from 16 to 21 september 2019, bohinc studio opens its doors with the lunar house, a pop-up exhibition to mark the moon landing’s 50th anniversary during this year’s london design festival. space and planets continue to inspire the designs of lara bohinc, who presents aptly named new pieces such as the jupiter vase and the juno box at the lunar house, alongside the freshly launched planetaria collection and a selection from lara’s collaboration with kasthall.
with the lunar house, bohinc studio presents its signature style in a full interior set up for the first time. the brand comes to life through lara’s spatial treatment of a victorian townhouse in the king’s cross design district.
curved undulated walls mix with period and futuristic aesthetics. the walls and floor are dark petrol blue, like the cosmos itself, and the objects and furniture dot the space like stars in the sky. the pieces in cream, tomato red, and sky blue colors, highlighted by brass frames, complement and contrast the dark space. ‘color has always been an important part of my design aesthetic, adds lara bohinc. i love to use it to highlight contrasts and create bold statements’.

to coincide with the london design festival, elephant west, the innovative new art space in west london, will be hosting a series of adventurous and immersive installations, exploring the idea of home and what it means in today’s world and in our increasingly digital future.
as current ideas of who we are, what we should be doing and how we should live are all under question, our idea of “home” has changed significantly at both an individual and collective level and yet home, or the idea of home, remains the place we turn to for both healing and restoration.
from a dining room of the future that brings people together from different realities, times and places, to a bedroom that shields us from the ever pervading digital world, to a halotherapy room that exudes wellbeing in the form of a rococo salt cave, to a microflora pharmaroom that acts as a responsive space to regenerate our cells, elephant west will take the visitor on a multi-sensory journey of healing spaces of the future, that is both playful and engaging.
curated by becca pelly-fry, welcome home will feature immersive installations by artists from the uk, mexico, usa, denmark, ireland and new zealand.

after the recent collaboration for the fuorisalone 2019, alpi and the designer martino gamper go back to work together for the london design festival, one of the main international events in the design world.
the company, leader in the production of decorative surfaces in reconstituted wood veneer, contributes to the realization of the exclusive site-specific installation disco carbonara designed by gamper, on display from 14 to 22 september 2019 at king’s cross. the new london creative district will be, for the first time this year, a design district of the festival, becoming part of the most interesting addresses in london for design and architecture.
disco carbonara is conceived by gamper as a playful temporary gateway to the new coal drops yard commercial center. for this project, the designer has expressly chosen reclaimed alpi wood to cover the entire structure – 10 m long and about 8 m high – composed of a fake colored façade that evokes in an entirely new way the lively atmospheres of the discos.
by selecting waste elements that can no longer be used in production, gamper perfectly reveals his modus operandi of deconstruction and re-contextualization of the existing, with the aim of restoring new life and value to a “forgotten” material and exploring its extraordinary potential. the combinations of chromatic tones and variegated textures give shape to a highly scenographic geometric composition that reveals the unusual expressive language of the designer and his imaginative poetics.

designer dan tobin smith and creative studio the experience machine, in partnership with gemfields, present void; a multi-sensory spatial installation at collins music hall, islington.
visitors will become part of an immersive experience, traveling through a series of large-scale projections that showcase the expanded space inside gemstones and map the blurring boundaries between nature and design.
a selection of mozambican rubies and zambian emeralds from gemfields’ mines, which date back millions of years, are brought to life through photography of tiny microcosms magnified to become abstract, galaxy-like structures accompanied by other semi-precious gems created in rare geological processes, these unique mineral formations are discovered, suspended and frozen in time.
the installation considers the concept of containment and scale, employing spatial design to explore the natural borders formed within these unique mineral formations.
by translating moving image into a contained physical form and scoring the experience with harmonized layers of the human voice – by female electronic drone choir nyx – visitors are invited to enter within the portrait of a gemstone’s natural inclusion.

considerate design: in response to the brompton’s nature/nurture theme for 2019, contemporary design and craft gallery mintdisplays the work of 60 designers – both new talents and established names – all chosen for their dedication to respecting nature and minimizing human impact on the environment. from lighting made from found wood to sculptural examinations of typography, the works are all exemplars of sustainability-focused, circular design. in ‘coal: post-fuel’, for example, jesper eriksson seeks to recontextualize a functional fossil fuel, finding a new purpose and value for the notorious pollutant as a beautiful design material, as precious as marble.

canadian designer matthew mccormick is proud to present avalanche, a temporary installation at the victoria & albert museum for the 2019 london design festival. a highly experiential exhibit, the installation seeks to fuel thoughtful introspection on the effects of climate change through the artist’s interpretation of what it feels when trapped inside a torrential snow slide – a tangible result of our planet’s fluctuating weather conditions.
a nod to the chaos and power driven by mother nature on our environment, mccormick marries light with material within an imposing, seamlessly executed box at the v&a conspicuously located on the landing of the british gallery. the exterior exhibit highlights mccormick’s contemporary design ethos in the classically historic space, making it impossible to ignore. from within, it is a hybrid between an interactive reflection chamber and an artistic metaphor representing a skewed sense of scale and reality. more specifically, it is a designer’s interpretation of a suspended moment in time where visitors are caught in an avalanche and faced with a mindful revelation of their own mortality.
