on april 28th wright presents a distinctive curated collection of artworks and designed objects at auction with Living Contemporary. [ auction: 28 april 2011 | 12pm cst ]

The Living Contemporary auction combines remarkable works of art and exceptional designs from the past century to fashion a compelling and refined environment for living today. Artistic highlights include a photograph by Cindy Sherman from her landmark series Untitled Film Stills and a drawing by George Grosz who is known for his critical depictions of life in Berlin during the 1920s. Works by reputed artists, including Jörg Immendorf, Andy Warhol, David Hockney and John Chamberlain as well as modern-day, international artists such as Zhan Wang and Zhang Huan will also be sold.

Prominent designs complement the artworks included in this sale. From the organic and natural forms Mathias Bengtsson to the futuristic and colorful work of Marc Newson or the cool and ultramodern designs of Ron Arad, this sale integrates incongruent shapes, materials and modes of construction into a seamless and comprehensive reflection of sophistication. Work by Shiro Kuramata, Gerald Summers, Gilbert Poillerat, Ettore Sottsass, Maison Jansen, Zaha Hadid and Michelangelo Pistoletto and various other essential designers will be featured in this auction.

Living Contemporary is the second sale in a series of auctions dedicated to the integration of important functional and non-functional works. Volume Gallery launches its fourth series with a collection of new works from Jonathan Muecke, titled Open Objects. Opening reception on April 30th from 6-8PM, Chicago, IL.

Open Objects represents Jonathan Muecke’s first solo exhibition, comprised of eight objects. The individual objects designed for Volume Gallery, were developed independent of each other. Rather than a collection, Muecke considers each object its own project, the result being that each object is consistent to its counterparts only in its potential – “a quality that is itself immeasurable”.

Leaving all to interpretation, Open Objects is a comprehensive study of each object’s unique qualities, and dissection of their definition. Muecke’s projects are a reflection of the common forms of design and continue to study the meta-object. His projects demand examination. It is within this confrontation, between viewer and object, that development of new thought on functionality and materiality lives. Utilizing materials such as coal slag, glass sand, carbon fiber and gold foil, each piece removes our limitations of understanding and encourages the viewer to engage and interact, rather than react to the object.

“Principally, objects present limits– figured in function/process/material/form/idea and so on. In this case objects are measured to each variable and equally fixed in the variables. In this normal and productive way objects are figured backwards. My interest is going forward – remaining inconclusive to the terms of measurement. In this way potential remains in an object.”

Jonathan Muecke operates around the edge of design; he emphasizes each object’s conceptual purpose and universal meaning. Open Objects is his continual practice to un-define objects while defining something larger. Each object is restrained and composed in design, raw and visionary in intent. Each project in Open Objects is firmly tied together with the strong visual language that is inimitable, unique and undeniable.

Jonathan Muecke
Jonathan Muecke was born in 1983 in Cody, Wyoming. He works from his studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota since his graduation from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010 where from 2009-10 he was the Florence Knoll scholar. In 2006 he received a Bachelors of Architecture from Iowa State University followed in 2007 by an internship at the architectural office of Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland. In July of 2010 the jury of the Design Parade 5 (Hyéres, France) assigned him the Veuve Clicquot Award. His field of work circulates around the periphery of design.

Volume Gallery
Volume Gallery is an event-based gallery with a specific focus on American design, particularly emerging contemporary designers. Founded by Claire Warner and Sam Vinz, formerly of Wright Auction, Volume Gallery releases editions, publications and exhibits that showcase the work of American designers to regional, national and international audiences.

News to me! The Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), in association with the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, introduces Passione Italiana – an examination of the astonishing design passion and technological advancement behind the most desired motorcycles in the world. This exhibition presents eleven masterpieces of Italian motorcycle design spanning the last five decades including motorcycles by MV Agusta, Ducati, Bimota and Moto – Morini.

The Brazilian design duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana collaborate with South African leather supplier Klein Karoo company to realize the Dots collection as well as Leatherworks and Sushi for Italian furniture company Edra. The aim, to make ostrich leather spectacular and appreciated in a new and unexpected way.

The Campana Brothers, known for their interest in experimenting with new materials, introduce ostrich leather into every day pieces like stools, table and necklaces. The objects underline the diverse applications of this material by combining technology with craftsmanship. The collaboration with Klein Karoo works well in cementing their philosophy.

British manufacturer, Established & Sons products are for all intents and purposes divided into two categories. One is the collaboration with independent designer(s), the other their in-house more cost-conscious label, Estd. Here are new tabletop offerings from Estd.

Above: “Pour” where its sliced off nose becomes its spout. “Potto” incorporates a soft lid for non-slip stacking. Made of Japanese Tokoname ceramic (black in color) but feels like rubber. “Loaf” is simple in its bent wood structure. Bowlers love the lid. “Takeaway,” is a folded sheet metal container for one’s small things. “Cuboid” is a door stop, or whatever, with a forced perspective. Be on the alert for the 2011 principal collection.

Designed in 1996, Knotted Chair is one of the first projects designed by Marcel Wanders for Cappellini. Since then, the collaboration between the designer and the company still continues, with projects that are innovative and alluring. Now, 15 years and 1001 Knotted Chairs later, the first production of the piece will end. The final 25 Knotted Chairs in this version will be sold during the Milano Design Week.

Cappellini presents the 2011 collection as if it were in a giant box of sweets: fallen from above, one flap open to reveal its delightful contents. Groups of objects in different colours, shapes and materials, communicating with one another, creating a fun and playful setting against the silver-walled background of a giant magenta booth.

14 products by 11 designers once again reaffirm the adventurous spirit of Cappellini and its innate ability to surprise us with vibrant avant-garde projects, each of which draws strength from the richness of its language. The magical and delicate language of Nendo is apparent in the lines and sinuous curves of the Sekitei chair and the straight sharp lines of Thin Black Table; two products in which dotted lines give shape and the substance. Then there is the oriental influence of the Doshi Levien duo, who this year present their first design for Cappellini with the sophisticated Cape armchair.

Another two new designers are Raphael Navot with POH, a sculptured object, and Daphna Laurens with the Tafelstukken range of lamps: both prototypes strongly characterized by the presence of natural materials such as wood. This is a journey which will ideally follow that of Martin Vallin’s The Secret Clubhouse chair, presented as a prototype in 2010 and now part of the permanent collection. Also presented are the technical materials and angular forms of the Kobe table by Leonardo Talarico and the already famous sculptured Tron Armchair by Dror, now industrialized for mass production.

This is opposed to the “supernormality” of the now iconic projects of Jasper Morrison who, with the Bac One and Bac Two chairs, adds two more elements to the Bac family. Last but not least, living room furniture; the new system of Burkina Faso microcontainers by Giulio Cappellini is colouful, contemporary and functional, while the Cuba 25 by Rodolfo Dordoni and Basket by the Bouroullec brothers each offer two completely opposing conceptions and interpretations of the sofa. Open and closed, but able coexist and interact in harmony with the other elements of the Cappellini collection, the bookcases and the storage systems.
