[ luminaire ] continues its commitment to viscerally connecting the public with contemporary design by hosting muti-disciplinary italian architect and designer antonio citterio for a lecture and exhibition in chicago. on tuesday, june 13th, citterio will present a lecture at the museum of contemporary art chicago which will be followed by an opening reception for the inauguration of a month-long exhibition of the designer’s work at luminaire chicago showroom. aiming to uncover the connective stories between process, product, and design, the exhibition will feature iconic pieces designed by antonio citterio for renowned brands b&b italia, vitra, and flos.
antonio citterio’s design philosophy has always been focused on a method, not a style. the metamorphosis of an idea or an intention, into a project or a product, takes place by means of the alchemy that is the relationship between him as an architect/designer and the client. his all-encompassing design sensibility is reminiscent of the total environments created by arne jacobsen. a proponent of rational design, citterio has produced truly innovative furniture design while paying homage to influences such as eileen gray, charles and ray eames, and george nelson. winner of the compasso d’oro award in 1987 and 1995, his products are part of the moma permanent collection in new york and the centre pompidou in paris.
the month-long exhibition showcases a curated selection of citterio’s iconic designs for an array of manufacturers. included in the installation is the mart lounge chair (b&b italia, 2003), charles sofa (b&b italia, 1997), ac4 task chairs (vitra, 2008), grand repos armchair (vitra, 2011), kelvin led lighting (flos, 2009), a.b.c. lounge chair (flexform, 1996), citterio e bathroom fixtures (axor, 2014), battista trolley (kartell, 1991), and design-focused gym equipment from technogym. throughout the showroom, additional products by citterio will be on display. the exhibition will also display multi-media presentations that share the stories and methods behind the featured products. these visual aids will additionally showcase the designer’s architectural works from around the globe which compliment and enrich the storytelling experience of the exhibition.
luminaire has shared citterio’s unique insights about architecture and design with audiences in both miami and chicago on several occasions throughout the years. in june 2004, luminaire was the first to present citterio’s stunning new lighting collection for flos. he also discussed his architecture and design projects at the opening of luminaire’s superior street location in chicago in november 1992, and luminaire welcomed antonio citterio and terry dwan as guests of honor at “milan in miami,” an evening gala and exhibit that celebrated luminaire’s 21st anniversary in june 1995.
to help luminaire in the quest for fighting cancer, citterio also participated in puppylove 2006, transforming a 3d white plastic puppy designed by eero aarnio in a fuschia-colored, curly-tailed gift of love that was sold at auction to raise funds for the university of miami’s sylvester comprehensive cancer research center. in 2008, citterio celebrated the magical properties of paper with luminaire, creating in-out,’ a simple yet eye-catching single piece of white paper with four neat columns of pyramids spread across the white page and five rows leading down. a simple concept, but intriguing enough to explore for hours. ‘in-out’ was auctioned to raise funds for cancer research during the exhibition paperlove.
2017 marks the 20th anniversary of antonio citterio’s iconic creation for b&b italia, the charles sofa. 20 years on from its debut, charles remains a reference model in the world of design worldwide.

during neocon week, luminaire will also unveil the newest lighting installation by the creative director of bocci, omer arbel. a cluster of sculptural lighting consisting of 61 pendants of bocci 87 series creating a matrix of stretched and folded glass and trapped air that give the piece a pearlescent optical quality. the bocci 87 was recently debuted at euroluce during milan design week. luminaire believes that design is a language, and as such has the power to transform lives. part of our fundamental value is to spread our passion for design through education, and we are honored to strengthen design awareness through Antonio Citterio’s creative process.
design miami/ 2016 will continue its dedication to offering an extensive program of special events, satellite projects, collaborations and commissions to complement the gallery exhibitions this year.
returning this year and continuing to explore the relationship between fashion and design are fendi and louis vuitton. fendi brings a decidedly conceptual, mobile interpretation of a vip room, the happy room, which references the italian brand’s heritage and workmanship. louis vuitton adds to its objets nomades collection with two striking new furniture pieces. airbnb will present sobremesa, a shared space inspired by the mexican tradition of lingering around a table after a meal, working with emerging mexico city-based design studio, pedro&juana. long-time collaborator audi presents the extra hour, by lego, inspired by the audi rs 7 piloted driving concept and focusing on the new kind of freedom and control over time and for the fifth year, maison perrier-jouët returns, this time working with andrew kudless and focusing on the notion of digital craftsmanship. compac, spain-based surface manufacturer collaborates with israeli designer arik levy on an installation inspired by frozen lakes, referencing features of quartz and marble.

this year part of curio, a design miami’s new exhibition platform, which invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. each curio reveals a total environment of objects, textures, artifacts and ideas that challenges and contextualizes familiar design narratives.
no sex in miami is the current episode of atelier biagetti’s exploration of contemporary life and goes deep into the human psyche to address the all-time greatest obsession: the idea of sex. first shown during milan design week 2016 curated by maria cristina didero, this time it is the ultimate environment for psychological confrontation, the therapist’s studio. the space itself contains all the expected elements, but the deceptively familiar surroundings are not innocently functional but rather tease the viewer, thus provoking new kinds of behavior around the perception of what sexy is, and around the idea of contemporary design.

friedman benda returns to design miami with asymmetrical symmetry, two parallel room settings featuring the work of eleven contemporary designers. contrasts, opposites and asymmetries will illustrate the rich diversity and backgrounds of designers spanning four continents and four generations, while calling attention to the breadth and depth of each individual designer’s practice.
one room, a juxtaposition of non-traditional materials in a frenzy of vibrant colors and textures, marks friedman benda’s first collaboration with american artist chris schanck.this setting will feature a monumental contemporary dining table and mirror, and a new series of armchairs in schanck’s signature alufoil technique and will preview his first solo exhibition at friedman benda in september 2017. misha kahn, fresh from a working trip to south africa, will present the first in a new series of cabinets produced in swaziland made with woven grass, trash, car parts, and sea glass. the inclusion of the campana brothers’ bi-level marquetry table along with a pair of pink pirarucu armchairs, complete the room.
the second setting is an exploration of volumes, with furniture and objects in natural materials and earthy tones. british designer faye toogood’s volumetric roly-poly dining chairs in silver nitrate bronze will preview her first solo exhibition with friedman benda, assemblage 5, opening february 23, 2017. these chairs will be paired with korean designer byung hoon choi’s minimalist sculptural dining table in light oak and stone. american design legend, wendell castle, now 84, will show the first in his exciting new block series of carved chairs ‘born’ of wood, referencing classical sculpture of the renaissance period, marcel wanders’ low embroidered leather odjurss äte murmur chairs will be juxtaposed with los angeles based artist adam silverman’s organic ceramic vessels. the setting will include lighting – the unveiling of chilean design studio gt2p’s new remolten lava table lamps made from lava excavated from chile’s villarrica volcano; a voluminous rice paper and bamboo floor lamp by the influential italian architect and designer andrea branzi, as well as british designer paul cocksedge’scapture, a hand-spun aluminum dome chandelier, which holds the glow of a warm white light, but with no visible source.
brooklyn-based calico wallpaper will unify the rooms, a second collaboration with the company’s founders. inspired by the concept of optical illusion, calico wallpaper will present a site-specific print of their aurora wallpaper with a custom pattern designed to play with the viewer’s perception and challenge one’s visual system.

evergreen brasil at luminaire lab – a celebration of diversity
an exhibition in collaboration with casa vogue brasil of multidisciplinary brazilian design debuting during art basel and design miami/ week
opening reception: thursday, 1 december at 6 pm / luminaire lab 3901 ne 2nd avenue
luminaire’s commitment to promoting good design continues with evergreen brasil, an exhibition of brazilian designs debuting during art basel and design miami/ week thursday december 1st and on display until december 31st in collaboration with casa vogue brasil. the exhibition features a curated selection of multidisciplinary design covering furniture, accessories and jewelry from both emerging and established designers. characterized by their welcoming attitude, special connection to nature, celebratory lifestyle, inventiveness even when materials are scarce, and tendency to experiment and improvise — brazilian design is a celebration of diversity.
showcasing the craft-based heritage that has given rise to a vibrant and expressive design identity in brazil, evergreen exhibits works by brazilian design master jorge zalszupin, design “veterans” such as fernando and humberto campana, claudia moreira salles and antonio bernardo, alongside established talents such as marcelo rosenbaum, marcio kogan, arthur casas and isay weinfeld as well as young emerging names that include ana neute, carol gay, pedro paulo venzon and guilherme wentz. fourteen creatives from different generations who are utilizing native materials and inspirations for historic or innovative expressions of cultural identity, showcasing traditional or experimental practices, which result in a clear artistic expression and a strong, vibrant spirit of brazil.
some highlights of the exhibition include the candy chandelier designed by fernando and humberto campana and created by the czech lighting company lasvit, that was inspired by the multi-hued candies found in brazilian markets. other highlights of the exhibition include a collection of baskets made by artisans from the northeast of brazil curated by marcelo rosenbaum, a rustic table and the first furniture piece ever designed by claudia moreira salles, jorge zalszupin´s iconic tea trolley and a wood necklace designed by antonio bernardo.
harnessing the richness of the brazilian culture, its vibrant resources, these designers create pieces that take inspiration from their surrounding and strive to improve their environment. although it is difficult to categorize design styles by their origin or country, there is one common link between all brazilian designers and that is their ability to always create and produce fresh and everlasting pieces with a special dose of respect to nature and its resources – truly evergreen.
evergreen brasil debuts on december 1 and continues through the month of december at luminaire lab in miami’s design district.
we are visiting italian bathroom fixtures specialist fantini in their new chicago showroom in the luxehome design resource center in chicago’s merchandise mart and speaking to riccardo conti, managing director / fantini north america. one’s first impression when looking at the products is striking sophistication and a leanness in form.
[designapplause] riccardo, welcome to chicago. please tell us what’s unique and special about fantini. [riccardo conti] first of all this year is special as we celebrate 70 years. i think over the last few decades fantini has been particularly successful because of consistency. for example, every time we introduce a new collection it’s always a collaboration with a designer, and though each designer brings their own personal vision to their solutions, everything is very much aligned with a style that tells you it’s a fantini product.
and that’s always been the case but recent introductions the company has become very aggressive to a change in mindset. we have entered a new phase that while preserving a fantini style of simplicity and elegance, we’ve have added a more transitional look.
[da] looking over your presentation in this showroom you are an exception to the rule. it’s very rare for a showroom to successfully mix and match iconic simplicity with iconic traditional. the two esthetics usually are served up as diametrically opposed —— and people normally like one or the other. fantini has managed to maintain simplicity while adding classic sumptuousness. [rc] yes, i certainly agree and thank you. the new vision goes together well with what is existing. our designs are never too loud, more quiet but very elegant with a good sense of proportion.
a good example is our fontane bianche collection designed by italian architect and interior stylist elisa ossino, a fusion of stone and water. in addition i’d like to say the collaboration with salvatori for the fontane bianche collection is not new to fantini because we have collaborated with others before, especially boffi which is ongoing. and coincidently, salvatori is also celebrating 70 years.
above/below> fontane bianche
the materials in this collection is more industrial with a sort of delicate touch. industrial elements are rough and unfinished surfaces. the idea behind the collaboration with salvatori was not to just introduce a line of faucets, but also include sinks and accessories that tie into one concept. maybe some clients would prefer just the faucets or just the sinks.
and this idea is precisely special and unique because today companies try to be include too many iterations together and lose some focus on being a specialist. we do have kitchen products but maybe we are not yet very strong. in fontane bianche, fantini remains a bathroom specialist.
another new introduction is a collaboration with belgium architect / designer vincent van duysen, who is also the creative director for moltini, to create icona which offers two distinct concepts, icona classic and icona deco which communicates two sentiments, one of timelessness and one of memory.
above> icona classic / below> icona deco
[da] a noticeable detail is a distinctive metallic-like matte finish. how did the matte concept appear? [rc] the finish is not new to us, it’s pvd (physical vapor deposition) treatment seen typically on jewelry, aerospace and biomedical applications and permits an unlimited range of color tones. pvd is more durable than chrome and aligns well within a bathroom environment. the new color palette comes in three options, matte gun metal, brushed copper and matte british gold. the finish permits an aged look but in fact it doesn’t age like real metal that tarnishes.
interestingly the use of color go way back to 70s and back then there were many colors. in recent years, black and white started trending although the trend never really took off. in addition to black and white, we added numerous other colors (all on custom request based on the “ral” range of colors) and it’s been quite successful, applied to the balocchi collection first and then extended to the whole range.
[da] what else is new? [rc] two new looks for us is lamé and venezia by italian designer matteo thun and spanish designer antonio rodriguez. lamé is an interesting shape and interesting to the touch, a square shape with rounded edges. it comes with a polished chrome finish with a unique and a choice of a contrasting matte black or white handle. a surprisingly well received new look are beautiful round crystal handles found in venezia which communicates style, tradition, elegance and refined luxury. venezia also has another classic lever handle in black or chrome plated metal.
above> lamé / below> venezia
[da] this finish looks like stainless steel. [rc] for many years we’ve done the brushed nickel finish. but we’ve discontinued that finish and we now use stainless steel 316 as it is marine grade and highly resistant to corrosion. it’s used a lot in outdoor applications, it’s recyclable and really eco-friendly because when you do brass/nickel finish there’s a lot of chemical processes you have to go through.
we now have four collections made entirely of stainless steel two of which are new in 2016. one designed by naoto fukasa is called aboutwater, a collaboration with boffi. aboutwater is the result of an exploration into the simplification of forms. the faucets and shower system become discs and cylinders; the taps look like the controls of a stereo. the design is so reduced the aesthetic quality of materials is emphasized.
above> aboutwater af21 / below> mint
another new stainless steel product is mint and designed by angeletti (silvana) & ruzza (daniele). mint is a first in the marketplace, a square faucet. why is it the first? the reason everyone stays away from this shape is the difficulty to execute in production. with circular shapes you work with materials already available on the market. this shape is completely custom.

below> designtex / moquette / 1032a
moquette is a textile mash-up that blends a classic velvet weaving technique with the creative possibilities offered by digital printing technology. the woven structure employs a “moquette” construction produced on a modern wire loom, allowing some areas to be woven as flat bands while elsewhere selected yarns are lifted and then cut to create a short, dense pile. beginning with a simple pattern of alternating horizontal stripes of varying widths, the moquette technique adds complexity by introducing a sense of dimensionality, which is enhanced by the luxurious combination of lustrous and matte yarns. finally, the raised, plush surfaces of the woven fabric are printed digitally with a non-repeating and random color pattern.
the result is an intricate layering of textures and colors that evokes natural landscapes, reflecting biologist e.o. wilson’s concept of biophilia—the theory that human beings are instinctively drawn to the natural world, and thus that design following this principle provides a heightened sensation of comfort and repose. below> parentesit freestanding / by lievore altherr molina for arper / 339
