On 6 September 2013, Vitra acquires Artek. Two venerable and like-minded bastions of avant garde modern furniture agree to partner. How like-minded? The logos may say it all.

[ artek ] Artek was founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was “to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means.” That was the beginning of Artek. The Artek collection comprises design furniture and lighting fixtures by the Nordic masters Alvar Aalto, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Tapio Wirkkala and Eero Aarnio. The latest addition to the portfolio consists of products by Yrjö Kukkapuro. The masterpiece of Kukkapuro, the Karuselli chair, will be re-launched on the market in the beginning of the year 2014. In addition to classics, Artek is also launching new generation design products under the Artek Studio brand. Alvar Aalto’s furniture represents an interpretation of Scandinavian modernism articulated primarily in Finnish birch wood. Wood and functionality are both hallmarks of the Artek collection. The Artek portfolio represents the most comprehensive collection of wooden design furniture in the world. Artek has international sales offices in New York, Berlin, Stockholm and Tokyo. The domestic market accounts for 60% of the company’s turnover, with Artek holding a solid position in the Finnish consumer and contract market. Vitra’s design classics have for a number of years been an important part of Artek’s collection for the Finnish market. Artek operates four stores in Finland, as well as a wide retail network.

All the complaints about Apple’s recent failure to produce innovative design has overlooked its cylindrical Mac Pro type Apple tower of power due out this fall.
This black volcano of computing centers around fan and air shaft in the middle.
With the shell removed it looks a little bit like R2-D2.
But the black tower also suggests that cylindrical black UFO design of the company’s planned new headquarters by lord Norman Foster. That is not just my impression. Writing from
Mac conference recently Dan Ackerman at Cnet noted “The first view we saw was from the top, where the circular design reminded me of Apple’s planned new UFO-like headquarters.”
Of course the Mac Pro also reminds me of a small black metal wastebasket I had in my office for years. [ mac pro ]

BMW rousted grumpy press up early on Monday in New York for the unveiling of its electric car, to sync the event with London and Beijing and make a point about globalism and megacities in the future. The megacity car has become the i3, and goes on sale in Europe in the fall. With a range of 80 to 100 miles and a price of some $42,000, the BMW i3 might be seen as a near competitor to the Chevy Volt. But its carbon fiber is made with sustainable, hydroelectric energy, according to the Governor of Washington state, who was there in person. The factory where it is built in Leipzig uses windpower. BMW boss Norbert Reithofer declared the car meant nothing less than a revolution in urban mobility. He compared the potential impact of replacing traditional cars with the electric ones with the social and business effects from replacing wired phones with mobile phones.
The car has center joining doors, for easier access, and black band that sweeps from hood to rear. The black glass like surface of this band is supposed to evoke the face of a mobile phone: tail lights and and other images appear from its depth when illuminated like images on the phone.
