evergreen brasil at luminaire lab – a celebration of diversity

an exhibition in collaboration with casa vogue brasil of multidisciplinary brazilian design debuting during art basel and design miami/ week
opening reception: thursday, 1 december at 6 pm / luminaire lab 3901 ne 2nd avenue

luminaire’s commitment to promoting good design continues with evergreen brasil, an exhibition of brazilian designs debuting during art basel and design miami/ week thursday december 1st and on display until december 31st in collaboration with casa vogue brasil. the exhibition features a curated selection of multidisciplinary design covering furniture, accessories and jewelry from both emerging and established designers. characterized by their welcoming attitude, special connection to nature, celebratory lifestyle, inventiveness even when materials are scarce, and tendency to experiment and improvise — brazilian design is a celebration of diversity.

showcasing the craft-based heritage that has given rise to a vibrant and expressive design identity in brazil, evergreen exhibits works by brazilian design master jorge zalszupin, design “veterans” such as fernando and humberto campana, claudia moreira salles and antonio bernardo, alongside established talents such as marcelo rosenbaum, marcio kogan, arthur casas and isay weinfeld as well as young emerging names that include ana neute, carol gay, pedro paulo venzon and guilherme wentz. fourteen creatives from different generations who are utilizing native materials and inspirations for historic or innovative expressions of cultural identity, showcasing traditional or experimental practices, which result in a clear artistic expression and a strong, vibrant spirit of brazil.

some highlights of the exhibition include the candy chandelier designed by fernando and humberto campana and created by the czech lighting company lasvit, that was inspired by the multi-hued candies found in brazilian markets. other highlights of the exhibition include a collection of baskets made by artisans from the northeast of brazil curated by marcelo rosenbaum, a rustic table and the first furniture piece ever designed by claudia moreira salles, jorge zalszupin´s iconic tea trolley and a wood necklace designed by antonio bernardo.

harnessing the richness of the brazilian culture, its vibrant resources, these designers create pieces that take inspiration from their surrounding and strive to improve their environment. although it is difficult to categorize design styles by their origin or country, there is one common link between all brazilian designers and that is their ability to always create and produce fresh and everlasting pieces with a special dose of respect to nature and its resources – truly evergreen.

evergreen brasil debuts on december 1 and continues through the month of december at luminaire lab in miami’s design district.

>> american design company wolf-gordon introduces level / will be previewed in spazio rossana orlandi – space g5 / via matteo bandello 14/16

a collection of eight interior surfacing products created in collaboration with amsterdam-based textile designer, mae engelgeer. the collection, comprising four upholstery, one drapery textile, and three digital print wallcoverings,

mdw16-wolf-gordon-level-mae1

wolf-gordon collaborated closely with engelgeer to design a cohesive collection characterized by repetitive geometries of varying scales. engelgeer’s graphic elements and diverse explorations of texture evoke the craftsmanship and authenticity of dutch modernism. engelgeer draws heavily on her knowledge of traditional weaving techniques, interpreting them through a 21st century lens. the resulting collection is a series of patterns that celebrate dynamic equilibrium—asymmetrical yet balanced—clean lines, abstract geometric forms, rich textures, and simple, sophisticated detailing. the palette for level includes a broad range of elegant neutrals and muted hues, many incorporating accents of metallic threads.

mae engelgeer: perhaps because of my background in fashion, i always tend to think in terms of a collection in my design process. the challenge of finding a color combination or a graphic element that can be used in different ways across a collection is very rewarding. the result is a cohesive, contemporary collection that combines sleek, urban 21st century design with a sense of craftsmanship and authenticity.

cappellini cassina poltrona frau. milan design week 2016 preview.

Mar 21, 2016

the poltrona frau group introduces four of their 2016 salone del mobile offerings:

above> embroidery chair | johan lindsten | cappellini | 2016
the four seasons are the characters of embroidery chair series by johan lindsten. expressing the encounter between the embroidery tradition passed down through generations and next-generation industrial technology, these four chairs with ash wood body and backrests with cross-stitch embroidery on tapestry wool depict painterly landscape scenes drawn from the essence of the four seasons. colors change together with seasons from the ash stained walnut shell of autumn to the white ash of spring, from the black stained ash of winter to the red stained ash of summer.

below>
orla plus | jasper morrison | cappellini | 2016

orla plus collection by jasper morrison is the tale of the development and evolution of orla project. the asymmetry theme combined with smooth lines is the leitmotif of this collection that consists of sofas in either two- or three-seater models, an armchair and a swivel chair. fixed cover for the base and removable covers for the cushions are available in all fabrics and leathers of the collection. the pillows are removable and have polyurethane foam padding.
mdw16-Cappellini_OrlaPlus_Morrison-1

below> utrecht chair | gerrit t. rietveld | 1935 // boxblocks | bertjan pot | cassina | 2016
the artist bertjan pot has designed an exclusive bespoke textile in three jacquard versions for the utrecht armchair giving a contemporary twist to this icon by gerrit t. rietveld. the architecture of the armchair is reflected in the innovative workmanship of the boxblocks fabric which is made up of 8 colored threads mixed 2 at a time to create 19 different colors on a template which outlines the shape of the armchair. carried out with an advanced computer controlled jacquard weaving machine. the result is a unique and perfectly balanced geometric pattern in which the combination of triangles is never repeated. a homage to dutch creativity, each unique boxblocks version fits 90 limited edition pieces like a tailor-made dress, for a total of 270 models, which are progressively numbered to guarantee the cassina mark of authenticity. the utrecht armchair was designed in 1935 and has been exclusively produced by cassina since 1988.

“my concepts are never single lined or step by step but they are always a meeting point of different ideas and feelings.
for the boxblocks textile of the utrecht it was important for me to do something today that was not technically possible at the time of the armchair’s creation.
the pattern is inspired by the modernist ‘block-sculptural’ shape of the chair itself. when talking patterns there are generally two types, one is the pattern that respects the product and enhances its shape (think traditional tartan checks and stripes), the other is the pattern that crosses seams and dazzles its actual shape (think zebra stripes and large organic flower prints)… this one does both.”
bertjan pot.

mdw16-CASSINA_BertjanPot1

below> lloyd | jean-marie massaud | poltrona frau | 2016
jean-marie massaud designs lloyd, a system of storage units and bookcases with variable geometries. thin vertical wooden rods create light grilles that run from top to bottom on invisible horizontal rails. each grille can be moved as desired to create sequences that are different each time. a fluctuating score of solids and voids, of light and shade. a sensual game that offers a glimpse of the contents, books and objects, without fully revealing them.

the most advanced technology is combined with traditional materials, wood and saddle leather, to form a solid and minimalist structure. the effect is almost intangible, transparent. the horizontal elements on which the grilles slide are made from hpl, a material which even in very thin layers guarantees stability and strength, with a natural oak veneer. the vertical uprights, in mdf covered with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather, are placed at regular intervals to give the piece of furniture rhythm and enhance the liberating effect of the grilles.

each individual grille is a painstaking piece of cabinetwork. the solid oak rods are cut in different thicknesses and then individually glued by hand. given the very reduced surfaces of the rods, the lead-colored dye is also applied by hand in several phases.

there is an infinite number of possible compositions. in the wall version the base is closed by mdf panels covered, like the uprights, with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather. in the freestanding version, the mobile grilles run along both sides for an even more vibrant and chiaroscuro effect. in all variants the sides of the structure are closed by fixed grilles.

the lloyd can take the form of large bookcases or open storage units of various sizes. widths range from 225 to 280 cm, heights from 46 to 188 cm and its depth is 42.5 cm. the composition can rest on lead-colored solid oak stands or sit directly on the floor on steel feet with matt gunmetal grey finish.

Nov 5, 2015

diffa15-with-care3Specify With Care®, DIFFA’s cause marketing program, invites companies to designate a collection or collections and donate a percentage from sales of those to the Foundation.

DIFFA is making its mark on the tradeshow circuit this fall, bringing its Specify With Care® cause-related marketing program to BDNY in NYC 8>9 November / Booth #178. Specify With Care (SWC) invites companies to donate a percentage of sales from designated collections to benefit DIFFA in its fight against HIV/AIDS.

Many of the program’s affiliate products will be displayed in DIFFA’s booth at the shows.
Current participating affiliates include Blanco, Bolon, Ege, Maya Romanoff, Laufen and Wolf-Gordon // Gift of Hope.

“Specify With Care is a win-win proposition,” said Rick Wolf, CEO of Wolf-Gordon. It associates manufacturers’ names with a good cause and effectively differentiates their products. The interior design and architectural communities are supporting Specify With Care with overwhelming enthusiasm and optimism.”

As the program grows, DIFFA plans to exhibit at numerous other tradeshows throughout the year and support participants through a number of strategic activities and marketing and PR efforts.

2015 clerkenwell design week round-up.

2015 clerkenwell design week round-up.

Jun 5, 2015

Clerkenwell Design Week is one of my favorite festivals. It’s small enough to get around in a day (although increasingly, I’m there for all three!), the sun (almost!) always shines, and it has a real ‘festival’ vibe with showroom parties spilling out onto the streets, interesting installations, and of course, ice-cream!

cdw15_Glaze1

My favorite installations this year: Glaze by Cousins & Cousins in collaboration with Gx Glass – an interactive space made of candy-colored glass panels;

CDW15-Invisible_Store_of_Happiness1

…the Invisible Store of Happiness by Sebastian Cox and Laura Ellen Bacon in collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council;

CDW15-2015-05-19-1

…the Johnson tiles transformation of the entrance to the Farmiloe Building created by Verve – an installation of colored and mirrored tiles, arranged so that you saw all the colors of the rainbow looking one way, and your own reflection looking the other;

CDW15-IMG_3348-1

…and Agora on the Green – a collaboration between Scandinavian Business Seating, Article 25 and Russ & Henshaw, which invited passers by to take a seat, add to its design, and even raising money for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

CDW15-EK_Anglepoise1

The main hub of the festival is the Design factory at the Farmiloe Building, and this is where the more established brands can be found. Anglepoise launched three new editions of the Original 1227 desk lamp by London-based surface pattern designers Eley Kishimoto.

CDW15-2015-05-20-1

I loved &Then Design’s limited edition Flora in copper – designed in collaboration with Scarlett San Martin.

CDW15-2015-05-20-2

Sean Dare of Dare Studio was launching this fabulous pink sofa – I love the gold legs: a grown-up take on a feminine 1970s-inspired corner sofa.

CDW15-2015-05-20-3

Husband and wife team Baines & Fricker were showing their SB01 and BF02 collections. The latter is their colorful take on a pew – although I think it might raise a few eyebrows in church!

CDW15-2015-05-20-8

I loved this tailoring detail on Cornish furniture manufacturer Mark’s Fold Sofa.

CDW15-2015-05-19-3

Next I moved on to Platform, Clerkenwell Design Week’s space for up-and-coming designers – in the spooky subterranean setting of a Victorian former prison. I loved this little orange-legged stool by Amy Whitworth.

CDW152015-05-19-4

The Naive chair by etc.etc. has been stripped down to the bare minimum, with none of the fun removed – each piece comes in a range of bright colors that can be mixed and matched. This all-yellow version is perfect for me.

CDW15-2015-05-19-5

There is a real trend about at the moment for embracing the imperfections of natural materials, such as ‘waney edges,’ – the wobbly outside section of wood that goes right up to the bark, which is normally trimmed off to create consistent straight planks. What I love about Richard Hardy‘s collection is the way it combines this sustainable approach with a sense of fun.

CDW15-2015-05-19-6

Ambrose Vevers’ furniture is all hand-made in the South-West of England – he even fells the trees himself.

CDW15-2015-05-19-7

Additions is the space for small home accessories at the Crypt on the Green, the brick-walled crypt underneath Clerkenwell’s St James’ Church. I spotted Gemma Kay Waggett‘s quilted textiles almost as soon as I walked into Additions and was immediately drawn by their complex patterns and understated palettes.

CDW15-2015-05-19-8

I am a big fan of Billy Lloyd‘s ceramics. This collection of mugs was being shown as part of a curation by Charlotte Abrahams called This Is Craft.

CDW15-2015-05-19-2

This is the debut collection from N and N Wares and I’m already a huge fan. This one stopped me in my tracks – just beautiful.

2015-05-19-9

I love Matt Pugh’s little wooden birds, so was interested to see more of his work. These candlestick holders come in a set of five and I think they work just as well without a candle – as abstract forms adding a pop of color to your interior scheme.

CDW152015-05-19-9

Alicja Patanowska hand-throws ceramic forms to turn discarded glassware (which she collects on the streets of London in the early hours of the morning!) into functional plant-pots, in which you can see both roots and stem.

CDW15-2015-05-19-10

And last but not least, Homeware and paper goods brand Hjem (Home in Danish), is based in the French Alps and run by Emma Richmond – it launched in October 2014 and this was Emma’s debut show, so it was really exciting to see her work. I’m looking forward to seeing more from her at the London Design Festival in September.
