friedman benda and nendo present 50 manga chairs. the installation of polished aluminum chairs will make its european premier at basilica minore di san simpliciano, in conjunction with salone del mobile milano, 12 > 17 april 2016 and its american premier in a solo exhibition at the friedman benda gallery in new york, 8 september 8 > 15 october 2016.

with this exhibition, nendo abstracts archetypes of manga comics. the chairs are happy, distressed, embarrassed, surprised; they leap and bound, zoom past, or slowly slink away. each chair has its own personality, allowing it to stand on its own or, when placed next to the others, to become part of a collective narrative. a different configuration creates a different story; the chairs come alive in a symphonious display of nendo’s playful japanese design.

50 manga chairs is friedman benda’s third solo show with nendo and th japanese design group’s most ambitious body of work to date. the group’s 2009 new york debut ghost stories featured the acclaimed cabbage chair, which was initially shown in the groundbreaking exhibition xxist century man at 21_21 design site in tokyo. nendo’s 2011 exhibition scatter shelf toyed with optical illusions and repetitive forms, the idea of structure in space.

[ nendo ] founded in tokyo in 2002, with a second office established in milan in 2005, has received many distinctions, including the iconic design award ‘interior designer of the year’ in 2015, wallpaper* magazine’s ‘designer of the year’ in 2012, and the ‘red dot design award’ in germany in 2008. in 2011, nendo presented visible structures, a solo commission for the high museum of art, atlanta, visible structures was also included in modern by design, a collaborative exhibition between the high museum of art and the museum of modern art, new york.

risd furniture design & textiles present in xxi triennale in milan and icff in new york.

the departments of furniture design and textiles at rhode island school of design [ risd ] are presenting the narrative of making at the xxi triennale international exhibition milan 2016 (xx1t) and at the 2016 international contemporary furniture fair (icff) in new york city.

the featured work is based on in-depth, multidisciplinary materials research, with furniture design students partnering with peers in textiles to rethink the use of soft materials in furniture design. rather than using conventional techniques to cover furniture with foam and textiles, in this work students emphasize the inherent qualities of the materials through methods based on weaving, knitting, knotting and crocheting.

throughout the fall 2015 semester, students developed a series of models that led to a full-scale mock-up; these in-depth explorations provided a solid foundation for the construction of the final, well-executed prototypes for the shows.

a collection of eight interior surfacing products created in collaboration with amsterdam-based textile designer, mae engelgeer. the collection, comprising four upholstery, one drapery textile, and three digital print wallcoverings,

wolf-gordon collaborated closely with engelgeer to design a cohesive collection characterized by repetitive geometries of varying scales. engelgeer’s graphic elements and diverse explorations of texture evoke the craftsmanship and authenticity of dutch modernism. engelgeer draws heavily on her knowledge of traditional weaving techniques, interpreting them through a 21st century lens. the resulting collection is a series of patterns that celebrate dynamic equilibrium—asymmetrical yet balanced—clean lines, abstract geometric forms, rich textures, and simple, sophisticated detailing. the palette for level includes a broad range of elegant neutrals and muted hues, many incorporating accents of metallic threads.

mae engelgeer: perhaps because of my background in fashion, i always tend to think in terms of a collection in my design process. the challenge of finding a color combination or a graphic element that can be used in different ways across a collection is very rewarding. the result is a cohesive, contemporary collection that combines sleek, urban 21st century design with a sense of craftsmanship and authenticity.

the complete history of the “bora” drinking glass on display in the duvetica space designed by tadao ando. its unique and original shape with its curved lines – “as if the bora wind had blown against it” – is a design of carlo and giovanni moretti. a collection of over 130 pieces of the venetian artisan factory realized from 2001 to today in murano crystal. 12 > 22 april 2016

to celebrate the launch of splatter-painted last stool splatter by british designer max lamb, hem has collaborated with italian gelato maker gelateria rigoletto on four custom gelato flavors inspired by stracciatella gelato – one to match each style stool. tuesday through friday, hem will be hosting ice cream socials with philippe malouin, karoline fesser, max lamb and studio deform. 12 > 15 april

and the winner is…claire christianson, a sophomore at providence academy, chose as her inspiration object a painted porcelain art nouveau vase. christianson explained, “i was inspired by the media of the art nouveau vase. my chair’s form was taken from the tons of little ribbons of clay trimmings that the potter cut off in pursuit of his masterpiece.”

cooper hewitt, smithsonian design museum announces the launch of student design challenge #thinkoutside, its first-ever nationwide competition for high school students, inviting them to submit ideas for an outdoor chair inspired by objects from the museum’s collection. organized by cooper hewitt in collaboration with target, the challenge’s winning chair design will be manufactured by the retailer for exclusive use in the museum’s recently redesigned arthur ross terrace and garden.

fellow [ finalists ] lauren schrempp (new york), valerie taranto (new jersey), ryan thompson (illinois), and tanner wall (florida), traveled to new york to participate in a design workshop at cooper hewitt with members of target’s design team and museum educators. on sunday, april 3, the finalists presented his or her design in person to the judges.

[ the judges ] cooper hewitt director caroline baumann was joined by a panel of creative experts to evaluate the finalists’ designs, including national design award winner walter hood, principal and founder, hood design; steven keating, head of performance footwear design, puma; rachel shechtman, founder, story; tana smith, youtube star “tanamontana100” and author; todd waterbury, chief creative officer, target; and tony whitfield, associate professor of art and design, parsons school of design. susanna sirefman, president of dovetail design strategists and competition advisor for the challenge moderated the panel’s deliberations. above> godot is a comfortable and generous sofa series comprising 2- and 3-seater sofas as well as an armchair. the geometrical interior belongs to the occupant and the exterior belongs to the room. the geometry permits side by side as well as back to back. kvadrat textiles are used for the upholstery. iskos — berlin design is a partnership between boris berlin and aleksej iskos.

below> the afternoon chair, drew inspiration from two modernist designs – michael thonet’s classic bentwood armchair and børge mogensen’s spanish chair. interpretation of these icons is afternoon lounge chair, with leather upholstery and steel arms that curve around to form a continuous backrest.

above> an inspiration for the lamp on the edge came after observing different private homes. a common denominator for the spaces observed reflect a more multifunctional usage of the rooms. the “on the edge” lamp is an interpretation of this tendency. suitable for indirect lighting, the versatile lamp also works as a pendant as well as a floor lamp. made of ceramic.

inspired by the windows of holy sites as the ones created by gerhard richter for cologne’s cathedral and characterized by contemporary patterns, colors and materials, is produced in italy by artisans skilled in the thousand-year old manual technique of stained glass. called credenza, the collection’s name carries the essence of the concept: in italian means both a cupboard and one’s belief.

during the salone del mobile 2016, from 12 to 17 april in milan, luceplan celebrates the 30th anniversary of the costanza lamp. this is the start of a series of special events that will continue throughout the year, as a tribute to the inimitable lamp designed in 1986 by paolo rizzatto.

luceplan’s first big success, costanza springs from a simple yet brilliant intuition: to revise and reinterpret the classic lamp with shade, combining simple form with highly innovative technological solutions, like the self-supporting shade in polycarbonate and the sensorial touch dimmer. a unique, unmistakable design object, costanza is now an icon found in millions of private homes all over the world, and selected by great designers for prestigious contract solutions, hotels and offi ces. thanks to its essential elegance and the wide range of models and colors, costanza fi ts perfectly into any type of setting.

a project of communication, operating on various fronts, relying on a synergic, engaging strategy to narrate 30 years of costanza and its universe. not just a dedicated advertising campaign, featuring a commemorative photograph with 150 costanza lamps forming the number 30, but also a video installation based on the making of the picture, and a special fuorisalone event. the new displays in the milan showroom are part of the strategy, showing different types and tones of costanza as the absolute protagonist of the windows on corso monforte, the fulcrum of milan’s “light district.”

above> embroidery chair | johan lindsten | cappellini | 2016
the four seasons are the characters of embroidery chair series by johan lindsten. expressing the encounter between the embroidery tradition passed down through generations and next-generation industrial technology, these four chairs with ash wood body and backrests with cross-stitch embroidery on tapestry wool depict painterly landscape scenes drawn from the essence of the four seasons. colors change together with seasons from the ash stained walnut shell of autumn to the white ash of spring, from the black stained ash of winter to the red stained ash of summer.

 orla plus collection by jasper morrison is the tale of the development and evolution of orla project. the asymmetry theme combined with smooth lines is the leitmotif of this collection that consists of sofas in either two- or three-seater models, an armchair and a swivel chair. fixed cover for the base and removable covers for the cushions are available in all fabrics and leathers of the collection. the pillows are removable and have polyurethane foam padding.

the artist bertjan pot has designed an exclusive bespoke textile in three jacquard versions for the utrecht armchair giving a contemporary twist to this icon by gerrit t. rietveld. the architecture of the armchair is reflected in the innovative workmanship of the boxblocks fabric which is made up of 8 colored threads mixed 2 at a time to create 19 different colors on a template which outlines the shape of the armchair. carried out with an advanced computer controlled jacquard weaving machine. the result is a unique and perfectly balanced geometric pattern in which the combination of triangles is never repeated. a homage to dutch creativity, each unique boxblocks version fits 90 limited edition pieces like a tailor-made dress, for a total of 270 models, which are progressively numbered to guarantee the cassina mark of authenticity. the utrecht armchair was designed in 1935 and has been exclusively produced by cassina since 1988.

“my concepts are never single lined or step by step but they are always a meeting point of different ideas and feelings.
for the boxblocks textile of the utrecht it was important for me to do something today that was not technically possible at the time of the armchair’s creation.
the pattern is inspired by the modernist ‘block-sculptural’ shape of the chair itself. when talking patterns there are generally two types, one is the pattern that respects the product and enhances its shape (think traditional tartan checks and stripes), the other is the pattern that crosses seams and dazzles its actual shape (think zebra stripes and large organic flower prints)… this one does both.”

jean-marie massaud designs lloyd, a system of storage units and bookcases with variable geometries. thin vertical wooden rods create light grilles that run from top to bottom on invisible horizontal rails. each grille can be moved as desired to create sequences that are different each time. a fluctuating score of solids and voids, of light and shade. a sensual game that offers a glimpse of the contents, books and objects, without fully revealing them.

the most advanced technology is combined with traditional materials, wood and saddle leather, to form a solid and minimalist structure. the effect is almost intangible, transparent. the horizontal elements on which the grilles slide are made from hpl, a material which even in very thin layers guarantees stability and strength, with a natural oak veneer. the vertical uprights, in mdf covered with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather, are placed at regular intervals to give the piece of furniture rhythm and enhance the liberating effect of the grilles.

each individual grille is a painstaking piece of cabinetwork. the solid oak rods are cut in different thicknesses and then individually glued by hand. given the very reduced surfaces of the rods, the lead-colored dye is also applied by hand in several phases.

there is an infinite number of possible compositions. in the wall version the base is closed by mdf panels covered, like the uprights, with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather. in the freestanding version, the mobile grilles run along both sides for an even more vibrant and chiaroscuro effect. in all variants the sides of the structure are closed by fixed grilles.

the lloyd can take the form of large bookcases or open storage units of various sizes. widths range from 225 to 280 cm, heights from 46 to 188 cm and its depth is 42.5 cm. the composition can rest on lead-colored solid oak stands or sit directly on the floor on steel feet with matt gunmetal grey finish.
