humanscale will reveal a sneak preview of a new collaboration with chadwick. the forthcoming stool, alto is a new ergonomic stool that demonstrates humanscale’s core values of encouraging movement while allowing the brand to reach a new market within office and residential spaces. available in 2020, alto’s unique stance will allow the user experience stability while its contoured, flexible shell enables comfort by alleviating stress on the back of the thighs. humanscale will also showcase a luxe new executive chair, summa. with its luxurious simplicity, summa presents a refined aesthetic from every angle. its intuitive auto-recline offers seamless support and comfort for today’s dynamic leaders. the design responds to the growing need for versatile executive seating while expanding the brand’s presence within the c-suite landscape.
presented and sponsored by contract magazine, this new pavilion will feature designers of better commercial spaces, showcasing the latest in lighting, furniture, wall coverings, seating, and materials.
this new show-floor space will include exhibitors such as arper, which further expands on its “soft contract” sensibility with an interactive lounge space; humanscale, which is celebrating 20 years of its freedom chair; kartell, which is releasing a range of new products, including traditional pieces updated with modern materials; loftwall, which is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its launch; poppin, which invites visitors to relax and recharge their tech, showcasing its latest furniture and culture solutions; and scandinavian spaces, which highlights new products launched by its partner brands, including materia, nordgröna, and blå station.
humanscale, the leader in ergonomic solutions that improve the health and comfort of work life, returns to milan design week 2019 with an immersive installation, bodies in motion. in a bold expression of sustainability, humanscale presents a minimally built, interactive experience that explores the essence of human movement. bodies in motion is a visual metaphor of humanscale’s commitment to human factors and designing for movement. the installation highlights their pioneering use of natural ergonomics, which draws upon the laws of physics and motion to design products that automatically adapt to the user’s position.
humanscale invited long-time design collaborator, todd bracher to create a multi-sensory experience at salone del mobile. with interest in exploring new modes of expressing human movement, bracher tapped studio thegreeneyl, a design and research practice with a focus on digital design. the installation reinterprets the original scientific method of motion perception developed by swedish psychophysicist, gunnar johansson in 1973, which involved placing lights on key points of the human body to highlight movement.
“when considering the experience, we looked to strip away cosmetic distractions and reveal human movement in its purest form. we wanted to extend this essential understanding of motion to fill the tunnel at ventura centrale in an experience that engages all visitors in the space,” says designer todd bracher.
bodies in motion will be displayed during milan design week in the historical vaulted warehouses beneath the milano central station as part of the third edition of ventura centrale.
reckonstruct, the us pavilion for the xxii international exhibition, will be unveiled at the triennale di milano. the pavilion emerged as a labor of love between committed partners including arup, humanscale, mit’s shine program, nextwave plastics, stickbulb and novità and demonstrates new possibilities in materials, design and manufacturing that allow us to leave the world better than we found it. we’re overwhelmed by the incredible ingenuity and dedication demonstrated by everyone in this collective to bring the exhibition to life.
laufen collaborates with studio eoos that created the austrian contribution to the xxii international exhibition of la triennale di milano with an ecological project – based on all of the technological know-how of the swiss ceramic specialist – broken nature: design takes on human survival, a group exhibition curated by moma senior curator paola antonelli that explores the power of design to deter climate change. the show includes a multimedia installation by arup and massachusetts institute of technology on the life cycle of materials.
the thematic exhibition consists of four works specially commissioned to international designers. the commissioned works have been entrusted to formafantasma (andrea trimarchi and simone farresin), to neri oxman and to his research group mediated matter group of mit media lab, to sigil collective (khaled malas, salim al-kadi, alfred tarazi and jana traboulsi), a collective based in beirut and new york, and accurat, research and innovation company in the field of data-driven design, with offices in milan and new york (project led by giorgia lupi and gabriele rossi).
the great animal orchestra will also be presented as part of the ‘broken nature’ exhibition. created by american musician and bioacoustician bernie krause and the english collective united visual artists (uva), the collaboration provides an immersive installation that presents a meditative interpretation on the necessity of preserving the beauty of the animal world. a number of directly commissioned works will also complement the thematic installation by highlighting design approaches aimed not only at correcting humanity’s self-destructive course, but also at replenishing our relationship with the environment and with all species – including other human beings.
in addition, mycosystem, the polish pavilion at the triennale. mycosystem showcases trees, fungi and humans in an interconnected system that opens new horizons for design. organized by the adam mickiewicz institute and developed by creative directors agata szydłowska, professor of design at the academy of fine arts in warsaw, visual artist małgorzata gurowska, and architect and designer maciej siuda, the exhibit offers a reflection on a new paradigm of sustainability and design.
pioneering ergonomics company honors the legacy of designer niels diffrient & the first ever self-adjusting chair with activations around the world and throughout the year.
this year marks the twentieth anniversary of niels diffrient’s freedom chair. launched by humanscale, the freedom chair revolutionized the seating industry as the first ever self-adjusting chair. it is revered for its elegant simplicity, functionality and timeless design. to mark the occasion, humanscale is launching a year long initiative that will include various events and activations around the world.
“niels shared our belief that form flows from function, and therefore, created something that is honest, timeless and as relevant in new york as it is in helsinki and singapore,” says humanscale ceo and founder robert king.
introduced in 1999, the freedom was the first chair to remove the traditional manual knobs and levers and replace them with the sitter’s body weight and the laws of physics. this resulting self-adjusting mechanism allows users to move freely from posture to posture without thinking about it. diffrient effectively reinvented the modern task chair and changed the way people sit.
shortly after its launch, the freedom was praised by the new york times for ‘setting the gold standard’ in seating. today sales total over 2 million pieces. freedom has also won 10 international awards and been featured in close to 50 tv shows and films.
“perhaps more interesting is that the self-adjusting mechanism is increasingly relevant in today’s work environment. in fact, now, twenty years later, the large furniture companies have finally launched self-adjusting chairs claiming it’s the future of seating. that’s just another testament to niels’ foresight,” adds king.

moquette is a textile mash-up that blends a classic velvet weaving technique with the creative possibilities offered by digital printing technology. the woven structure employs a “moquette” construction produced on a modern wire loom, allowing some areas to be woven as flat bands while elsewhere selected yarns are lifted and then cut to create a short, dense pile. beginning with a simple pattern of alternating horizontal stripes of varying widths, the moquette technique adds complexity by introducing a sense of dimensionality, which is enhanced by the luxurious combination of lustrous and matte yarns. finally, the raised, plush surfaces of the woven fabric are printed digitally with a non-repeating and random color pattern.

Thanks to the exceptionally harmonious blend of wooden seat shell with softly rounded edges with partial upholstery on a light-looking frame, the bench is elegant and leisurely in appearance. It can serve as simple, single sofa or large-scale organizing principle in an open space. With a range of cushion options with diverse materials and fillings, it can serve a range of environments from residential to restaurant, lounge to office with equal ease.

[ avant ] Designer Mark Hirons Avant’s concept of openness include the Lounge Chair, a simple, tailored Sofa and ultimately, to the inviting expanse of a 145-degree Sofa angled to support face-to-face conversation. Avant seating is available fully upholstered or with wood veneer back that accentuates its crisp profile and sculptural presence.
[ lakendo ] LaKendo, designed by Angelo Pinaffo, is a family of chairs available with tip-up or fixed seat. Its multifunctional uses enable several easy configurations: with polypropylene, padded and upholstered seat and back or back in mesh. The metal frame has a peculiar section’s profile which makes the seat more resistant and supports others specific features such as a set for arms, tip-up seat, wheels and supports sled and bench versions. [ ballo ] Created by Don Chadwick, designer of the Aeron Chair, Ballo is a multipurpose stool that encourages users to engage in short-term, active sitting. The identical air-filled domes serve as the base and seat and pressure can be varied just like a Swiss exercise ball. Ballo helps to reduce the risks associated with sedentary behavior and improve metabolism, calorie burn and core strength. There’s also an adjustable height option.

[ lo and syz ] the syz table is one continuous table structure with a seamless flow between the cast legs and aluminum extrusions It comes in heights of 29 and 26 inches as well as a very cool and casual 15 inches. Lo is a charming seat cushion. Research has shown that sitting with the hips above the knees restores gravitational equilibrium and provides longer comfort.

[ berlage ] The Berlage Chair was originally designed in 2004 by Richard Hutten tributing H.P. Berlage, the architect who designed the Municipal Museum of Modern Art in The Hague for the museum’s restaurant. KI reintroduces Berlage in 2014 via their Blu Sky Collection, an initiative of finding intuitive products with unique stories. The strung seat, which is done by hand means each chair by all accounts is unique.

[ bounce by knoll ] In an effort to reduce a level of uncertainty with planning an office space Knoll debuted software developed in partnership with Estimote, a tech start-up building a digital platform to bring content and context to people’s current location. Bounce by Knoll monitors, measures and analyzes space utilization and the work patterns of the office, and offers a digital user engagement platform. Using the Estimote iBeacon platform, Knoll planted seven iBeacons in their showroom that would give attendees a chance to look at occupancy levels at different stations.

[ antenna round big table ] Masamichi Udagawa and Sigi Moeslinger of Antenna create a clever adaptation of their adjustable height Telescope Desk platform. We’d also like to see a Ballo-like chair pair up with it.
[ grip ] GRIP is a universal table suitable for all purposes. A new design inspired by tightrope walkers, the top balances on a narrow beam supported by cast aluminum legs. Grip™ gets more stable the more weighted it becomes. Bases are die cast aluminum and are available in one size. Finish offered in glass bead blasted (textured) and a selection of powder coat finishes in black, white, red and silver. A variety of top shapes and sizes are offered in all standard Nienkämper veneers and plastic laminates, as well as black linoleum.

[ millions of colors ] Earlier in the year for Wolf-Gordon, Danish textile designer and artist Grethe Sørensen introduced a ground-breaking technique of translating pixels to threads. Cooper-Hewitt plans to acquire her work once its new building opens in late 2014.
