above & below > tykho 2 radio

tykho is the biggest of all the small radios. the new tykho 2 radio versions presented this year project it into a future that is both more demanding and musically intense: more and more powerful speakers, body water resistant, tykho radio second name, bluetooth speakers tykho booster and tykho speaker insist on being taken away all over.

saga tykho continues

last generation in the tykho saga, tykho 2 renovates the tykho radio by bringing it, too, a new speaker water resistant. with this organ donation tykho radio 2 will perpetuate its “icon status”.

description >

material: abs rubber / steel

$ 80.00 usd

if tykho radio was thought (almost 20 years ago) to listen to morning news, set to your favorite station, brush your teeth, tykho booster and tykho speaker have been created to listen to music “anytime, anywhere, indoor, outdoor”: both in the bathroom and in the garden and especially by the pool or on a boat. dressed in a thick colored elastomer gown equipped with water resistant speakers and of course connected to your smartphone. these bluetooth speakers, rechargeable batteries will be of all the holidays.

the signature of marc berthier is here emblematic of lexon‘s delusion in a vision of design, and its attachment to one of the most important personalities of french design, duly medal and finally recognized. the tykho collection is itself a design dream, an ever-irresistible demonstration of intelligence and humor.

design for disruption: gopro.

patton-gopro-hero4-1gopro’s top-of-the-line hero4 black

eric woodman, who founded gopro, the miniature camera company, in 2002, said on sixty minutes that “it has revealed the hidden perspectives of human life.” yes, he had a stock to sell, and we expect boasts of profound impact for their products from entrepreneurs post steve jobs of course, but that is a surprisingly profound insight.

the gopro allowed people to record and share their best waves in surfing, their wildest leaps in mountain biking –and now their adventures driving.

above> photographer eric sterman using a phantom drone and hero 3+ shoots surfing the bonzai pipeline last december 2013.

gopro is helping to bring the dashboard camera into the main stream. bmw and mini now allow for control of the gopro camera from the vehicle software. the gopro seems on the verge of making the great leap that navigation units did a few years ago, from techie accessory to next cool thing. and they may fundamentally change the way we drive and think about driving.

patton-gopro-suction1

the story of popular dash cams in the us begins with the meteorite that exploded near the russian city of chelyabinsk on february, 15, 2013. it injured 1500 people, caused millions of rubles of damage and made americans aware that many russians had dash cams in their cars–for their own protection. not only did the cameras record celestial events, it turns out, but misdeeds by other drivers and law enforcers, posted online.

video from dash cams has a vast life online. in the u.s. it was mostly police imagery: bizarre driver responses to being pulled over and humorous dancing field sobriety tests. no wonder woodman regards the real product of the go pro corporation not as cameras, not even as compilations of video made with the cameras but as the social media surrounding the compilation of the clips. by letting us record moments of adventure, on the road, or entire journeys and sharing them with other people, dash cams could have the same effect on the experience of driving .

some drivers will want to record episodes of horror or humor, others to document rapid or romantic stretches of road. there is a long tradition of filming drives, but you pretty much had to be a professional movie maker to do it. the most famous example is the cult film of a high speed early morning run through paris made in 1976 by director claude lelouch—director of a man and woman–the high-speed short film c’était un rendez-vous.

it is a very french film and often the flavor of dash cam compilations reflects personality and nationality. the russian compilations suggest the wild west quality of its highways. japanese compilations, by contrast, include terrifying tsunami footage and accidents, maintained by japanese trucking association for safety warnings. but the japanese counterpart of russia’s flying cows is different: the japanese news service asahi shinbun reports that dora dora douga website draws 160,000 monthly viewers to a “beautiful landscape” and “unique scenery” site. the dawn of gifu, a landscape view of gifu prefecture, is most popular.

another use for go pros has recently been proposed. officials all the way up to president obama have suggested issuing body cameras to police officers to help reduce mistaken shootings. but here too the disruptions of the innovation may surprise: won’t these cameras emphasize the point of view of the police officer more than that of the victim?

One in particular went viral, shot by videographer Jos Stiglingh who was presented with a unique opportunity to film fireworks up close, also used a Phantom 2 and Hero3+ Silver. 2014 may become known as the year of dronography and fireworks credited with fully catching the public’s eye. Design Prototype 100 joins stable of Vision Gran Turismo racers in popular racing game for PlayStation®3. Designed and engineered over six months by Aston Martin Design team. Downloadable for in-game play in July 2014.

Sure it’s just a car for a video game but the Aston Martin DP100 is a sharp and real vision of future design. Released at the Goodwood festival of speed the new car will run in Gran Turismo 6.

[ press release – edited ]
Aston Martin is unveiling an exceptional new addition to the hugely popular PlayStation®3 exclusive racing game Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) in the shape of the stunning Design Prototype 100 – DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo.

Developed in-house by the Design team at Aston Martin, led by Design Director Marek Reichman, DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo is a new, virtual-only GT racer that will be available for Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) owners to download in July 2014, following the global launch at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Starting with nothing but the traditional ‘blank sheet of paper’ the design team and design engineers worked for six months to create the new addition to the Vision Gran Turismo stable of race cars. Clearly pushing the boundaries of what an Aston Martin could be, DP-100 not only looks beautiful but also boasts a high degree of engineering integrity.

The twin-turbo V12 mid-engined racer offers up to 800bhp, endowing it with blistering performance fully in keeping with the high octane nature of the game.

Created utilizing many of the same techniques as applied in the development of Aston Martin production sports cars – hand sketches and 3D modeling, followed by full realization in the virtual world – DP-100 provides an exceptional level of detail with a fully functioning suspension system and state-of-the-art electronics.

Design Director Marek Reichman said: “DP-100 has been an exciting and intensive project for the team here at Gaydon. “Features such as the car’s revolutionary ‘active aerodynamics’ are there not just as a way of enhancing form, but also to support the car’s function in-game.

“As with the CC100 Speedster Concept, many of the design cues visible in DP-100, such as the light blade rear lamps, could also feed through into future sports cars that we’ll launch in the offline world so the importance of this project should not be underestimated.”

Aston Martin has supported previous editions of the long-running and hugely successful Gran Turismo® series, debuting in the very first game with the Aston Martin DB7 Coupé and Volante. The stunning 2011 Aston Martin One-77 is already a popular car in the Gran Turismo® 6 stable.

Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo and President of Polyphony Digital Inc, enthused: “When I first came face to face with this car at the Aston Martin Headquarters in Gaydon, UK, I was at a loss for words seeing the level of perfection in its design. I was surprised by the bold proposal of the car being the first midship layout model in Aston Martin history. And while it is clean and classy in design, it is also very emotional. Not only that, there was this future Aston Martin in front of me, that was so detailed it could be released on the market pretty much as is.”

Wallpaper* Handmade returned to the Leclettico gallery for its fifth celebration of craft and creativity at Salone del Mobile. The gallery is located in Gregorio Docet, the newest go-to design district in Milan and we spent the entire morning looking around the neighborhood after having a long visit at Homemade. What’s captivating about Milan Design Week is the sheer volume and diversity of high-level offerings. From iconic showrooms, Rho’s fairground and pop-ups everywhere. Homemade inspires and entertains us with one-off items of furniture, fittings, fashions, food and more, many exhibitors having only two-three months to conceive and execute. There were over 70 exhibitors. Each has a wonderfully interesting story behind them. Here’s just a few.

milan14-wallpaper-gabrielle1‘room divider’ | gabrielle shelton (pictured) and chris rucker

[DesignApplause] Gabrielle, tell us about yourself and what are you up at Handmade?
[Gabrielle Shelton] I’m from Los Angeles but have been living & working in Brooklyn for 19 years which is longer than I lived in LA so I am a Brooklynite. I collaborated with another artist, Chris Rucker, and we were interested in New York City’s history of metalwork and textiles and collaborating on something a little different than we normally do. We’re both builders and this vanity screen or room divider expresses a typology of a different scale. The screens represents certain areas of a room or divisions between construction or streets. Chris uses old moving blankets, and these blankets have been used to move things from shops to job sites. They’ve been in the back of a truck, they’ve gotten mouldy and stained. And he’s taken them apart, taken all the padding out of them and re-quilted them for this piece. My work is the all handmade brass frame. Everything has been machined, the screws, the turns, the hinges. And it’s all mechanical, no welds, no solders, no brazings.
[DA] You’re a sculpter, a metalsmith, a welder?
[GS] I don’t wear heels in the shop. One of my uncles is a welder and I learned how to weld when I was 12 years old. Now I have a metal shop.

[DA] The extensive amount from scratch of art and craftsmanship is sinking in. How much time from concept to finished piece?
[GS] A little less than two months. Chris and I are very busy and we did this all at night and on weekends. There was some texting and some long studio nights with beers.

[DA] What’s your body of work like?
[GS] I specialize in staircases, walls, hardware, furniture. I most recently did the staircase at the David Zwirner Gallery.

[DesignApplause] Yunsil, tell us about Everyware and T.Able.
[Yunsil Heo] Everyware is an interactive media group in Seoul and consists of me and my husband, Hyunwoo Bang. ’T.Able’ is an interactive project in development for two years and is a system where light interacts with objects, in this case cups on a table. You’re looking at a series of programmed graphics guided by infared information that detects both motion and objects.

[DA] What do you see as a practical application?
[YH ] There are opportunities for hotels or restaurants, for example, to incorporate creative art or lighting that enhance interior experiences. There are applications that are only limited by your creativity. If someone asks us to create a specific application for their needs we can accommodate them.

[DA] What’s your background(s)?
[YH ] I studied graphic design and later computer graphics programming (M.F.A. UCLA design/media arts, B.A. and Ph.D. Seoul Nat’l Univ) and my husband studied mechanical engineering (B.S. and Ph.D. mechanical and aerospace engineering Seoul Nat’l Univ and Postdoctoral Fellow biomedical engineering UCLA).

milan14-wallpaper-mirror1‘revaluation’ obsidian mirrors | studio drift | ralph nauta and lonneke gordijn | studio drift

[DesignApplause] Ralph and Lonneke, I have a feeling this going to be quite technical.
[Lonneke Gordijn] Yes, get ready. Our concept addresses the excessive chemical waste problem the world is presented with today. We are using obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimum crystal growth. Our source of obsidian comes from a chemical engineer who’s been working with this material for the past 30 years, extracting 100% chemical wastes in the process. For us we use the ashes from the process and shape, glaze and polish. We can polish to a mirror-like finish. In a way, you have a reflection of yourself in your own waste.
[DA] When you’re wasted.
[LG] (laughing) Exactly! Our engineer currently has a small factory but has the ambition to create a larger commercial factory that extracts waste in great quantity. Our handmade piece for the show is a symbol of this process and his effort and we wanted to make an object that doesn’t relate to or look like waste. Our goal has grown to promote this technology to factories all over the world.

[DA] How did you meet this engineer?
[LG] We met him through mutual friends. Our friend said he makes gold and silver from chemical wastes and we said we must meet this guy!

[DA] How did you approach this challenge?
[Ralph Nauta] We know glass so that was our logical starting point but obsidian has a different melting temperature and cools at a different rate. Once we could liquify the material and understand it we were able to use molds made of sand to take us to the next step. Obsidian also behaves differently than glass as it holds warmth and cools much more slowly. We thought maybe a cool-down of five days but it was still 50 degrees. The trick is too cool it down slowly to reduce all the molecular tension. This piece from liquid to cool enough to touch takes about a week.
[LG] It’s also super heavy. It’s very weird, it sounds like metal when tapped but it works like glass. We’re still in the middle of the process and just have this one piece. And we’re still learning. We will cool down our next piece more slowly. It also feels a bit weird that it’s like baking a cake made with ingredients that make up our planet, that we stand on the ingredients of this cake everyday.
