Buckminster fuller & norman foster at design miami 2011.

Dec 13, 2011

architect norman foster

The installation, a Miami Design District Dacra Project with in-kind support from The Buckminster Fuller Institute and Phillips, was on view during Design Miami/ in an open air space at 39th street and 1st Court, Dec 1 – 4, 2011. The exhibition set the stage for further evolution of these ideas and structures and included both the dome and the car; a series of films about Fuller and Foster; and a talk between renowned architect Norman Foster, his wife Elena Foster and W Magazine Editor-in-Chief, Stefano Tonchi, who spoke on Fuller’s influence on their lives and work as part of Design Miami’s Design Talks series.

systems theorist, author, designer, inventor, and futurist buckminister fuller.

The exhibition, Architecting the Future: Buckminster Fuller & Norman Foster conceived and curated by DRDesign and Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Director of The Buckminster Fuller Institute was inspired by the photo of Bucky and the opportunity to ‘re-boot’ history by bringing the car and Foster to the exhibition — to, in the power of a single image, create a convergence of past & present to imagine a new future.

Inspired in part by their decade-long relationship – Foster has brought Fuller’s omni-directional approach, and world-around focus into the 21st century and beyond. The legacies of these two men entwined, set against a backdrop of radical innovation – still way ahead of our time.

The Fly’s Eye Dome will be permanently installed nearby in the Miami Design District.

[ About the Fly’s Eye Dome ]
“The Fly’s Eye domes are designed as components of a ‘livingry’ service. The basic hardware components will produce a beautiful, fully equipped, air-deliverable house that weighs and costs about as much as a good automobile. Not only will it be highly efficient in its use of energy and materials, it also will be capable of harvesting incoming light and wind energies.“ – R. Buckminster Fuller

[ About the Dymaxion Car ]
Patented in 1937, and conceived as an ‘omni-directional transport system’, Fuller’s Dymaxion car was intended to fly, jump-jet style, when suitable alloys and engines became available. Three cars were produced in his lifetime. [ design miami/ 2011 ]

Architect luis pons designs “chapel.”

Dec 9, 2011

“Chapel” an organically shaped, meditation chamber designed by architect Luis Pons is part of Inventory 02: Soul Does Matter, an exhibition showcasing the work of a provocative group of designers who embrace the concept of limited production manufacturing. The exhibition, which attracted a lot of attention during Art Basel Miami Beach, will be on view in the Buena Vista Building, 189 NE 39 Street #120, in the Miami Design District through 19 December 2011.

“Chapel” offers a relaxed interior for one to four people and is pre-programmed by the facilitator to support the users’ individual needs during daily sessions. Upon entry users experience a period of meditation, during which the chapel’s integrated lighting, sound, and aroma therapeutic scent systems are set to create a calming atmosphere. Meditation is followed by activation of the video-conferencing mode, during which users engage in a two-way communication with an energy expert via the Chapel’s Internet connected state-of-the-art video conferencing system. Sessions close with the Chapel returning once again to a meditation atmosphere for a period of time. When users leave the Chapel low-level lighting gently illuminates the interior until the next session begins.

“In the Chapel we leave the distractions and chatter of the everyday world behind. Here we are able to embrace and enhance our ability to reconnect to the energy source that is within ourselves and always available in the universe,” says Pons. “The chapel’s organic shape is a symbol of life itself. Like a cocoon, it is a source of, and protective space for, birth, rebirth, renewal, and growth.”

The 18’ x 12’ x 9’ structure is fabricated from 69 elliptical panels crafted from translucent white fabric that was custom designed, creating a soft oval interior space. This interior space sits on an oval platform made of acrylic light cast cotton. A custom designed sofa bench offering seating for up to four people inside the Chapel is oriented toward a 42” audio/video LED display with integrated speakers. The audio/visual system includes an Apple Mac mini control processor and computer, an HD web camera with a microphone, and an iPod Touch. A high-performance LED lighting system can be programmed to bathe the interior in various lighting schemes.

[ about the exhibition ]
Curated by Thais Fontenelle, Soul Does Matter is the second exhibition from Inventory and features an array of design objects in a range of mediums and disciplines. The show is presented with the intent to explore themes centered on the interplay between the material and the intangible personality of design objects. The highly disparate limited edition pieces that comprise the show reflect the unique visions and worldviews of their respective designers yet unify around the shared theme.

Artist vincent dubourg wins PAD inaugural award.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery artist Vincent Dubourg’s work, Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland – a black steel buffet table cut and bent at one end to look frayed – has won a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design. The award, the first of its kind, was announced on November 10 at a dinner honoring the best of the inaugural Pavilion of Arts and Design New York fair.

Commenting on Dubourg’s win, Loic Le Gaillard co-founder and director of Carpenters Workshop Gallery (CWG), based in London and Paris, said of Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland,  “It’s got everything—emotion, beautiful craftsmanship. It’s wonderful to see a piece of design can stretch way beyond what one would expect for a piece of furniture.” Carpenters Workshop Gallery is renowned as one of the world‘s foremost contemporary design-art galleries. “That’s the beauty of our mission, to really push these young guys into the spotlight. It’s a constant battle to show how great all these young artists are,” Le Gaillaird said of Dubourg and the other artists represented by CWG.

Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland was designed and crafted by Dubourg in 2009. The work is more of a sculpture than a piece of furniture. Dubourg’s conversations through his sculptural works reflect a dialogue between traditions and nature. The embodiment of the materials and their synthesis of versatility in Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland deconstruct the archetypes of furniture. By releasing their origins from their natural elements, and by directing its forms with artisanal craftsmanship, the artist presents sculptural works through an alert explosion of intention.

The 2011 PAD New York Jury Panel included Adam Lindemann, Collector / Writer, Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, Christophe Navarre, President of Moet-Hennessy, Anne Pasternak, Executive Director of Creative Time, Beth Rudin De Woody, Collector/ Trustee of Whitney Museum, Andre Balazs, Developer and Entrepreneur, Hamish Bowles, European Editor at Large of Vogue USA, Muriel Brandolini Developer and Entrepreneur, Decorator, Peter M. Brant Industrialist, Businessman and Entrepreneur, Miranda Brooks, Landscape Garden Designer, Michael Bruno, 1st Dibs Founder, Tory Burch Fashion Designer and Accessories, Robert Couturier, Architecture/ Decorator, Alexandra Driscoll, Collector-Historian,  Ben Genocchio Editor in Chief Art + Auction, Wendy Goodman, Design Writer ,  Bill Katz,  Architect,  Carlos Mota, International Editor at Large AD America, Rodman Primack, Art Consultant and Founder of Blacklots, Renee Rockefeller, Philanthropist, Aby Rosen, Real Estate and Collector, Allison Sarofim, Collector Opinion Maker, Sixty Six Productions, Annabelle Seldorf, Architect,  George Simon, Managing Director of Monsoon Accessories USA Inc., Stefano Tonchi, Editor in Chief of W Magazine and Alan Wasenberg Architect, Decorator and Collector.

Some of the works shown by CWG at PAD New York include Sebastian Brajkovic, whose artworks are included in the permanent collection of the New York‘s Museum of Arts and Design. Brajkovic is showing new conceptions from his notorious Lathe Collection. Mathieu Lehanneur, of France, is presenting S.M.O.K.E., a glass orb that encapsulates the diffusion of a plume of smoke, and Daylight Dome, a state-of-the-art light-sculpture/chandelier. Dutch design duo Lonneke Gordijn & Ralph Nauta continue with their wildly successful Fragile Futures series showcasing Fragile Futures 3.10 light sculptures. Multidisciplinary art collective, Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) is presenting Jubilee Tree and two pieces from their latest series of sculptural design objects including the lighting piece Jewel and dressoir Forest.

Pappa Mamma Lamp by Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) was also a Jury Panel favorite. AVL is merging art and life, using it as a tool to explore the idea of conception through the Pappa Mamma Lamp, complete with Penis, Vagina and Foetus. This lamp is a provocative illustration of the beginnings of human life. An oversized cross-section of reproductive organs is the substance of Pappa Mamma Lamp. It rests on the scrotum and ovaries as the phallussits inside the vagina and a growing baby lies curled up in the womb from which the lamp is powered. [ avl ]

David adjaye. 2011 Designer of the year award.

Sep 8, 2011

photographer ed reeve

Just alerted, Design Miami/, the global forum for design, is pleased to announce that David Adjaye, OBE, Principal Architect of Adjaye Associates, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Designer of the Year Award.

Each December, the Design Miami/ Designer of the Year Award recognizes an internationally renowned architect, designer, or studio whose body of work demonstrates unmatched quality, innovation and influence, while expanding the boundaries of design. The Designer of the Year must demonstrate a consistent history of outstanding work, along with a significant new project, career milestone, or other noteworthy achievement within the previous twelve months. Past Designer of the Year winners include Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson, Tokujin Yoshioka, the Campana Brothers, Maarten Baas, and Konstantin Grcic.

Adjaye’s use of architecture as a catalyst for generating community, his novel application of materials, and his diverse catalogue of projects that intersect architecture, design and art, complement Design Miami’s objective of creating a forum that advances the discourse surrounding experimental design while encouraging visitors to connect and exchange ideas within its venue.

“Winning Designer of the Year is huge for me,” says Adjaye. “To win an award like this from the design community is really significant because so much of my work is about crossing platforms. Being recognized this year–which culminates in all of the work and research I’ve been doing in Africa–is extremely meaningful.”

installation pavilion “genesis”

Adjaye was chosen by a diverse selection committee comprising individuals who significantly impact international design discourse: Maarten Baas, Baas & Den Herder Studio; Daniel Charny, Design Curator and Critic; Pierre Doze, Design Critic; Marianne Goebl, Director for Design Miami/; Brooke Hodge, Hammer Museum; Ellen Lupton, Maryland Institute of College of Art & Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; Ravi Naidoo, Design Indaba & Interactive Africa; Deyan Sudjic, Design Museum London; Noriko Takiguchi, Design Critic; Alexander von Vegesack, Vitra Design Museum & Boisbuchet.

Based in London, with offices in Berlin and New York City, Adjaye is one of the world’s leading architects. His ingenious use of materials and unique ability to showcase light coupled with his democratized approach to the architectural process have helped establish his reputation as an architect with an artist’s sensibility and vision. His many worldwide projects include the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO (winner of the 2011 First Prize Public Buildings IX ARCHIP International Architecture Award); The Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, CO; the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway; flood-resistant houses in New Orleans for Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation; and the Stirling Prize-nominated Idea Stores in London, England. Adjaye’s current projects include the design of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American Culture and History (NMAACH) on the National Mall in Washington, DC, set to open in 2015.

David Adjaye’s belief in working together with artists and other cultural thinkers has led to a number of notable collaborations on both building projects as well as exhibitions. The practice established its early reputation with a series of private houses where the artist was client, and this dialogue continues with recent public buildings, exhibitions and research projects. Adjaye Associates was responsible for: the exhibition design of the all-video SITE Santa Fe Eighth International Biennial Exhibition “the dissolve” (2010); Olafur Eliasson’s “Your black horizon” light installation at the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); and Chris Ofili’s “The Upper Room” exhibited (1999-2002 and 2010), which is now in the permanent collection of Tate Britain. david adjaye on “genesis”
Designed to provide visitors with an immersive experience, Genesis is a complete environment, which integrates enclosure, aperture, views, respite, meditation and community. Like a giant piece of architectural furniture, the Design Miami/ commission has enabled Adjaye to combine structure, seating, window and doors into a single gesture for the first time.

The pavilion is a triangular prism measuring 10m x 10m x 10m x 3.6m, located at the entrance to the fair. It leads visitors to the courtyard space upon arrival, ushering people inside. It is also the point of departure, and is a final gathering space as visitors leave the fair, with its curved window offering strategic views of the galleries. Comprising a series of timber frames that form the roof, flooring and walls, these elements work together and through compression, provide the overall structure.

The internal space is formed by carving out an oversized ovoid shape from the centre. This distorted shape is set at an angle and abuts the perimeter to form the exit, entrance and window. The seating is established by a secondary subtraction from the interior – which repeats the distorted ovoid, creating a platform along the cut-away timber frames. While compressed and joined together with additional filler pieces, the timber frames are not completely fused. This allows light to filter inside from the exterior and roof, providing a dynamic filigree of light and shadow. Light is further brought inside via an opening in the roof, which acts as a dramatic light well.

Announces strongest sales to date attracting record number of acquisitions for private and public collections.

The sixth edition of Design Miami/ Basel saw a significant increase in sales and attendance throughout its five-day run in Basel, Switzerland June 14-18, 2011. Collectors, curators, critics, designers and enthusiasts from around the globe descended upon the fair to see stunning presentations of blue-chip historical and contemporary design, alongside new commissions from emerging designers.

In total, the fair drew a record 20,500 visitors from throughout Europe, North America, South America and Asia, including collectors Jil Sander, Naomi Campbell, Will Ferrell, Jean-Pierre Lehmann, Peter Brant, George Lindemann, Larry Gagosian, Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, Sir Norman Foster, Dasha Zukhova and Ulla Dreyfus-Best among many others. Numerous designers joined them to represent their work, including Aldo Bakker, Jurgen Bey, Ronan Bouroullec, Beatrice Brovia and Nicolas Cheng, Nacho Carbonell, Pierre Charpin, Formafantasma, Martino Gamper, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Arik Levy, Nicolas Le Moigne, Jerszy Seymour, Suzanne Tick as well as Catherine Prouvé and Marianne Panton of the respective estates.

Design Miami/ Basel’s audience of design devotees enthusiastically navigated the fair’s new layout, arranged in a “scatter” pattern by New York-based architects ArandaLasch. The arrangement embraced spatial eccentricities as a way to encourage guests to move about the show in an entirely new way. In addition, thousands of people from over 130 countries followed the unfolding of the show on the Design Miami/Basel blog.

“With this year’s fair, Design Miami/ Basel has once again demonstrated that it is the world’s most important destination for 20th- and 21st-century collectible design,” said Marianne Goebl, Director of Design Miami/. “The caliber of works shown in the gallery program combined with our strongest sales figures to date stand as a testament to the maturity and quality of this year’s show.”

First time participants Galerie Ulrich Fiedler, presenting work from Bauhaus and de Stijl movements, and Galerie Doria, specialized in work by the Union des Artistes Modernes, were enthusiastically received and complemented the early 20th century offering at the fair. Their sales include a Carlo Mollino chair for €100,000 and the Monofilio chair by Conti/Grassi/Forlani for €35,000 at Ulrich Fiedler and a table by Pierre Chareau for an undisclosed sum at Galerie Doria. Art Deco Galerie Anne- Sophie Duval from Paris sold a pair of Albert Giacometti wall scones and several pieces by Jean-Michel Frank for undisclosed amounts.

Going even further back in history, Paris-based Galerie Perrin (above) sold furniture developed for the Napoleonic campaigns, including a set of two chairs for €45,000 each and a day bed for €100,000.

Rare architectural structures by Jean Prouvé were also amongst the highlights of this year’s fair. Galerie Patrick Seguin (above) presented a museum-quality exhibition of Prouvé’s pre-fabricated structures, including a stunning design performance: a 6x6m demountable house from 1944 was mounted in front of the visitors every day of the fair, revealing the intelligence and beauty of the structure.

Seguin sold Prouvé‘s Salle a Manger, for €140,000 to an American collector and two stools by Pierre Jeanneret for €10,000 each to a collector from South America.

In a booth partially constructed from a schoolhouse designed by Jean Prouvé in 1957, the Paris-based gallery Jousse Entreprise (above) sold a Pierre Jeanneret table for €150,000 and a Charlotte Perriand table for €28,000.

Continuing the trend of strong sales for French design from the 1940s and 1950s, Galerie Downtown François Laffanour (above) sold a Jean Prouvé table and six chairs to a Swiss collector for €120,000, and Galerie Jacques Lacoste sold a Jean Royere Ours Polaire sofa, armchair and pouf for €750,000 to an American collector.

Solo shows allowed the visitors to gain deeper insights in the work of specific designers. New York-based gallery Demisch Danant (above) dedicated its presentation to the French post-war modernist Joseph André Motte and sold a pair of leather chairs (€26,000) as well as a pair of floor lamps for an undisclosed amount, amongst others.

Galerie kreo (above) from Paris sold a bench and console (€28,000 each) as well as a coffee table (€24,000), all from the newly commissioned solo show by Pierre Charpin. The gallery also sold the Frozen Cabinet by Studio Wieki Somers for €38,000 and Konstantin Grcic’s Monroe Champion for €36,000.

Within the first minutes of opening, Johnson Trading Gallery (above) sold two cast bronze tables ($20,000 each) to a US collector, as well as a chair ($35,000), pair of tables ($28,000) and vessel ($18,000) all part of the gallery’s Max Lamb solo show.

Design Miami/ Basel 2011 featured a high number of work with provenance from private and public commissions. Hostler Burrows (above) saw a number of strong sales including a chandelier by Pavo Tynell ($50,000) that was a commission for the Helsinki Stock Exchange. R 20th Century from New York City sold a private commission by Joaquim Tenreiro for an undisclosed sum, as well as a rare dresser by Greta Magnusson Grossman for $60,000.

Todd Merrill Twentieth Century (above) sold a number of pieces including a towering Harry Bertoia gong sculpture, originally commissioned for a Norwegian music hall, to a Chinese artist/collector for an undisclosed sum.

Exhibitors of the Design On/Site program, dedicated to solo shows of cutting-edge contemporary designers, will see their work go to institutional and private collections alike. Particles Gallery sold an Aldo Bakker stool to the Vitra Design Museum. The blankets of Formafantasma’s Colony series, presented by Gallery Libby Sellers (above), will be integrated in the permanent collection of the Dutch Textile Musem in Tilburg. And first-time participant Galerie Maria Wettergren received a number of site-specific commissions for Astrid Krogh’s high-tech textiles.

Freedom and Function: Jonathan Monk, Jürgen Mayer H., Piet Hein Eek, and Joseph Grima

In addition to the gallery program, a regular highlight for Design Miami/ Basel attendees is the fair’s Design Talks, which shed light on topics at the intersection of art, architecture and design. This year’s talks included “The Power of Patronage: Pushing Boundaries through Private Commissions” with participants Alexander S.C. Rower, Max Lamb and Felix Burrichter; “Freedom and Function: Diverse Approaches to Design” with Jonathan Monk, Jürgen Mayer H., Piet Hein Eek, and Joseph Grima; and “Designers of the Future: Conversation Pieces” with Asif Khan, studio juju, mischer’traxler and Joseph Grima.

The 2011 “W Hotels Designers of the Future Award” winners (above), Asif Khan/UK, studio juju/Singapore and mischer’traxler/Austria, stunned the visitors with their site-specific interventions, spanning from an artificial cloud to a tent-structure and a machine, which activated itself to produce a basket when shown attention by the visitors.

Sponsor exhibition highlights included the HSBC Connection Collection IV: Hella Jongerius’ “Daylight”, a new work by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius, commissioned especially for the fair; Swarovski Crystal Palace’s presentation of “Iris” by Fredrikson Stallard, a new collaboration with the London-based design studio; and “The Vitra Design Museum: Zoom: Italian Design and the Photography of Aldo and Marirosa Ballo,” an exhibition of the work of Milanese photographers Aldo Ballo and Marirosa Toscani Ballo.

Design Miami/ Basel confirmed once again that it is the only fair that can assemble the highest caliber of international design galleries for an audience of experienced as well as new collectors. With a unique presentation spanning collectible design from around the world, the June 2011 show proved to be the most successful in the show’s history.
