Superyacht. Zaha hadid.

Superyacht. Zaha hadid.

Zaha Hadid’s latest is a yacht—five yachts, actually, each of them a variant on a family of boats with a fluid, biological look. Each can also be customized in comfort features and other outfittings by the company of Blohm+Voss, which also did a Philippe Starck design earlier.

ZHA_B+V_Birdseye view_128m420-foot concept yacht

The idea of the Unique Circle Yachts allows for variation of a genotype and its phenotypes. The company says, “Zaha Hadid’s design is malleable to suit the very individual wishes and needs of a potential customer.”
Hadid’s office describes the Unique Circle Yachts this way:

The overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals.

Whereas traditional yacht designs adhere to a strict horizontal order, this exoskeleton creates an intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the design. The fluid design language of the master prototype has been applied to the five subsequent 90m variations of the Unique Circle Yachts, creating a design with the highest correlation between the various options.

[ official release ]
The design concept, launched at the latest exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s work at the David Gill Gallery in London, is based around the sculptural form of a master prototype conceived for a 128m yacht. In addition, the Unique Circle Yachts by Zaha Hadid Architects for Blohm+Voss is a family of five individual 90m yachts that creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully-engineered yacht design.

The 90m JAZZ yacht is the first of the five Unique Circle Yachts that has been technically specified and detailed by the naval architects at Blohm+Voss. Its lineage from the 128m master prototype is evident, with further technical refinements to address the specifications required for ocean crossings.

In addition to JAZZ, four further 90m yachts have been designed to fulfil the different requirements and individual requests of their designated owners. Each design will vary in layout according to the owner’s preferences.

The design process was very much a collaborative one, with Blohm+Voss and ZHA working together to address the practical challenges of designing a yacht while remaining true to the design language of the master prototype. The resulting designs are the synergy of Hadid’s design vision and the technical expertise of Blohm+Voss, allowing a flexibility and customisation in the eventual design of the yacht.

“As a dynamic object that moves in dynamic environments, the design of a yacht must incorporate additional parameters beyond those for architecture – which all become much more extreme on water. Each yacht is an engineered platform that integrates specific hydrodynamic and structural demands together with the highest levels of comfort, spatial quality and safety.” explained Zaha Hadid.

Blohm+Voss has the proven experience, the in-house technical expertise, and the capacities to offer tailor-made solutions for the most demanding buyers in the superyacht market. The naval architects of Blohm+Voss are forever pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation. In recent years Blohm+Voss has built many of the world’s most prestigious mega yachts. These include the groundbreaking 394-foot “A “designed by Philippe Starck , the “Eclipse”, designed by Terrence Disdale, which at 533 feet (162.5 m) is the world’s second largest private yacht. Other Blohm + Voss superyacht projects include, the “Mayan Queen IV” and the “Palladium”.

Dr. Herbert Aly, CEO and Managing Partner of Blohm+Voss says: “On an aesthetic level, a superyacht is a great design task as everything is customised down to the last detail. A superyacht is by definition an exercise in total design, where every detail is looked at with attention and refinement. In the past, in the era of steam liners, there has been an attempt of utilising ship building elements in architecture. Zaha Hadid and her team have taken this ethos and created a bold new vision and a new benchmark in the design of superyachts.”

Aly adds: “The idea of the Unique Circle Yachts allows for variation of a genotype and its phenotypes, offering a range of possible solutions based on an cognate platform. As a result Zaha Hadid’s design is malleable to suit the very individual wishes and needs of a potential customer which lies at the heart of Blohm+Voss’ approach to yacht design. The strength of the design lies not just in its functionality and form, but also its effortless adaptability.”

Zaha Hadid Architects and Blohm+Voss have transformed yacht design; creating an innovative concept and developing this vision into a fully seaworthy prototype that offers dynamic new possibilities for naval architecture.

Terrafugia's flying airplane-car.

Mar 20, 2012

click > enlarge

In just a few weeks the New York Auto Show will be upon us. We’ll see lots of new technology and many new products in the EV market, I suspect, but not all exhibitors are going the practical route. Terrafugia, an American transportation research and production organization will debut “Transition,” the first mass produced airplane that converts into a street legal car.

I suppose you could make the case that the Transition, which can reach a max speed of 115mph, is actually very practical in that it’s two modes of transportation in one. It seems remarkably easy to use. To take off from the road you need at least 26′ 6″ on the sides for the wings to unfold and about 1,700 feet of road to speed up on. With the push of a button, the wings automatically lower and after 30 seconds you’re clear for takeoff.

The best part is it runs off regular unleaded gas, using about 5 gallons per hour at 105mph in the air, and getting about 35 mpg on the road. The first models are scheduled for production in late 2012. About a hundred are already reserved, and the exposure of the Auto Show will, no doubt, bring in more orders. More technical specs are available on Terrafugia‘s site. [ an update! ]

Chicago basketball follower here so we know these things. There’s the North Carolina-blue accent. The registration number is comprised of “6” and “23” referring to the NBA championships won and Jordan’s number. Oops, almost forgot the logo. This is a Gulfstream IV.

Globe-trotter luggage.

centenary trolley suitcase.

If your favorite part of THE DARJEELING LIMITED was the custom made Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton luggage, then you may just want to return all your Christmas presents and cash in on the Centenary trolley suitcase. Shown above in Hermes orange with brown straps (and also available in red, shown below), the Centenary, like all the luggage from Globe-Trotter, is made entirely by hand with their trademarked Vulcan Fibre, “an incredibly durable material made of compressed layers of paper,” the same since its invention
in 1850.

Even the suitcases themselves are made in England on original Victorian machinery. Who knew a million layers of paper was more durable than leather? If you think that $1,580 is a lot to pay for a suitcase, well you’re right, but consider that other luggage series from Globe-Trotters are so pricey the number is too big to list online – you have to send an official inquiry.

The bust of moliere.

Dec 16, 2010

whether you love molière, want to look like you love molière or just appreciate a nice mustache, this bust of the famous french playwright is the finishing touch your grand library needs.
This isn’t just some trendy take on antique sculpture, this is the real deal. First created in biscuit porcelain (aka white unglazed porcelain) in 1899 at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, this bust is actually classified historic. The Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres was founded by Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (better known as the Marquise de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV of France) in 1740 in Vincennes, moving to the town of Sèvres in 1756. Widely known as a patron of the arts and literature, this unusually powerful, practical, and accomplished eighteenth century woman also planned the building of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, as well as the nation’s respected Ecole Militaire.

Since then, the porcelain foundry has produced a number of magnificent works, but not all of them are available for purchase online. Get your 18″ Molière for $12,500 and show the world you know a legacy of human accomplishment when you see one.

After the Apple’s Magic Mouse mouse, here’s a blow of heart for this design made entirely of titanium and high quality resin, with laser optics.

Good to go on Windows and Mac OS X.

This is a hand-crafted device that is anything but humble (or cheap) or as smart as MM, but lays down challenge on the design front.

The ID mouse is Bluetooth enabled and is constructed from hand-formed grade one titanium and high quality plastic resin. It features a neodymium scroll wheel and is suitable for both left and right-handed users. Powered by two AAA batteries it is available in black or white and has a three-button layout.

Designer, Marcus Wallenberg Meyer, 32, built his award winning prototype in 2006. Now in production, the striking limited edition bikes aren’t cheap. 11,000 – 15,000 euros ( $14,000 – $19,000 USD ), depending on the equipment. There are not many wooden bikes in production. Jano is a concept that we hope gets produced.

The Caparo T1 was in the press back in 2006. But now it is now production ready.

It’s as close as you’ll ever get to a genuine race car for the road. It’s been designed by a bunch of former McLaren Formula One engineers, and concedes only as much to practicality as is strictly necessary to make it street legal…maybe. Unveiled at the London Salon Privé at the prestigious Hurlingham Club, where final details on pricing, availability and a new sales and service network are expected to be announced shortly. ECCI TrackStar 6000

Jan 21, 2009

ecci-1
Speed freak racer controller. The ECCI TrackStar 6000 is simply the best PC steering wheel and pedal set available in the world. If you can afford it, you’ll never regret buying one.

We’re talking a two-tone leather steering wheel, fluid damped steering which emulate the feel of tyres on pavement, fine tuned customizable steering resistance, high precision USB electronics and a shock absorbing desk clamp. Matching pedals also available. That’s enough for us, we’re sold. Now where’s that copy of Colin McRae’s rally from 1992?

Unlike most wheels that are circular in grip section, the 6000 Talladega wheel is deeper than it is wide in frontal profile. This creates a more natural grip shape for the hand. The grip contour at the nine and three o’clock positions is ideally suited to actuate the close fitting shift paddles behind. Lock-to-lock road course racing is a snap, but it is large enough in diameter to offer the incremental control critical to oval
track racing.

ecci-2
An all-new breakthrough design, the 6000 features true automotive ergonomics with a top-pivoting hang down pedal mounting. This is mated with a heel rest offering a stable platform for pedal operation.

Unique to the new 6000, all critical pedal geometric relationships are fully adjustable to uniquely suit each user. These include: pedal angle from vertical; heel rest angle and distance from pedals; pedal height from heel rest; pedal to pedal lateral spacing; and individual pedal resistance rate.

Priced at USD$989 with the tricked-up 6000GT and clutch-pedal packing 6000GTS models at $1198 and $1398 respectively.
