alessi wins 2021 good design awards.

alessi wins 2021 good design awards.

Jan 4, 2022

above> twergi by ettore sottsass

alessi announces the recognition of four key projects designed by as many prominent figures of the international design scene in the 2021 good design® awards: with twergi by ettore sottsass, 100% make-up proust by alessandro mendini, plissé by michele de lucchi and sweetheart by jim hannon-tan

above> designed by michele de lucchi plissé collection features an electric kettle, a blender, a hand blender, a toaster, and a citrus juicer. the refined design of these small kitchen appliances perfectly embodies the alessi essence of objects conveying art and poetry, functionality paired to sophisticated aesthetical research that heightens them to domestic sculptures. echoing the fifties and sixties fashion, plissé collection covers with pleats and folds domestic objects, transforming them into contemporary objects to exhibit in all kitchen environments as modern sculptures.

above> designed by jim hannon-tan sweetheart is a nutcracker inspired by the tale of the australian crocodile carrying the same name. at nearly 6 meters in length, sweetheart had a curious penchant for attacking outboard motor propellers. in 1979 he accidentally drowned by getting tangled in a net; his stuffed remains are preserved in a museum. inspired by a late-victorian model, this nutcracker is a tribute to australian wildlife. made of cast aluminum, it is a resistant and practical object to use, suitable for opening all types of dried fruit.

above> part of the alessi 100 values collection too, 100% make-up proust designed by alessandro mendini celebrates art as a crucial component in making design, and as an intrinsic and signifying value of alessi products. an extraordinary object originally crafted in two pieces for a show in bonn in 2000 whose title was “italy-germany 4:3. fifty years of italian and german design”, now re-edited in a numbered edition of 999 pieces. the vase ideally joins the collection coordinated by alessandro mendini in 1992, titled “100% make up”, which saw 100 authors, hailing from diverse creative fields, imagine a personal decoration for the same vase designed by the designer himself. this charming object provides a new interpretation of a pattern dear to mendini, born during a trip to france in the places where the writer marcel proust lived.

above> created in 1989 with the hope of revitalizing the ancient tradition of wood turning, at the beginning of 2021 the collection twergi by ettore sottsass has been relaunched with a new color palette as part of the 100 values collection that celebrates alessi anniversary. the collection includes jars, a corkscrew, a table centerpiece and salt, pepper, and spice grinders. these are must-have objects interpreted by sottsass with his distinctive signature juxtaposition of colorful overlapping shapes, typical of his poetic vision. all the pieces are made in italy with a semi-artisanal wood turning process in compliance with strict environmental, social, and economic standards.

now in its 71st edition, [ good design ] is one of the most prestigious and recognized design awards in the world, conferred annually by the chicago athenaeum museum of architecture and design in collaboration with the european center for architecture, art, design and urban studies and metropolitan arts press, ltd. founded in chicago in 1950 by architects eero saarinen, charles and ray eames and edgar kaufmann jr., the good design® prize is awarded evaluating over 900 design, graphics, and packaging projects from more than 48 countries, based on criteria such as innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, shape, functionality, materials used, usefulness and aesthetics.

artist devin fleenor will debut s.e.e.d., an artificially intelligent installation, at museo franz mayer at part of mutek.mx and abierto mexicano de diseño in mexico city from 11 > 22 october 2017.

s.e.e.d. offers its participants an algorithmic exploration of time and the physical senses. through self-reflection, layers of consciousness are revealed and unlocked through mysterious mechanisms. full-spectrum lasers and mirrors create three dimensional geometric light structures reverberated by analog video feedback. the many reflections of the participants are synthesized, processed, and glitched forming a perplexing, yet minimal psychedelic visual experience.

housed in an eight-foot magnesium, acrylic, and glass cube, the piece is activated and modulated by human interaction. participants do not control s.e.e.d.; rather they converse with an autonomous “machine entity” using motion sensors, infrared cameras equipped with facial recognition, and a hexagonal haptic pressure sensitive interface on the face of the cube.

the visual experience is integrated with an algorithmic, immersive quadrophonic sound field. both sonic effects and emotive musical landscapes are generated by the lasers themselves, which are in turn reacting to the environment. s.e.e.d. has moods of its own, with matching behaviors, stories, reactions, and soundscapes. s.e.e.d. also understands the mood of the participant. positive emotion is monitored and remembered, allowing the installation to adapt its algorithms to give the user more of what they like.

s.e.e.d. is conceived of as an art form with research and therapeutic value: drawing from neuroscience research demonstrating that music, light, art, movement, and creativity can generate new neural pathways and enhance neuroplasticity.

fleenor is partnering with dr. sri krishnan, professor and dean of biomedical signal analysis in electrical and computer engineering at ryerson university in toronto. starting this fall semester, pending ethics review, dr. krishnan and his team of graduate students will be analyzing the biofeedback data generated by s.e.e.d. with the intention of demonstrating significant physiological changes and wellness improvements from interactive art therapy sessions. s.e.e.d. has potential as a tool for healing in those who suffer from brain trauma, alzheimer’s disease, depression, ptsd, autism, and other neurological conditions.

lead by devin fleenor and a team of designers, coders, artists, musicians, and academics, s.e.e.d. technology synthesizes advanced algorithms, artificial intelligence, high coherence laser projectors, led video, proprietary robotic laser mirrors, motion sensor cameras, multi-site interconnectivity, live hd video processing, and generative sound. the brain of s.e.e.d. is programmed in and powered by openframeworks, max for live, vdmx, ableton and beyond.

plinth at 10a thurloe place.

Sep 15, 2016

plinth commissions unique artist products and limited editions from the world’s leading contemporary artists, photographers and designers. following the success of our first pop-up and critically acclaimed exhibition within a georgian townhouse in bloomsbury during spring 2016, plinth is delighted to announce their next project space. we’ll be moving into 10a thurloe place in south kensington, to offer an incredible exhibition and events programme, over september and october 2016.

plinth will exhibit editions from our first series made in collaboration with ikon gallery, by artists richard wilson, richard deacon, cornelia parker, ding yi and beatriz milhazes. as well as this core collection, our range will include two new editions, both to be launched over the summer, by michael craig-martin and richard wentworth. these new ceramic editions chime perfectly with our philosophy of accessible art objects, and with our interest in the domestic as it meets design.

we’re committed to the format of the ‘pop-up’ because it means that the space can dictate much of its own design, and commissions are always site-specific. our show-stopping commission from british artist jacques nimki, who will create a living english meadow inside our gallery’s ground floor, is an elegant extension of our investigation into the possibilities inherent in spaces themselves – this time, bringing the outside in.

the interstice of design and art are key to our philosophy, and we’re thrilled to announce our collaboration with raw edges, who will display their hand-made furniture amongst the flora of nimki’s meadow and alongside papercuts and photographic work on the walls. raw edges’ unique and playful approach has birthed incredible collaborations, and they have developed products, installations and concepts for brands such as louis vuitton, stella mccartney, airbnb and kvadrat. international awards include elle decoration edida award, wallpaper design award and design miami’s designers of the future. they have also been nominated several times for the designs of the year award at the london design museum.

we will show new work from gaetan james, alongside screenings and performance art from emerging artists. our exhibition programme will be complemented by events timed to coincide with london design festival and frieze art fair. we will hold talks from leading photographers, journalists and curators, as well as workshops from london’s best designers and artisans.

10a thurloe place will be a dynamic space – one of the must-see events of 2016. we have two major collaborations underway; for updates on our programme as they are confirmed, please visit plinth.uk.com.

with this exhibition, nendo abstracts archetypes of manga  comics.  the  chairs  are  happy,  distressed,  embarrassed, surprised; they leap and bound, zoom past, or slowly slink away. each chair has its own personality, allowing it to stand on its own or, when placed next to the others, to become part of a collective narrative. a different configuration creates a different story; the chairs come alive in a symphonious display of nendo’s playful japanese design.

50  manga chairs is friedman benda’s third solo show with nendo and th  japanese design group’s most ambitious body of work to date. the group’s 2009 new york debut ghost stories featured the acclaimed cabbage  chair, which was initially shown in the groundbreaking exhibition xxist century man at 21_21  design site in tokyo. nendo’s 2011 exhibition scatter shelf toyed with optical illusions and repetitive forms, the idea of structure in space.

japanese fusuma photography by kenji wakasugi. ippodo gallery tokyo – ny.

japanese fusuma photography by kenji wakasugi. ippodo gallery tokyo – ny.

Mar 10, 2016

synthesis > japanese fusuma photography by kenji wakasugi | ippodo gallery tokyo – ny / 12 e. 86th street # 507 new york city / 212 967 4899
10 march > 22 april 2016 – extended to 29 april 2016

wakasugi combines views of nature he has photographed while traveling the remote regions of the world with fusuma, decorated sliding doors. these particular fusuma have been taken from a japanese room with over four hundred years of history, and his photographs have been artfully inserted into them. this represents a synthesis of opposing worlds-of interior and exterior, light and dark, stillness and motion, film and digital, old and new.

fusuma are a form of spatial device employed in traditional japanese architecture. these sliding doors are comprised simply of wood and paper and although flimsy and have no locks, they represent a spiritual boundary, separating one side from the other, absolutely. japanese rooms are not divided physically with walls, but spiritually, using fusuma; this allows people to interact freely with the space, sometimes removing these fusuma to create a large hall or reinserting them to produce a small room.

fusuma also respond gently to nature, reflecting the four seasons. the pale brush-and-ink paintings illuminated by mid-day’s light reflecting off the tatami mats on the floor; the gold and silver leaf in designs that appear to float in the light of the moon; all transmitting the poetic charm of the period. the 16th century artist, kano eitoku, sublimated these household fittings into art through his magnificent brushwork and the japanese people experience a microcosm of nature through these paintings, in which a unique, two-dimensional expression of the world unfolds. this synthesis of art and nature on the doors dividing a space may be said to spring from the japanese views of life and death.

wakasugi says that poetic sentiment exists in the space between memories. using digital technology to boldly remove the paintings applied to the fusuma by the artists of the past, he carefully replaces them with his own photographs, creating a time and space that does not exist in reality, thereby challenging the past.

it is no exaggeration to say that wakasugi kenji’s photographs inherit the traditions of the gorgeous world of fusuma painting that were developed by such great artists as tawaraya sōtatsu or ogata kōrin.

the best of design miami 2015 #1.

Dec 3, 2015

as the market for collectible design continues to evolve and mature with each edition, design miami/ celebrates the full diversity of its field. with the 11th edition of design miami/ this december, the fair offers extraordinary works from galleries based on five continents that specialize in everything from classic early twentieth century design to the conceptual cutting edge. work ranging from full-sized architectural elements to the most delicate jewelry, by designers from as far afield as the philippines and japan, south africa and brazil, will be on show under one roof at the global forum for design.

[ unbuilt ] a key installation to the event now held in the design miami/ tent across the street from art basel is the annual commission of an entry installation. previous years include architects david adjaye and snarkitecture, and most recently designer in 2014, jonathan muecke.

for the 11th edition in 2015, design miami/ has awarded a harvard graduate school of design student team the entry-pavilion commission. the chosen design, titled unbuilt, was selected last may through a gsd-wide competition that drew 32 teams comprising 100 gsd students.

this collaboration marks the first time that the design miami/ pavilion will be designed by a student group. the completed pavilion will stand at the entrance of the fair for its duration from 2 > 6 december, serving as both a beacon for the show and a place to welcome its tens of thousands of visitors.

“it is a privilege to partner with harvard gsd, one of the most amazing sources of creative thinking in the world of design,” says craig robins, design miami’s founder. “we are excited to see the students’ vision realized at design miami—a platform that has always been committed to presenting the work of emerging talent alongside material by established and historic designers.”

the unbuilt team comprises joanne cheung, jenny shen, steven meyer, doug harsevoort, and yiliu shen-burke (all march ’18). the team is advised by luis callejas, lecturer in architecture and landscape architecture; hanif kara, professor in practice of architectural technology; and dan borelli (mdes ’12), director of exhibitions.

ritsue mishima with installation ‘all’ombra della luce’ – ‘shadow of light’ / champagne house [ perrier-jouët ] traditional collaborations with designers or artists continue with a partnership with venice-based glass artist ritsue mishima. mishima creates a glass installation and a series of unique ice buckets for champagne bottles.

the installation is made of 1.400 handmade round glass plates. each of the five large blown ice bowls come with embedded round glasses for champagne, but also with traditionally-shaped, blown champagne glasses, all in mishima’s signature style of working with transparent glass and asymmetrical forms. the pieces represent bubbles of champagne in both the installation and the glasses.

[ moma design store ] the museum of modern art (moma) design store is excited to announce its first-ever installation and pop-up during the week of art basel miami beach with the skateroom at delano south beach, a morgans hotel celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. featured, a limited edition set of 32 decks each featuring a different flavor soup from andy warhol’s 32 campbell’s soup cans | delano south beach 1685 collins avenue

dm15-fendi-flagship1

[ fendi ] opens its 5,400 square foot location in the design district. exposed brick walls and cement floors add a raw element to the store’s design in deliberate contrast with the opulence of textured design. the color-blocked façade and east exterior, a collaboration with designer and architect johanna grawunder, touts the brand’s commitment to the design world. the store will house the breadth of fendi’s products including men’s and women’s rtw, fur, handbags, shoes and accessories | 150 ne 40th street
