent bally’s commitment to art and design as well as the brand’s early modernist roots. the iconic house has recently been part of a travelling exhibition and will be delivered as a kit of parts for the first time in asia and assembled on site by a team of french experts. two metal gantries support three sections of the roof beam, which in turn support the mountings for the wall and roof panels. treated spruce panels nailed to a metal frame form the structure of the walls, while wooden window frames and a corrugated iron roof complete the building’s exterior shell.

[ prologue by swarovski and fredrikson stallard ]

shanghai15-swarovski1

‘prologue’, the latest collaborative work between swarovski london-based designers fredrikson stallard, is to make its debut at design shanghai.

originally shown in raw steel and gold crystal at art basel 2014 (hong kong and basel), ‘prologue’ is a monumental circular sculpture measuring 4m in diameter and holding over 8,000 swarovski crystal droplets within a patinated steel frame. for design shanghai, the designers will recreate the work in galvanized steel and pale blue crystal to symbolize water, our most precious and fundamental resource, to mark the 15th anniversary of the swarovski waterschool program.

‘prologue’ will be placed at the entrance to design shanghai, its luminous ring acting as a bright blue beacon to visitors, welcoming them and drawing them into the grand entrance of the iconic shanghai exhibition centre. the work, which plays with light by transforming and transmuting its environment throughout the day, will be available for private purchase in a limited edition of eight sculptures. swarovski will exhibit in contemporary design hall, e-98 and e-100 [ fredrikson & stallard ] [ swarovski ]

[ dragon chronophage by john c taylor ]
british inventor responsible for the thermostat found in today’s electric kettles, dr john c taylor obe will be exhibiting one of the most innovative clocks, the dragon chronophage, at the collectible design hall at design shanghai 2015.

shanghai-clock1

the 450kg dragon chronophage – which translates from latin as ‘time eater’ – is made of gold-plated stainless steel, formed using a special underwater explosion technique. through the use of concentric circles on the face, the seconds, minutes and hours are shown in a way that’s never been seen before.

created by dr taylor in tandem with professor long of the hangzhou art university, the chronophage is a physical interpretation of einstein’s idea of relative time: each minute may go quickly or slowly – even stopping altogether – but every five minutes the clock catches up with ‘real’ time.

every hour the specially designed mechanical dragon escapement on the dragon chronophage reveals and swallows a pearl, a chinese symbol of good luck.

let´s go on a journey of light from the oldest memories of the universe, from distant galaxies, bridging thousands of lightyears to the image of the sun in a single drop of water; from streams of electricity to the tiny electrons operating the internet – our world is vibrating with flows of immaterial energy.

our work “spark” explores this illuminant state of culture examining light, the ambivalent promethean medium: a symbol of innovation and change aswell as the archetype for safety and warmth. let us follow it’s mysterious duality between creation and destruction, comfort and threat, waves and particles – let us illuminate our world with the spark.

C3 prefab project. Chicago.

Oct 6, 2011

The C3 Prefab project, is a prototypical example a prefabricated sustainable residence (Chicago’s first) constructed in an urban environment.

C3 sets a high standard for energy efficiency by surpassing the current energy code by 54%, and becoming the first model for sustainable, affordable housing in Chicago. Reducing the upfront cost of housing is only part of the equation. The compounded savings by reducing energy usage gives homeowners an additional $282,000 at 10% over a 30-year period.

The C3 was designed to meet the LEED Platinum and Energy Star standards with low-tech, common sense solutions in lieu of expensive gadgetry. Many materials used were sustainably harvested as well as sourced through local vendors to encourage economic growth within the region. To date, this project has received Energy Star.

Relative to this project, the word ʻprefabʼ means that portions of the home were constructed off-site and shipped to the project location once the foundation and utilities were prepared. There are many prefab benefits. There’s a higher level of quality control within a factory setting. No “bad weather” means year-round, simultaneous construction for speedier delivery and timelines are more predictable. And an economy of labor and material Reducing labor and through the use of repetitive assembly lines and volume purchasing.

[ sustainable materials | benefits ]
• Uses 54% less energy and produces 64% less emissions then a comparable home. • Energy savings of over 70% in water heating costs due to solar thermal panels and on-demand water heating.
• Recycled content, low-maintenance exterior siding (galvalume corrugated and fiber cement board), and reclaimed barnwood siding.
• Low-VOC water based sealants and finishes; cabinetry and woodwork that contain no formaldehyde or toxic binders.
• Water-conserving plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient appliances and lighting; at least 80% of lighting is either compact fluorescent or LED.
• Recycled/sustainably harvested flooring (hickory and cork).
• Efficient floor plan with high ceilings and substantial natural light and ventilation reduce lighting and heating/cooling loads.
• Ductless, high-efficiency heating & air conditioning system provides quiet operation and controlled zoning for higher level of interior comfort.
• Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) provides continuous outdoor air circulation without energy loss.
• Natural native landscaping provides minimal maintenance and utilizes reclaimed storm water for irrigation.
• Roof is designed for future roof deck, vegetated green space, and photovoltaic (electricity producing) solar panels.
• All wood framing is FSC certified.

Glass house revisited.

Feb 19, 2010

the glass house or johnson house, built in 1949 in new canaan, connecticut, was designed by philip johnson as his own residence.

On June 23, 2007, a few quiet groups began arriving in New Canaan, Conn., to tour Philip Johnson’s modernist home, the Glass House–the first official tours of the property in more than 50 years. The house, the centerpiece of an estate that Johnson added to over the years, is a 56-foot-long box.

“The house forms a nucleus of 40- acre landscaped complex that contain many other structures. Michael Moran’s photographs present the Glass House in this greater context, and demonstrate that neither part – the house nor its surroundings – would make sense alone”. Hilary Lewis, Philip Johnson’s biographer.

we are reminded that along with the farnsworth house, the glass house is also a national trust for historic preservation ( NTFHP ) site.

Middle colors humidifier.

Nov 4, 2008

For many of our readers, winter is just around the corner. And that may mean it’s time to trade the A/C unit for a humidifier. Here is a cute one.
Designed by Takashi Hiroshi Tsuboi, the tear-drop shaped humidifier is ultrasonic and can produce moisture for up to ten consecutive hours. If you speak Japanese or knows someone who does you are in luck as they aren’t yet available in the U.S. But it would make a great gift for someone you really care about, and you too!
