Wright Auction Houses launches their Scandinavian Design Auction—showcasing pieces by Alvar Aalto, Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and Poul Kjaerholm. Known for its elegance and seamless integration of material and form, Nordic furniture was instrumental in launching the modern design movement of the twentieth century, and remains among the most sought-after modern furniture today. The lot includes several of Jacobsen’s Egg and Swan chairs, as well as an Aalto Paimio lounge chair.

Wright says, of the collection: “Designs issuing from Scandinavia in the 20th century shifted the paradigm of modernism towards a fundamentally human ethos which has been, and remains, a standard for function, quality and beauty.”

A highlight of the sale is a collection of Swedish carpets from Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, the studio that commissioned Barbro Nilsson and Marianne Richter. A graphic, yellow wool carpet by Richter will likely carry the auction’s highest price tag; it’s estimated to go for $30,000-40,000. Peruse the lot at your leisure at [ wright ]

wright28mar-natzler1wheel-thrown earthenware | gertrud and otto natzler | c1955 |click > enlarge

Featured in this auction is a special collection of ceramics by Otto and Gertrud Natzler. Using clays indigenous to California, Gertrud threw vessels which Otto clothed with monochromatic  glazes. Janet Kardon, curator of the American Craft Museum, writes of the Natzlers: “For Gertrud, the pot was an extension of her hand; for Otto, the glazes were the result of a controlled and skillful interaction with chemistry and the vagaries of the kiln.” The Natzlers’ remarkable partnership resulted in over 25,000 vessels and 2,500 glaze formulations. Exceptional among the collection is the Nocturne bottle, a slender, poetic form enhanced by a deep blue and violet glaze (estimate: $20,000-30,000). This example was exhibited in 1971 at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.

Scandinavian design auction. Wright.

Nov 1, 2012

rare sofa | finn juhl | baker | 1951 | click > enlarge

Since 1920, designers from Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway have produced forms in natural, tactile materials which rebuff the machine-age industrialism of Bauhaus. A convergence of social transformations, international influences and ancient artistic traditions manifested into new forms which veered away from the classicized, status-driven designs of the past to become a bedrock of modernity.

Crafted of warm woods with a distinct clarity of function and form, Scandinavian design is the most aesthetically consistent and philosophically inclusive design movement of the last century. Its appeal derives primarily from form and material, yet also from the inherent grace, comfort and style of spiritually uninhibited yet formally disciplined design. The Nordic sensibility is seen in the sweeping back and embracing arms of a rare Finn Juhl sofa (estimate: $20,000 – $30,000), upholstered in wool and leather. Its unconventional shape is recognizably Juhl, generous in both spirit and form.

Also of particular importance in the sale is a selection of Swedish carpets by Carl Dagel, Barbro Nilsson and Märta Måås-Fjetterström among others. Scandinavians excel in carpet-making by necessity, since carpets warm homes during the long, frigid Nordic winters. Particularly striking among the group is a hand-woven Salerno Blue tapestry carpet by Swedish designer, Barbro Nilsson (estimate: $30,000 – $40,000).

Modern design. Wright auction.

Oct 15, 2012

cabinet from the hotel parco dei principi rome | bio ponti | 1964 | click > enlarge

Wright’s [ Modern Design ] auction features an incomparable selection of works by the best known designers of the 20th century. Exceptional pieces from modern greats such as Harry Bertoia, Walter Lamb, George Nelson & Associates, Jean Prouvé and Carlo Scarpa figure prominently in the auction, as do a significant number of pieces by Pierre Jeanneret. Jeanneret’s Kangourou lounge chair and two pairs of Senat armchairs are expected to be popular among bidders. Several pieces designed by George Nakashima including important Minguren I and II coffee tables, a set of four Conoid chairs and a Conoid dining table also rank among the highlights of the auction. [ modern design 18 october 2012 noon cst ]

marshmallow sofa | george nelson & associates | 1956

Highly anticipated among the lots is a collection of furniture designed by the architect Frank Gehry from his Easy Edges (1969 – 73) and Experimental Edges (1979 – 82) series. In the tradition of modern masters such as Charles and Ray Eames, Gehry elevates a humble material, cardboard, to build masterworks of design. Gehry is direct and honest in his engagement with the material; unpainted and unvarnished, Gehry takes full advantage of the warmth of the cardboard’s tone and the honeycombed texture to create beautiful, functional forms from an unconventional material. The earlier Easy Edges pieces are distinctively sculptural with sharp, clean profiles. These designs later evolved into the Experimental Edges line, for which Gehry uses multiple layers of cardboard to create pieces of furniture that appear solid and visually dense with soft edges. Designed and manufactured early in his career, these exceptional furniture forms are harbingers of the radical innovation to come from Gehry’s studio.

A selection of Italian glass by Scarpa, Venini, Gambone, Buzzi and Fratelli Toso also join the ranks of remarkable modern decorative objects.

This auction features approximately 250 lots of exceptional modern design. Each item is featured in Wright’s award-winning, full-color catalog as well as presented [ online ] Gallery preview runs from 11 > 17 October, 10a > 5p, Monday > Saturday and Sunday by appointment. click > enlarge

Opening the fall auction season is Wright’s Living Contemporary sale, a thoughtfully edited auction comprised of functional and non-functional 20th and 21st century design paired with post-war and contemporary art. This sale features an outstanding selection of works by American, Argentine, Italian, Danish, French and Japanese designers.

An iconic painting by the American artist, Roger Brown, figures prominently in the auction, as does two Bertoia sculptures: a rare Dandelion and a large Spray sculpture. Exceptional works of art include those by Sam Francis, Louise Nevelson, Franz Hagenauer, Marino Marini, Matt Leines, Luciano Gaspari, Robert Loughlin, Conrad Marca-Relli and Ray Potes. An important painting by Victor Vasarely, a steel sculpture by Australian sculptor Clement Meadmore and a wrought iron and glass vase by Andre Dubreuil are also among the most highly anticipated lots of the sale.

Unparalleled craftsmanship is the hallmark of American pieces featured, such as JB Blunk’s organic-form coffee table carved from solid buckeye burl, an outstanding wall-mounted cabinet of welded and patinated steel by Paul Evans, a monumental hand-carved cabinet by Phillip Lloyd Powell, and a Conoid dining table crafted of American black walnut by George Nakashima. Extending the legacy of modern craftsmanship into the new millennium are contemporary works such as the Modern Primitive Chair by the New York based creators arandalasch, exhibited at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, and three designs by the architect Steven Holl, including a stellar prototype cabinet of walnut, rubber and anodized aluminum. Works by international designers include a cast bronze and mosaic coffee table by Grillo Demo and a Delfi dining table by Carlo Scarpa and Marcel Breuer.
