If you’ve ever wanted to explore the ocean for hours at your leisure without anyone but yourself manning the controls, the “Ego” may just be your chance. Designed by Korean company Raonhaje, Ego is the first compact semi-submarine. It’s technically a semi-submarine because it doesn’t actually dive down into the ocean. Instead, it’s designed to float, so to speak, just under the surface of the water. The deck of the Ego acts as a buoy, keeping it at sea-level. Sure, this may not be as exciting as plummeting deep down under water and exploring, but that would also require a special license. The Ego, which operates much like a car with a foot pedal and steering wheel, can be used by anyone – no special certification required. And while it’s technically compact, the two-seater model provides more than enough room to comfortably cruise around on a battery charge that lasts between four and eight hours, depending on the speed. Moreover, Ego’s specialized electric design allows it to enter protected marine environments. So forget picnicking seaside, take your next afternoon jaunt underwater.

naoto fukasawa has designed a new table for vitra.
Executed with Fukaswa’s usual cool precision, it is called Kuubo. As Vitra notes, it “exudes purist elegance.” Its theme is hidden storage. One image shows a couple of dozen lemons tucked beneath one of its work surfaces. Are we to read a lemon into lemonade joke into this? It is also in keeping with the new trend in furniture–the “common table” that can be used for meetings or as a shared surface combining in effect many cubicles. “Kuubo lends itself to many different kinds of work processes – particularly where emphasis is placed on a successful joint team effort and where a culture of open communication is encouraged,” says Vitra’s prospectus. “Kuubo is well suited as a central team table in such an environment, serving many purposes as it can be easily adapted within seconds for different situations and uses.”

the appropriately named “beast” is the latest model to come from M55, the bike design and manufact – uring powerhouse.
M55 employs a team of electronic and mechanical engineers, industrial designers and finite element analysts to dream up, construct and tirelessly test the most cutting-edge hybrid bikes on the market. At $35,000 the “Beast” is a luxury item to be sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s not capable of performing under intense off-road conditions. A specialized motor works with the rider instead of simply being operated by him/her. “The motor is not a substitute for your human power, but an addition. If the sensor feels that you need some extra torque, the motor switches on to multiply your effort.”
It also boasts some serious components, like motor power and battery capacity above and beyond the industry standard and brakes by Brembo, heretofore found only on Formula1 race cars. After checking out the specs it’s easy to agree with M55’s boast that “if Batman was a nonfictional person, he’d have a Beast in his garage.”
