Our friends from Bookman, the Swedish bicycle accessory brand Bookman and German Notabag are bringing you the Notabag Reflective Bag & Backpack this Fall. The product is a clever combination of a bag and a backpack made from high visibility reflective material. With a pull of the straps it quickly transforms from a bag to a backpack and is ideal for cyclists since its design lets you use both hands for riding. The Reflective Bag & Backpack makes the cyclist really stand out on the street at night, and it also works great for pedestrians and skaters.

“Dieter Rams’ Ten Principles of Good Design were my mantra during the process of developing Notabag. I’m somewhat obsessed with simplicity and functionality, and wanted to apply that approach to every aspect of Notabag.” Adnan Alicusic, founder of Notabag.

“When Adnan approached us with his enthusiastic personality and showed us the Notabag, I knew right away that I wanted to do something together with him. The Notabag was already near perfect but making it reflective adds a useful function for cyclists. Not only does it enhance safety, but it also gives the bag a sharp look both in daylight and when lit up by beams of headlights.” Mattis Bernstone, Creative Director of Bookman.

The Notabag Reflective Bag & Backpack is available from [ bookman ] [ notabag ] and selected retailers worldwide from October 2015. RRP: €30/$35.

Dieter rams finally comes to asia.

Nov 28, 2011

When I think of Asia I think of a lot of people and a little space. To me, these are ideal conditions for simple and creative design solutions. I think: minimal design for maximum impact. Of course, my homeboy Dieter Rams comes to mind immediately, which is probably why I was so surprised to learn that Asia has never payed tribute to him. Not officially, anyway, as in a museum retrospective or gallery show. At least not until now. At long last, Singapore-based studio Anonymous is hosting plusminusten, an exhibition showcasing the work of ten graphic designers who were asked to create posters based on Rams’ ten principles for good design. (Click here for a refresher.)

“Curator Felix Ng also emphasizes the principle that “good design is thorough, down to the last detail” by tapping Singapore’s cult music producer Nick Chan (the brains behind experimental group Muon) to create a soundtrack purposely for the exhibition.” Yeah, you might hope for more than a poster show for the first ever Asian Rams exhibition, but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

Dieter rams new book. Phaidon.

Jul 21, 2011

“My goal is to omit everything superfluous so that the essential is shown to best possible advantage.”
Dieter Rams, 1980

Dieter Rams, head of Braun and its prominent designer for forty years, believed that exceptional design is simple design, both visually appealing and functionally sound, relieved of any non-essentials. “As Little Design As Possible” by Sophie Lovell brilliantly shares the relevance of his work in today’s design climate in this beautifully illustrated, eight hundred-page paperback.

The book includes interviews with influential industrial designers, such as Naoto Fukasawa, Sam Hecht and Jasper Morrison, who speak to the cultural significance of his design and its timeless quality. Thorough and hypnotizing with well-written texts in both English and German, “As Little As Possible” also illustrates never-before-seen prototypes of unrealized products and engineering models that reveal his design process.

Few designers have been as prolific yet as modest as Rams. Back to purity, back to simplicity: our lives improve when we embrace as little design as possible.

Overview

>A comprehensive monograph on highly influential product designer Dieter Rams (b.1932). As head of design at Braun from 1961 to 1995, Rams created some of the most iconic objects of the twentieth century

>A detailed text covering Rams’ life, the intellectual context in which he worked, his designs for Braun and Vitsoe, and the ideas and lectures he developed as an advocate for good design

>Includes a foreword by Jonathan Ive, head of design at Apple Inc.

>Sketches and photographs of finished products and prototypes provide insight into Rams’ design process; diverse archival material and photographs give a complete picture of his life and work

>Includes newly-commissioned photographs of Dieter Rams’s house and the Braun archive: a never-before-seen glimpse of the world’s most complete collection of Rams’s designs

Braun watches. The first and the latest.

Apr 25, 2011

with braun, everything begins with a history lesson. [click all images to enlarge]

braun is relaunching a new line of wristwear (above) designed by zeon. what zeon kept was minimal and functional, one recessed button and a distinctive scroll wheel is all you get, we think. also comes in silver. the new watch is still under development, so details are few. zeon says the watch should be released in the fall.

aw10 / dietrich lubs / 1989

above: braun’s first quartz analog aw10, designed by dietrich lubs in 1989.

above: braun’s first watch, the dw20 (1977) by rams / lubs. unfortunately due to the many problems experienced with the LCD module it was only in production for a year before being replaced by the dw30.

above: the watch dieter rams gave me in 1993 (right) when he gave a lecture at the art institute of chicago.

note: the ab20 alarm clock (1975) by rams / lubs set the basic design for subsequent clocks and watches from braun. braun watches and clocks until the new zeon watch (2011) never looked sleek and stylish but always modern, pure, and timeless.

good design is as little design as possible

Dieter Rams (born May 20, 1932 in Wiesbaden) is a German industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun and the Functionalist school of industrial design.

In 1993 I asked Dieter to speak to the Architecture & Design Society at the Art Institute of Chicago. The society recently had a name change: “design” had been added. We joked ( ahem ) at the time that the real estate economy was so bad that the Architecture Society needed new members. We needed a credible and passionate design icon to speak to this group. Dieter became the first designer to speak under the society’s new name.

What I remember that night and again recently while watching the Objectified movie was Dieter’s 10 design principles. Honestly, I can’t tell you for sure that these are the same principles. Hoping Dieter will set the story straight.

I think I like the earlier stuff better. Maybe it was the materials or maybe it was so different than the pack at the time. The first Braun product I remember making a design connect to me was an electric razor. Much of Dieter’s work has long seemed more connected to brutalism than minimalism. Let’s say beautifully, brutally, minimal.

* Good design is innovative
* Good design makes a product useful
* Good design is aesthetic
* Good design helps us to understand a product
* Good design is unobtrusive
* Good design is honest
* Good design is durable
* Good design is consequent to the last detail
* Good design is concerned with the environment
* Good design is as little design as possible
