design research conference 2010.
Design research is now recognized as the leading way to understand people. Now stripped of its niche status, the field of design research faces new challenges: professional integrity, technology, communication, integration, and new markets. How can it protect its professional integrity as it expands?
May 11—12, 2010, Chicago USA
Milan 2010: at Salone Internazionale del Mobile this week Dutch designer Marcel Wanders presented a chair made by a blow molding technique used to manufacture water bottles.
The Sparkling Chair is made out of PET plastic and produced using the same blow molding technique commonly used for water bottles. After the molding process, the hollow spaces are filled with high pressure air to strengthen the design. With this technique the plastic usage is minimal and the total weight of the chair is only around 1kg. The legs are screwed onto the shell.
Specifications:
Product name: sparkling chair
Color: transparent green
Material: PET plastic
Width: 42.3 cm
Height: 77.6 cm
Depth: 49.0 cm

coming up april 11 – 17 is national architecture week.
National Architecture Week was created to encourage a public dialogue about architecture and to increase attention to the role architects play as a force for positive change in communities.
Engaging both the architecture profession and the public, National Architecture Week will take place virtually on the American Institute of Architects Architecture Week 2010 Facebook fan page.
Each day during architecture week a different discussion topic will be posted to the fan page. Discussion topics will include sustainability/environment, design, economy, education, housing, transportation and health care—all designed to illustrate how design shapes everyone’s lives.
These discussions will be supplemented with the AIANational’s first ever chat on Twitter.
April 11, 2010
National Architecture Week will kick off with the release of a video presentation by the 2010 AIA president, George Miller, FAIA, which will be posted to the Architecture Week 2010 Facebook fan page.
April 12, 2010
The AIA Facebook page will host a discussion on the reach of design and delve into a design-related question that is generated by a panel of topical experts.
April 13, 2010
New videos will be posted to the Shape of America site. The new video posting will generate a discussion on the AIA Facebook page. Video’s will include a profile of past AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Green building award recipients.
April 14, 2010
Given the large number of followers AIA National has on Twitter there will be a 60-minute Twitter chat focusing on the theme, Design Matters, featuring about four to six thought-provoking questions. A web page will be posted and linked to alerting participants how to follow and participate in the chat. More information can be found here.
April 15, 2010
Another new video will be posted to the Shape of America site while a link to the video will be posted on the Facebook page. Architecture Week participants will be encouraged to view the new video and then share their thoughts and commentary about the video on the Facebook page.
April 16, 2010
Another thought-provoking narrative/question from a panel of topical experts will be posted to the Facebook page to engage participants. Pertinent links will be shared as background for the participants.
April 17, 2010
The weeklong initiative ends with a virtual town meeting to discuss the future of communities and how design affects local communities. The model for the town meeting will be based on the town meeting taking place in April in Columbus, Ind., where George Miller, FAIA, will appear. The town meeting will serve to underscore the week’s discussions and encourage users to continue the dialogue throughout the year.

philippe starck, creator of high-tech lamps, modern-style furniture, and chic hotels, has revealed two highly-anticipated wind turbine designs for home use. “Revolutionair,” the sleek turbines were officially debuted after a lengthy 2 years of research and work.
images from presentation
The “Revolutionair” turbine is “revolutionary” because they’re designed for homeowners. That means wind turbines in yards, gardens, or on roofs to generate power for their households. The clear quadrangular 400W WT model has a power output of 400W and the helicoidal 1KW WT one will be able to generate 1 KW of power.
The designer turbines will be produced by Italy’s Pramac and will sell for around $3,800 USD (quadrangular) and $6,000 USD (helicoidal).
“We have to help people to produce energy, to be part of the fight,” Starck said at the unveiling in Milan. “Energy should not be a punishment, we should create a desire (among people to produce it).”

The design world’s oscars”
icon magazine
the jury: british artist antony gormley will chair the jury which includes designer tom dixon, justin mcguirk, editor of icon magazine, graphic designer morag myerscough, style editor of grazia magazine paula reed and david rowan, editor of UK wired magazine, and writer and broadcaster janet street-porter.
the jury’s judging criteria: to select ‘work that reflects issues raised by one or more of the concerns of the current debate on design; to consider the responsiveness of the design to the social, cultural and economic landscape as well as environmental issues; and to assess the degree to which the project has fulfilled the expectations of users and clients’.
2010 best of show:
british student, min-kyu choi from london, has won the brit insurance design of the year 2010, for his elegant reinterpretation of the humble electrical plug, beating over 90 international nominees in the process. jury chair, antony gormley, presented him with the award at a gala dinner held at the design museum.
antony gormley comments ‘thought-through, responsive and modest, the folding plug shows how intelligent, elegant and inventive design can make a difference to everyone’s life.’
min-kyu choi’s inspiration came from having to carry around the world’s largest plug (uk pin plug) with the macbook air, the world’s thinnest laptop. In creating a plug which could fold flat for easy transportation, choi received much praise on showcasing the plug at the royal college of art’s graduate show in 2009, with a brilliant and seemingly obvious improvement to a product that had changed little since its inception in 1946.
deyan sudjic, director of the design museum comments ‘it’s great to see such a practical but elegant demonstration of what design can do to make everyday life so much better. min-kyu choi is a designer just setting out on his career and he clearly has a great future ahead of him.’
the folding plug and all of this year’s shortlisted designs are on show at the design museum, due to the overwhelming demand the exhibition has been extended and will now run through to 31 october.
