The third ‘Solutions’ special exhibition at Ambiente 2014 continues to focus on well-thought out functionality. This exhibit was conceived by London designer Sebastian Bergne and in 2014, he and co-curators Marcel Stut (essen & trinken magazine) and Claus Tormöhlen (galeria kaufhof department store), select 23 products out of a growing number of submissions. ‘Not all of these products are beautiful in form but they’re beautiful in functionality and use of innovative technology and materials, and that makes the products something to reckon with,’ Bergne says. DesignApplause notices 2014 includes more bigger players than 2013. Though no awards are given, this collection in some ways is as important as a design competition. Three entries in ‘solutions’ were also winners in ‘design plus‘

The Design Museum in London, presents “In the Making” an exhibition curated by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. An interesting theme is the capturing in various and unfinished states of the production process of 24 objects. The curators comment ‘We have always been fascinated by the making process as it is an integral part of our work. We have curated an exhibition that will provide a platform to capture and reveal a frozen moment in the manufacturing process and unveils an everyday object in its unfinished state. Often the object is as beautiful, if not more so, than the finished product!’

Most of the pieces are everyday objects – we see forks, pencils, tennis balls and a Coke can. There are indeed B&O objects. The 2012 Olympic torch. My favorite is indeed a B&O creation for Italian furniture producer Vitra, the Tip Ton Chair. The chair is made of made of polypropylene and is manufactured from a single mould without the use of mechanical components. This makes it extremely durable and up to 100% recyclable and defines a whole new chair typology: the solid plastic chair with forward-tilt action. The chair still may need to prove that its ‘half-rock’ feature is both good for the back and blood circulation. Tip Ton is also a candidate for iconic object with its innovative and proprietary profile.

An important underlying idea in the installation is a glance at the ongoing dialogue between designers and manufacturing through the making process. ‘This perspective is distinctive to their practice: throughout their careers, Edward and Jay have had a curiosity about the way things are made.’ Though there are several videos of the manufacturing process the ‘in the making’ theme presented an opportunity to go a little deeper into the ‘dialogue’ idea, a unique difference maker with some of the more function-driven, innovation-driven and design-driven objects in this show and like-kind successful objects in general. After all, how do certain products fulfill a need the best or become become iconic in their form and sensitivity. If you indeed get into what’s going on here, prepare to be educated, entertained and maybe even inspired. And discover in London that many of the most advanced techniques for the production of furniture were born right in the Bel Paese.
The exhibition opened on the 22 January and goes until 4 May 2014.

Christie’s New York will auction a major collection of work by designer Ettore Sottsass. It is on display to the public until December 20 in the auction house showroom at Rockefeller Center—only steps from the tourist swarmed Christmas tree and skating rink. The godfather of Memphis shows himself a master of primal forms and whimsical ones as well, witty and iconic in his furniture and ceramics and often at the same time. Included are drawings, graphics, prototypes and other items.
[ christie’s statement ] Ettore Sottsass Jr. (1917-2007) has endured as one of the most significant and influential post-war architect-designers, whose idiosyncratic and versatile talents have guided a modern understanding of the relevance of Design. Fluent across all categories of expression, from architecture to craft, Sottsass was a unique personality that was able to synthesize seemingly disparate influences to render his own distinctive and highly painterly design vocabulary – one that was invested with symbolism and metaphor – erasing the distinctions that were perceived to exist between the fine and the decorative arts.
The collection gathered for this exhibition is fluently representative of the critical period encompassing the late 1950s to the late 1960s, illustrating his evolution from commercial experimentation towards the establishment of an aesthetic credo that was resolved, defined, and invested with highly personal mythologies. Drawn from the personal possessions of the designer and his wife, Fernanda Pivano (1917-2009), and encompassing furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and jewelry, alongside artworks, drawings, collages and a complete series of the self-published artists’ and poets’ books, the collection summons revised interpretation of this universally influential personality. Presented now for the first time, the exhibition will highlight previously unseen works, including furnishings and objects from the couple’s Milan apartment, now published for the first time since Domus magazine chronicled their home in 1967. This unique exhibition delineates the stylistic and conceptual narrative that invokes a unique opportunity for reassessment, and an enriched interpretation of this pioneering figure. [ details ]
