elke walter connexxion – presents new work and a zaha hadid tribute at coam madrid.

Jul 1, 2018

above > connexxion exhibition images / exhibition open through 30 july 2018

zaha hadid defined a future architecture. a math background evolved into a geometry of planes, shapes, and spirals that wave with a spacial rhythm of time and space. hadid’s design vision extended to both buildings and objects.

zaha achieved a great deal in her lifetime. she was dame hadid. a winner of the stirling prize in architecture in 2010 and 2011. the first woman to win the pritzker architecture prize, in 2004. once described as a “paper” architect, hadid’s plans were once considered unbuildable. she was so ahead of the curve, she had to wait for technology to catch up. hadid’s vision was so strong and defined that her architectural practice continues.

there was one designer who the architect turned to design her clothes, elke walter.

a new exhibit at coam museum in madrid entitled, elke walter connexxion from dresses to sculptures & photography, a tribute to zaha hadid runs from 5-30 july 2018. the show will feature unique garments created during the time that zaha hadid was a client, as well as new directions in walter’s work. as with any visionary, elke walter expands her vision with jewelry, sculptures, and photography.

in a continuum, a young fan of zaha hadid reached out to walter to create the show. designapplause chats with elke walter about their unique relationship with zaha and her new direction.

[DesignApplause] you’re presenting new work at coam as well as a tribute to an old friend and colleague, zaha hadid. how did you meet zaha hadid?

[elke walter] i met zaha for the first time 2006 at luminaire in miami. nargis and nasir kassamali introduced me and my work to her and she immediately liked it. but despite our long relationship, we never became close friends. we respected each other and there was a strong connection between us based on a common taste and the strong will to work in a very singular and different way.

[DA] your style was already developed when you met zaha.
[EW] i’m not influenced by someone or something. it always felt like coming from an inner source, i started with some very rudimentary cuts and then little by little developed my own way of creating garments. i always wanted to do my very own ‘thing’, invent not copy. and when i met zaha, i already did these architectural shapes without having any idea of her’s or other architect’s work.

i am self-taught and created and made my first clothes 1998 when i lived with my husband and our 3 sons in montpellier, france. i’ve found my first clients there and when we moved back to hamburg in 2001, i opened my own store there one year later. in the beginning, i only made one-of-a-kind pieces, mainly in black and white. encouraged by a growing clientele, i started creating collections and showed them on fashion fairs and in showrooms in paris, new york, and milan.

i always preferred staying independent as well in my creativity as in business. i had my own style and felt very much attracted by structured fabrics. in my very personal way of cutting, folding and draping these materials, i created sculptural pieces with sometimes architectural shapes. it was a logical consequence for me to use the same skills for making sculptures and jewelry. almost all my photographs show my work or the material i’m using.

[DA] how did zaha choose pieces in your collection?

[EW] as long as i designed and made her unique pieces i always knew what she’d need and like. she designed extraordinary buildings and i designed extraordinary garments for her. her needs, her great style and her personality influenced my work. in everything i’m creating, in every new challenge i still feel this connection. she was very important to me.

[DA] you had an unusual road into fashion. you are now devoted to sculptures, jewelry, and photography. your fashion feels more like wearable sculpture.

[EW] the structure of the fashion business did not suit me. the repetition felt forced in line with the way l work.

when we moved to france again in 2012 i changed everything and did pop-ups in art and design galleries and architecture offices. several garments in this exhibit were on display at zhd gallery in london when zaha was present.

my sculptural objects are a continuation of my work on garments. i felt the need to create something non-wearable, to study the possibilities of manipulating fabrics, create volume and density. i always start with one small object and then, by making hundreds of them and attach them to each other, the sculpture grows and grows. it’s fascinating and has no limits. for these objects, i love working with pleated polyester fabrics that have a metal optic but feel soft.

[DA] your photos will also be on view.  your photos feature strong and mysterious images. on instagram, you are very minimal and directional with your presentation.

[EW] when i first started taking pictures, it was all about nature and architecture and it was just for fun. i used my samsung note and some apps and posted the result on instagram. @elkewalter

about 2 years ago, i thought it would be useful to have all my work photographed and systematically took pics of all my sculptures. or just parts of it. i always preferred black and white images, and it became a real pleasure to use filters and try new techniques. i only use my smartphone, that’s my personal challenge. i don’t want to think too much about it, just do it, quickly, in my studio, while i’m working. the show will feature photos of the fabrics i am using in my work.

i like to alienate these materials by using filters. often you don’t know if what you see on the image is organic or artificial. photography became a part of my universe, my very personal way of seeing and showing my creations.

[DA] the show at coam is called ‘connexxion’. there are so many invisible threads between your work and zaha including the formation of this show.

[EW] last year, i was contacted by juan antonio fuentes, an architectural student in madrid. juan reached out to me on social media and i enjoyed his work and followed him as well. he ordered a coat and then asked me if i’d ever come to madrid. as i told him that i’ve no contacts there, he proposed to care for this. juan showed my work to one of his teachers, guadalupe cantarrero, and together they had a meeting at coam, the chamber of architects.
coam’s vice dean carlos lahoz valacio knew my work. he agreed immediately to give me the opportunity for a solo exhibition in the context of my years of creating one-of-a-kind garments for zaha hadid.

[ elke walter ] has been creating sculptures as fashion since 1998. her fabrics are produced in a small rural france mill, using old techniques mixed with modern knowhow. there she gets her fabric ideas realized: pleated, twisted and finally dyed delicately on the structured outside. elke has always employed fabric as a medium for her creative expression, one which has been evolving from one-of-a-kind fashion to an increasingly sculptural work.

elke walter’s sculptural work creatively references the late zaha hadid, a person that she not only admired for her creative impetus, but with whom she had a personal relationship. elke walter was zaha hadid’s favorite designer for many years – understandably, as both considered fashion to be architectural. or intergalactic.

[ coam ] the official college of architects of madrid is the public law corporation that represents and defends the interests of architects.

luminaire welcomes cassina back to the family.

luminaire welcomes cassina back to the family.

Sep 22, 2017

united in their guiding principles, luminaire and cassina share a belief that good design has the power to affect people’s lives. the pioneering design forces are joining again as luminaire welcomes cassina back into the family by offering their innovative range of products in the luminaire showrooms and online store. luminaire is pleased to reunite with cassina and looks forward to a future sharing and shaping the concept of good design.

with a collection that includes iconic pieces from the likes of le corbusier and charlotte perriand to new, progressive designs by visionaries including patricia urquiola, konstantin grcic, and ronan & erwan bouroullec, cassina demonstrates a thoughtful appreciation for its history while looking to the future. the prestigious brand was founded in 1927 in meda, italy by brothers cesare and umberto cassina who translated the rich tradition of furniture production and woodworking of the region into an industrialized system for manufacturing that redefined the notion of contemporary italian design. for over 90 years, cassina has remained on the forefront of design thanks to its unwavering commitment to research, experimentation, and design expression.

cassina has distinguished itself by collaborating with a range of outside designers. since the mid ’50s, the company has engaged the talents of architects such as gio ponti, afra and tobia scarpa, mario bellini and vico magistretti for design collaborations. these designers redefined the notion of what it meant to be contemporary with furniture by reinterpreting traditional form, function, and production. cassina has continued this modern union of designer and producer, melding a diverse range of products together with cohesion by imbuing each project with their design philosophy.

with an eye on the future, cassina has introduced new designers into its collection including zaha hadid, philippe starck, and its newly appointed art director, patricia urquiola. urquiola has established refreshing new designs with cassina like the floe insel, a versatile modular sofa inspired by icebergs with pieces working as “floating islands” that can be used together or separately for a combination of options situated in any living space.

luminaire and cassina have shared a long history in the pursuit of propagating good design. this reunion marks a welcome addition to the luminaire catalog that will see the two brands working together to create new ways of living for the future. for clients of luminaire, the addition of cassina provides another facet in creating dynamic environments made for living.

“cassina represents an important legacy of italian design. from their rich history, they continue to look to the future. we are excited for what lies ahead for cassina and their visionary impact on modern design.” said by luminaire ceo nasir kassamali

[ luminaire ] continues its commitment to viscerally connecting the public with contemporary design by hosting muti-disciplinary italian architect and designer antonio citterio for a lecture and exhibition in chicago. on tuesday, june 13th, citterio will present a lecture at the museum of contemporary art chicago which will be followed by an opening reception for the inauguration of a month-long exhibition of the designer’s work at luminaire chicago showroom. aiming to uncover the connective stories between process, product, and design, the exhibition will feature iconic pieces designed by antonio citterio for renowned brands b&b italia, vitra, and flos.

antonio citterio’s design philosophy has always been focused on a method, not a style. the metamorphosis of an idea or an intention, into a project or a product, takes place by means of the alchemy that is the relationship between him as an architect/designer and the client. his all-encompassing design sensibility is reminiscent of the total environments created by arne jacobsen. a proponent of rational design, citterio has produced truly innovative furniture design while paying homage to influences such as eileen gray, charles and ray eames, and george nelson. winner of the compasso d’oro award in 1987 and 1995, his products are part of the moma permanent collection in new york and the centre pompidou in paris.

the month-long exhibition showcases a curated selection of citterio’s iconic designs for an array of manufacturers. included in the installation is the mart lounge chair (b&b italia, 2003), charles sofa (b&b italia, 1997), ac4 task chairs (vitra, 2008), grand repos armchair (vitra, 2011), kelvin led lighting (flos, 2009), a.b.c. lounge chair (flexform, 1996), citterio e bathroom fixtures (axor, 2014), battista trolley (kartell, 1991), and design-focused gym equipment from technogym. throughout the showroom, additional products by citterio will be on display. the exhibition will also display multi-media presentations that share the stories and methods behind the featured products. these visual aids will additionally showcase the designer’s architectural works from around the globe which compliment and enrich the storytelling experience of the exhibition.

luminaire has shared citterio’s unique insights about architecture and design with audiences in both miami and chicago on several occasions throughout the years. in june 2004, luminaire was the first to present citterio’s stunning new lighting collection for flos. he also discussed his architecture and design projects at the opening of luminaire’s superior street location in chicago in november 1992, and luminaire welcomed antonio citterio and terry dwan as guests of honor at “milan in miami,” an evening gala and exhibit that celebrated luminaire’s 21st anniversary in june 1995.

to help luminaire in the quest for fighting cancer, citterio also participated in puppylove 2006, transforming a 3d white plastic puppy designed by eero aarnio in a fuschia-colored, curly-tailed gift of love that was sold at auction to raise funds for the university of miami’s sylvester comprehensive cancer research center. in 2008, citterio celebrated the magical properties of paper with luminaire, creating in-out,’ a simple yet eye-catching single piece of white paper with four neat columns of pyramids spread across the white page and five rows leading down. a simple concept, but intriguing enough to explore for hours. ‘in-out’ was auctioned to raise funds for cancer research during the exhibition paperlove.

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of antonio citterio’s iconic creation for b&b italia, the charles sofa. 20 years on from its debut, charles remains a reference model in the world of design worldwide.

charles | b&b italia | 1997

during neocon week, luminaire will also unveil the newest lighting installation by the creative director of bocci, omer arbel. a cluster of sculptural lighting consisting of 61 pendants of bocci 87 series creating a matrix of stretched and folded glass and trapped air that give the piece a pearlescent optical quality. the bocci 87 was recently debuted at euroluce during milan design week. luminaire believes that design is a language, and as such has the power to transform lives. part of our fundamental value is to spread our passion for design through education, and we are honored to strengthen design awareness through Antonio Citterio’s creative process.

fendi presents the happy room, an inspired interpretation of a modular vip room. with a soft and rarefied tone, distinguished by simple volumes and rounded shapes, the happy room by cristina celestino suggests harmony and delicacy. numerous iconic elements, such as the distinctive arch of palazzo della civiltà italiana in rome, or the inlay of materials; drawing on the stylistic matrix of the fendi fur atelier, which is repeated within the collection through innovative techniques and the contrasting play of various types of marbles.

happy room will be located in the main exhibition tent.

above> patricia findlay presents atelier biagetti’s no sex

no sex in miami is the current episode of atelier biagetti’s exploration of contemporary life and goes deep into the human psyche to address the all-time greatest obsession: the idea of sex. first shown during milan design week 2016 curated by maria cristina didero, this time it is the ultimate environment for psychological confrontation, the therapist’s studio. the space itself contains all the expected elements, but the deceptively familiar surroundings are not innocently functional but rather tease the viewer, thus provoking new kinds of behavior around the perception of what sexy is, and around the idea of contemporary design.

friedman benda returns to design miami with asymmetrical symmetry, two parallel room settings featuring the work of eleven contemporary designers. contrasts, opposites and asymmetries will illustrate the rich diversity and backgrounds of designers spanning four continents and four generations, while calling attention to the breadth and depth of each individual designer’s practice.

one room, a juxtaposition of non-traditional materials in a frenzy of vibrant colors and textures, marks friedman benda’s first collaboration with american artist chris schanck.this setting will feature a monumental contemporary dining table and mirror, and a new series of armchairs in schanck’s signature alufoil technique and will preview his first solo exhibition at friedman benda in september 2017. misha kahn, fresh from a working trip to south africa, will present the first in a new series of cabinets produced in swaziland made with woven grass, trash, car parts, and sea glass. the inclusion of the campana brothers’ bi-level marquetry table along with a pair of pink pirarucu armchairs, complete the room.

the second setting is an exploration of volumes, with furniture and objects in natural materials and earthy tones. british designer faye toogood’s volumetric roly-poly dining chairs in silver nitrate bronze will preview her first solo exhibition with friedman benda, assemblage 5, opening february 23, 2017. these chairs will be paired with korean designer byung hoon choi’s minimalist sculptural dining table in light oak and stone. american design legend, wendell castle, now 84, will show the first in his exciting new block series of carved chairs ‘born’ of wood, referencing classical sculpture of the renaissance period, marcel wanders’ low embroidered leather odjurss äte murmur chairs will be juxtaposed with los angeles based artist adam silverman’s organic ceramic vessels. the setting will include lighting – the unveiling of chilean design studio gt2p’s new remolten lava table lamps made from lava excavated from chile’s villarrica volcano; a voluminous rice paper and bamboo floor lamp by the influential italian architect and designer andrea branzi, as well as british designer paul cocksedge’scapture, a hand-spun aluminum dome chandelier, which holds the glow of a warm white light, but with no visible source.

brooklyn-based calico wallpaper will unify the rooms, a second collaboration with the company’s founders. inspired by the concept of optical illusion, calico wallpaper will present a site-specific print of their aurora wallpaper with a custom pattern designed to play with the viewer’s perception and challenge one’s visual system.
