design miami/ 2016 will continue its dedication to offering an extensive program of special events, satellite projects, collaborations and commissions to complement the gallery exhibitions this year.

returning this year and continuing to explore the relationship between fashion and design are fendi and louis vuitton. fendi brings a decidedly conceptual, mobile interpretation of a vip room, the happy room, which references the italian brand’s heritage and workmanship. louis vuitton adds to its objets nomades collection with two striking new furniture pieces. airbnb will present sobremesa, a shared space inspired by the mexican tradition of lingering around a table after a meal, working with emerging mexico city-based design studio, pedro&juana. long-time collaborator audi presents the extra hour, by lego, inspired by the audi rs 7 piloted driving concept and focusing on the new kind of freedom and control over time and for the fifth year, maison perrier-jouët returns, this time working with andrew kudless and focusing on the notion of digital craftsmanship. compac, spain-based surface manufacturer collaborates with israeli designer arik levy on an installation inspired by frozen lakes, referencing features of quartz and marble.

above> the 2016 design miami/ pavilion by new york-based shop architects is flotsam & jetsam, a lattice-like pavilion made from biodegradable bamboo filament. the concept ties together two qualities, one visually obvious beach, the other, miami seen as a center for creative thinking and technological. the installation is currently the world’s largest 3d object. a collaboration with fabrication firm branch technology and oak ridge national laboratory who, also using a biodegradable bamboo medium to create the 3d rendered seating.

design miami/ collaborates with institutions, partners and sponsors to present newly commissioned works of design at each fair. these collaborations take the shape of immersive installations, curated exhibitions and unique objects that celebrate design innovation and express keen enthusiasm for design patronage.

above> audi presents the extra hour by lego / inspired by the audi rs 7 piloted driving concept and focusing on the new kind of freedom and control over time that has come along with it. audi has commissioned installations by international designers and architects including bjarke ingels, reed kram, clemens weisshaar and konstantin grcic, thus underlining the brand’s commitment to fostering design culture. each of audi’s installations has highlighted key elements of audi’s technological advancements and married automotive design with the most current developments in different fields of design, urban planning and architecture.

above> dean & deluca, the legendary new york gourmet market and leading international purveyor of fine food, is partnering with one of the world’s most innovative architects, ole scheeren, to create a prototype of his design for a unique food retail concept titled stage. stage presents a glowing, pristine object in polished stainless steel with the undulating topography of a bespoke, high tech display system, created for the powerful celebration of the preparation and presentation of food.

stage will be located in the main exhibition tent of the design fair and will operate throughout the duration of the fair as its main and sole food partner.

above> airbnb presents sobremesa, a lively exploration of shared space, by pedro&juana, an emerging mexico city-based design studio founded by ana paula ruiz galindo and mecky reuss. sobremesa is the mexican tradition of sharing time and space lingering around the table after a meal in casual conversation; pedro&juana recreate the experience of sobremesa in a unique environment inspired by iconic mexican courtyard spaces. walking into the installation, visitors will feel transported to a space that is authentically connected to the designers’ home city through plants, interior design and local everyday objects. the sobremesa installation will change and evolve throughout the week to represent how shared spaces—like airbnb homes—become rich in experience, spirit, and memory as more and more people live and participate in them over time. the exhibition also features a program of meals, cocktails, music, and experiences at designated times throughout the week, activated by an array of diverse hosts selected by the designers.

fendi presents the happy room, an inspired interpretation of a modular vip room. with a soft and rarefied tone, distinguished by simple volumes and rounded shapes, the happy room by cristina celestino suggests harmony and delicacy. numerous iconic elements, such as the distinctive arch of palazzo della civiltà italiana in rome, or the inlay of materials; drawing on the stylistic matrix of the fendi fur atelier, which is repeated within the collection through innovative techniques and the contrasting play of various types of marbles.

this year part of curio, a design miami’s new exhibition platform, which invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. each curio reveals a total environment of objects, textures, artifacts and ideas that challenges and contextualizes familiar design narratives.

no sex in miami is the current episode of atelier biagetti’s exploration of contemporary life and goes deep into the human psyche to address the all-time greatest obsession: the idea of sex. first shown during milan design week 2016 curated by maria cristina didero, this time it is the ultimate environment for psychological confrontation, the therapist’s studio. the space itself contains all the expected elements, but the deceptively familiar surroundings are not innocently functional but rather tease the viewer, thus provoking new kinds of behavior around the perception of what sexy is, and around the idea of contemporary design.

friedman benda returns to design miami with asymmetrical symmetry, two parallel room settings featuring the work of eleven contemporary designers. contrasts, opposites and asymmetries will illustrate the rich diversity and backgrounds of designers spanning four continents and four generations, while calling attention to the breadth and depth of each individual designer’s practice.

one room, a juxtaposition of non-traditional materials in a frenzy of vibrant colors and textures, marks friedman benda’s first collaboration with american artist chris schanck.this setting will feature a monumental contemporary dining table and mirror, and a new series of armchairs in schanck’s signature alufoil technique and will preview his first solo exhibition at friedman benda in september 2017. misha kahn, fresh from a working trip to south africa, will present the first in a new series of cabinets produced in swaziland made with woven grass, trash, car parts, and sea glass. the inclusion of the campana brothers’ bi-level marquetry table along with a pair of pink pirarucu armchairs, complete the room.

the second setting is an exploration of volumes, with furniture and objects in natural materials and earthy tones. british designer faye toogood’s volumetric roly-poly dining chairs in silver nitrate bronze will preview her first solo exhibition with friedman benda, assemblage 5, opening february 23, 2017. these chairs will be paired with korean designer byung hoon choi’s minimalist sculptural dining table in light oak and stone. american design legend, wendell castle, now 84, will show the first in his exciting new block series of carved chairs ‘born’ of wood, referencing classical sculpture of the renaissance period, marcel wanders’ low embroidered leather odjurss äte murmur chairs will be juxtaposed with los angeles based artist adam silverman’s organic ceramic vessels. the setting will include lighting – the unveiling of chilean design studio gt2p’s new remolten lava table lamps made from lava excavated from chile’s villarrica volcano; a voluminous rice paper and bamboo floor lamp by the influential italian architect and designer andrea branzi, as well as british designer paul cocksedge’scapture, a hand-spun aluminum dome chandelier, which holds the glow of a warm white light, but with no visible source.

brooklyn-based calico wallpaper will unify the rooms, a second collaboration with the company’s founders. inspired by the concept of optical illusion, calico wallpaper will present a site-specific print of their aurora wallpaper with a custom pattern designed to play with the viewer’s perception and challenge one’s visual system.

objets nomades is a collection of furniture that reinvents louis vuitton’s art of travel. the installation will be composed of its most emblematic creations, some of which were especially made for design miami/: the stool by atelier oi, the cocoon by the campana brothers, the bell lamp by barber & osgerby, the concertina table , chair and light shade by raw edges, the swing chair by patricia urquiola and the lounge chair by marcel wanders. louis vuitton also unveils the blossom stool, designed by tokujin yoshioka, and the fur cocoon by the campana brothers. sharing a sense of intuitiveness, desire and pleasure, the objets nomades aims to continue louis vuitton’s tradition of offering inspiring and surprising designs to clients all over the world.

the blossom stool and fur cocoon will be displayed at design miami from 30 november until 4 december and are available for purchase during the design fair. the collection will then reside through january at the boutique store / 140 ne 39th street miami

As the market for collectible design continues to evolve and mature with each edition, Design Miami/ celebrates the full diversity of its field. With the 11th edition of Design Miami/ this December, the fair offers extraordinary works from galleries based on five continents that specialize in everything from classic early twentieth century design to the conceptual cutting edge. Work ranging from full-sized architectural elements to the most delicate jewelry, by designers from as far afield as the Philippines and Japan, South Africa and Brazil, will be on show under one roof at the global forum for design.

Firma Casa, the first participating gallery from Brazil (São Paulo), offering a program that is notably strong in design from Latin America. The distinctive and innovative work of the Campana Brothers – Design Miami/ Designers of the Year in 2008 – are represented at both Firma Casa and Friedman Benda. A rare jacaranda wood bench by Modernist pioneer Joaquim Tenreiro is showing at R & Company. Cristina Grajales Gallery exhibits a spectacular coffee table by Gloria Cortina topped with golden obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. ADN Galeria of Mexico participates in the Design Curio program with a project by the Mexico-based sculptor and furniture designer Eduardo Olbés.

The scholarship, research and the preservation of historic works that are so important to the world of collectible design are aspects that are perhaps less visible to visitors to Design Miami/. A number of exhibitions at this year’s fair will put the spotlight on projects honoring design history. Galleria Rossella Colombari will recreate an interior in the style of Villa Planchart in Caracas designed by Giò Ponti, using colors and materials dear to the architect. Another apartment – this one from Milan, designed by Ponti’s protegé architect Attilio Colonello – will be recreated from historic drawings and photographs by Casati Gallery, in a scenography that will include a number of pieces from the original scheme.

There’s a story behind every piece of great design, often one that reflects personal relationships, whether between a group of like-minded creative souls, friends and mentors, hard working duos, romantic partners, or siblings. One compelling personal connection central to the history of modern design is evoked in a piece presented this year by LAFFANOUR – Galerie Downtown: a table given to Jean Prouvé by Pierre Jeanneret in 1943, and which remained in use by Prouvé’s family at his house in Nancy, France. Family relationships are evoked in pieces by Xander Kriel, who created his Vos Altar in memory of his grandfather for Southern Guild, and by Wharton Esherick, who’s graceful sculptural form The Actress (1938/9), presented by Moderne Gallery, was inspired by his daughter Mary. Thomas Fritsch will present works by Verá Szekely, co-founder, with André Borderie and her husband Pierre Szekeley, of Borderie Szekeley, a trio that created work together until 1957.

Large-scale design and architectural components continue to be a keenly anticipated highlight of the Design Miami/ program. Galerie Patrick Seguin will once again be sharing a work of pioneering mid-century modular architecture, in this case the only remaining example of Jean Prouvé’s 1939 baraque de campagne, a rapidly assembled 4 x 4m military hut. At Galerie Philippe Gravier, Kengo Kuma will present a small nomadic tearoom constructed from simple lightweight plastic materials and inspired by the humble, reclusive dwelling of the writer Kamo no Chōmei. Substantial works in wood by Wendell Castle will be on show at Friedman Benda, R & Company and Carpenters Workshop Gallery, in celebration of the American art-furniture pioneer’s equally monumental career. At Sarah Myerscough Gallery, a new generation of designers creating large, finely-crafted works in wood will be represented by Joseph Walsh. From a lighter perspective, first time gallery Orley Shabahang presents the durable, finely crafted silk rugs created by Haji Jalili in the late 19th century represent a highly portable form of monumental design. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the continuation of Naihan Li’s I Am A Monument series at Beijing-based Gallery ALL, which shrinks monumental architectural structures into playful functional pieces for the home.

Playful and sometimes pointed references to familiar everyday objects infuse certain exhibitions at Design Miami/ with visual wit. Juxtaposing precious materials and functionality, Siegfried De Buck’s silver Praline Box (1993) is the ultimate vessel for Belgium’s prized chocolate confections, showing at Caroline Van Hoek. Fellow gold and silversmith David Bielander’s thin metal jewelry pieces at Ornamentum reference the simple cardboard crowns of childhood role-play. Another familiar childhood form – in this case a paper airplane – receives a nod in Karen Chekerdjian’s IQAR table for Carwan Gallery. Eric Serritella’s series of ceramic vessels crafted to resemble sections of weathered wood will receive its most ambitious addition yet in a new, larger, work inspired by the branches and bark of a birch tree can be viewed at Jason Jacques Inc. Wolfs + Jung’s ongoing Nature V2.01 explores the disconcerting contrast of apparently natural surfaces and manmade forms: ammann// gallery will be showing new works from the series including a teetering stool balancing on sticks cast in bronze and a rounded bronze vessel apparently clad in bark.

Echoing the burgeoning interest in clay as a sculptural medium over recent years, decorative ceramics remain a strong area of creative innovation at Design Miami/. The Finnish ceramicist Kristina Riska will show Bodypart III, a sculptural vessel of vast proportions and organic curvature at Hostler Burrows. Lee Hun Chung contrasts the glassy finish of ceramic glaze with the rough, stone-like surface of concrete in a low table at Seomi International. Patrick Parrish Gallery will show the first ceramic works of painter Guy Correiro.

Geometric shapes occur both by natural and man-made design, the former often inspiring the latter. Ralph Bakker’s jewelry designs, coming to the fair with Antonella Villanova, are based on naturally occurring geometric patterns found in nature. Galerie VIVID presents geometry that changed the face of design in post World War I Europe in the form of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Zig-Zag Chair. Brian Thoreen’s work, appearing at Patrick Parrish Gallery, demonstrates his passion for geometric forms that evolve from nature.

The technical challenges and diverse effects afforded by glass continue to inspire forms both ethereal and unexpected. At Galerie kreo Julie Richoz shows new works created with glass blowers at Marseilles’s legendary CIRVA (Centre International de Recherce sur le Verre et les Arts plastique). Kyoto-born designer Ritsue Mishima – represented by Pierre Marie Giraud – moved to Venice in 1989 to work alongside the city’s fabled glassblowers, deviating from Venetian tradition to create un-pigmented works. Commonplace Studio’s Lumière series marries blown glass to contemporary technology, illuminating each globe with projections of moving images in a ghostly tribute to the early days of cinema at Victor Hunt Designart Dealer. Terence Main’s branchlike Light Pods set budlike glass elements at the tips of cast aluminum twigs to create a ‘growing’ chandelier at Magen H. Gallery.

The contrast of cold, hard metal with hide is one addressed in a multiplicity of ways at Design Miami/. The unyielding, cool lines of Maria Pergay’s stainless steel furnishings find soft contrast in their leather and hide upholstery. Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari make a more playful juxtaposition in the Body Building collection at Secondome, an ‘anti gym’ that takes formal inspiration from metal workout equipment, undercutting the hard edge with soft pink upholstery. Nanda Vigo’s fur is of the faux variety: at Erastudio Apartment-Gallery synthetic leopard skin covers her hybrid brass forms from 1971 that perform both as coat racks and lighting elements. The classic combination of hard steel face and soft leather straps appears in a number of the vintage watches with extraordinary provenance at the fair’s first watch gallery Le Collection’Heure.

From 22 May > 27 July, Carpenters Workshop Gallery will show an exceptional exhibition by the Campana Brothers. For their first gallery exhibition in France, the Brazilian designers have created, in tandem with Carpenters Workshop Gallery, a series of unusual pieces entitled «OCEAN COLLECTION», specially designed for the gallery space.

An unexpected evolution of the Campana Brothers’ signature Sushi series, the OCEAN COLLECTION builds on the mash-up of materials that resembles Japanese maki rolls developed by the Brazilian design duo back in 2002 when they were investigating methods to make upholstery without relying on traditional techniques. The pieces include a SUSHI BUFFET and a SUSHI CABINET, a fresh expression of WALL and PENDANT MIRRORS, and four VITORIA REGIA STOOL.

« We decided to use mirrors because Humberto began with mirrors that he framed with seashells’, explains Fernando. ‘So we’re re-visiting our start now using new materials and benefitting from the maturity of our work. For the Carpenters Workshop Gallery exhibition, we wanted to create an art installation where mirrors connect with other realities and become synonyms of other dimensions. In addition to the WALL MIRRORS, we created PENDANT MIRRORS because when you put them in a room they twist and turn, absorbing the space and reflecting what is around them ».

Humberto adds: « The inspiration comes from the SUSHI series that includes chairs, sofas, buffets and other objects. We decided to frame mirrors with felt, rubber carpet and EVA in different shades of green, blue and white to create a liquid atmosphere – hence the name of the exhibition. The mirrors connect to water, and we added curved lines (not unlike the shape of sushi rolls) to the frames to create different patterns of colors. Our work is handmade and hence very precious. We try to introduce humanization to the process of manufacturing, which is a key aspect of Brazilian design »

Fernando Campana (b. 1961, Brazil) and Humberto Campana (b. 1953, Brazil), respectively a trained architect and lawyer, became partners in 1983 to create a singular body of work that uses materials and techniques uncommon in the design world.

They made their name thanks to European furniture manufacturers and dealers such as the Italian furniture house Edra, the lighting company Fontana Arte and the household appliance producer Alessi, and became the undisputed ambassadors of Brazilian design in a few short years.
In their Sao Paulo workshop, a true artisanal workshop, Fernando and Humberto Campana design by « pulling things in off the street », half-way between Arte Povera and the industrial production of design objects, and use recycled materials for the most part. Brazilian culture is their main source of inspiration: the diversity of influences, the social blend, the economy of means and craftsmanship.

The Campana brothers are passionate about French culture and have worked with houses such as Lacoste (in 2009 and 2012), Bernardaud (in 2011) and Louis Vuitton (in 2012). Their latest French work includes the recent refurbishment of the Café de l’Horloge at the Musée d’Orsay. Taking their cue from Emile Gallé, the two Brazilian designers came up with a « dreamlike-aquatic » atmosphere, in homage to the great glass artist from the Lorraine and to Art Nouveau.

Famous for their unusual productions and the way they divert and recycle objects, the Campana brothers are now internationally renowned. Their work has been shown at MoMA – Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and at the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art.

In 2012, they were made « Designers of the year » at the Salon Maison & Objet in January and the same year won the Prix Création et Patrimoine of the Comité Colbert.

Campana brothers for edra and klein karoo. Milan 2011.

The Brazilian design duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana collaborate with South African leather supplier Klein Karoo company to realize the Dots collection as well as Leatherworks and Sushi for Italian furniture company Edra. The aim, to make ostrich leather spectacular and appreciated in a new and unexpected way.

The Campana Brothers, known for their interest in experimenting with new materials, introduce ostrich leather into every day pieces like stools, table and necklaces. The objects underline the diverse applications of this material by combining technology with craftsmanship. The collaboration with Klein Karoo works well in cementing their philosophy.
