draga & aurel present transparency matters. milan design week 2019.

Apr 9, 2019

como-based atelier draga & aurel returns to salone del mobile this april with transparency matters, an immersive installation featuring the duo’s latest collection of art, furniture and lightings.

draga obradovic notes: “the title of the exhibition has a double meaning. transparency matters: for us, it is the most important attitude. it refers to the transparent materials used in the collection — cast resin, glass and plexy — as well as our evolutions as designers. from transparency, we think of transformation, transition, transgression, transnational: all words that describe us and our more than ten years of working together.”

the exhibition will take place in the heart of milan’s brera design district from tuesday 9 to sunday 14 april.

designer’s inspiration

alphabet of light is a new font that translates into light, a luminous language used to write an express one’s thoughts.

it can be used to design light in a space with words as well as graphic signs using simple base modules with specific geometric proportions that can be combined to create countless linear or curved structures of light.

the linear and round modules can be combined to form a system of letters, numbers and symbols as well as free or closed compositions.

alphabet of light linear or circular can be arranged in countless basic or more complex structures to produce suspension appliances that can match with architecture or space functions.

alphabet of light uses innovative technological and manufacturing principals to produce a continuous and comfortable light.

alphabet of light wall version is available now.
alphabet of light suspension is coming in winter 2017.

antonio citterio at luminaire chicago during neocon 2017.

May 29, 2017

lecture > tuesday, 13 june 6pm | museum of contemporary art chicago | 220 east chicago avenue [ RSVP ] /////
exhibition opening reception > tuesday, 13 june 7pm | luminaire chicago | 301 west superior street

[ luminaire ] continues its commitment to viscerally connecting the public with contemporary design by hosting muti-disciplinary italian architect and designer antonio citterio for a lecture and exhibition in chicago. on tuesday, june 13th, citterio will present a lecture at the museum of contemporary art chicago which will be followed by an opening reception for the inauguration of a month-long exhibition of the designer’s work at luminaire chicago showroom. aiming to uncover the connective stories between process, product, and design, the exhibition will feature iconic pieces designed by antonio citterio for renowned brands b&b italia, vitra, and flos.

antonio citterio’s design philosophy has always been focused on a method, not a style. the metamorphosis of an idea or an intention, into a project or a product, takes place by means of the alchemy that is the relationship between him as an architect/designer and the client. his all-encompassing design sensibility is reminiscent of the total environments created by arne jacobsen. a proponent of rational design, citterio has produced truly innovative furniture design while paying homage to influences such as eileen gray, charles and ray eames, and george nelson. winner of the compasso d’oro award in 1987 and 1995, his products are part of the moma permanent collection in new york and the centre pompidou in paris.

the month-long exhibition showcases a curated selection of citterio’s iconic designs for an array of manufacturers. included in the installation is the mart lounge chair (b&b italia, 2003), charles sofa (b&b italia, 1997), ac4 task chairs (vitra, 2008), grand repos armchair (vitra, 2011), kelvin led lighting (flos, 2009), a.b.c. lounge chair (flexform, 1996), citterio e bathroom fixtures (axor, 2014), battista trolley (kartell, 1991), and design-focused gym equipment from technogym. throughout the showroom, additional products by citterio will be on display. the exhibition will also display multi-media presentations that share the stories and methods behind the featured products. these visual aids will additionally showcase the designer’s architectural works from around the globe which compliment and enrich the storytelling experience of the exhibition.

luminaire has shared citterio’s unique insights about architecture and design with audiences in both miami and chicago on several occasions throughout the years. in june 2004, luminaire was the first to present citterio’s stunning new lighting collection for flos. he also discussed his architecture and design projects at the opening of luminaire’s superior street location in chicago in november 1992, and luminaire welcomed antonio citterio and terry dwan as guests of honor at “milan in miami,” an evening gala and exhibit that celebrated luminaire’s 21st anniversary in june 1995.

to help luminaire in the quest for fighting cancer, citterio also participated in puppylove 2006, transforming a 3d white plastic puppy designed by eero aarnio in a fuschia-colored, curly-tailed gift of love that was sold at auction to raise funds for the university of miami’s sylvester comprehensive cancer research center. in 2008, citterio celebrated the magical properties of paper with luminaire, creating in-out,’ a simple yet eye-catching single piece of white paper with four neat columns of pyramids spread across the white page and five rows leading down. a simple concept, but intriguing enough to explore for hours. ‘in-out’ was auctioned to raise funds for cancer research during the exhibition paperlove.

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of antonio citterio’s iconic creation for b&b italia, the charles sofa. 20 years on from its debut, charles remains a reference model in the world of design worldwide.

charles | b&b italia | 1997

during neocon week, luminaire will also unveil the newest lighting installation by the creative director of bocci, omer arbel. a cluster of sculptural lighting consisting of 61 pendants of bocci 87 series creating a matrix of stretched and folded glass and trapped air that give the piece a pearlescent optical quality. the bocci 87 was recently debuted at euroluce during milan design week. luminaire believes that design is a language, and as such has the power to transform lives. part of our fundamental value is to spread our passion for design through education, and we are honored to strengthen design awareness through Antonio Citterio’s creative process.

norway in milan. milan design week 2016.

Apr 20, 2016

structure, the second exhibition of contemporary norwegian craft and design at milan design week, put the scandinavian country on the map.

showcasing the work of 26 designers or design studios from norway, structure was a collaboration between four norwegian organizations: design collective klubben, contemporary craft resource norwegian crafts, the norwegian centre for design and architecture, and norwegian paint company jotun, who provided a colorful backdrop from which the work could shine. the show, in milan’s ventura lambrate, was curated by renowned interior stylists jannicke kråkvik and alessandro d’orazio and editor in chief of swedish design magazine resident, hanna nova beatrice. “structure aims to bring together the best of contemporary norwegian creativity,” says a statement from the team, “…and foster ground-breaking collaborations and manufacturing partnerships, in a single state-of-the-nation exhibition that exists at the intersection of design, craft and art.”

above> twice ‘norwegian designer of the year,’ and one of norway’s most experienced designers, andreas engesvik, created vigeland for the exhibition as a personal response to oslo’s sculpture garden by the same name. the vase is made from patinated bronze using a method called ‘lost wax casting’ in which the piece is first made from wax, a mould is formed around it, and then the wax is melted away and replaced by molten metal that forms the final piece.

tumble by new designer falke svatun is a spherical stoneware vessel with a cut-out section in the base which allows it to sit over the edge of a shelf or cabinet, challenging perceptions of the solid form.

Norwegian_Structure_04

also challenging perceptions were noidoi, a design team established in oslo in 2013 by kathrine lønstad and cosmin cioroiu, who created meld. the pendant light is made from cast stoneware, and designed to present a familiar material in an unexpected context. the lights can be hung alone or in pairs or groups and cast a focused beam of light, making them ideal for hanging above dining tables or work surfaces.

Norwegian_Structure_05

above> sara wright polmar’s between is neither a sofa nor an armchair, but something in between. “between facilitates different ways to sit alone or in the company of others,” she says. this piece is a prototype and in manufacture users will be able to choose fabric combinations to create different looks.

Norwegian_Structure_08

above> having launched an innovative range of textiles at the london design festival in september, the multi-talented design duo günzler.polmar (sara polmar and victoria günzler) has now turned to ceramics. pour is inspired by ancient and archetypal water pitchers and basins. the cast porcelain pitcher, glazed on the inside only, creates a contrast with the rough stoneware basin.

Norwegian_Structure_10

yet more beautiful ceramics, this time from ann kristin einarsen: stilleben is a collection of ceramic bowls and pots, again glazed only on the inside, which has been designed to be as simple as possible. the minimalist forms and understated colour palette enable them to stand alone or be used in combination with each other.

Norwegian_Structure_11

kristine bjaadal’s sfera is a spherical container made from larvikite or ‘blue pearl granite,’ a material only found in norway and canada, and turned ash. “i find the human inclination to collect memories and keepsakes fascinating, and throughout the last few years i have often returned to work with different kinds of containers,” says kristine. “a container keeps something. it could be something as trivial as beans, coins or cotton pads – a purely practical function; or maybe the container is used to keep objects you love, and in this way keeping your memories.”

Norwegian_Structure_06

above> oslo-based interdisciplinary artist and designer anette korgstad created her steinlav collection to resemble the lichen common to rocks and trees in the norwegian countryside. the hand-thrown stoneware platters are glazed three times to create the desired effect.

Norwegian_Structure_07

above> product and furniture designer sverre uhnger conceived trace, a collection of wooden trays and platters, in order to imbue digitally manufactured objects with a ‘trace’ of their making process. whereas hand-made objects often carry the marks of their maker, the grooves left by cnc (computer numerically controlled) machinery are usually removed.

Norwegian_Structure_12

and finally, christina peel’s untitled project: christina meticulously folds wet porcelain squares, like origami paper, and then tessellates them together to create art pieces that play with idea of repetition, shadows and fragility.
