entering the second golden age of design.

Jul 15, 2016

few designers strive, succeed to be relevant for decades in the competitive, cut-throat commercial markets of design. even fewer elevate their craft to be accepted in permanent collections of important design museums – and then there is marcel wanders who managed to piss of his teachers and design critics yet wowed design store impresarios, developers and more recently museum curators.

after showing at the prestigious stedeljijk museum, amsterdam in 2014, his work is now at the centre pompidou, in paris.

looks like the borders that, oh so arrogantly, used to separate design from architecture and art are dissolving in front of our very eyes.

spazio rossana orlandi. milan design week 2016.

Apr 29, 2016

the doyenne of design gathers talent new and established in her eponymous spazio rossana orlandi.

spazio rossana orlandi, a former tie factory on via matteo bandello in the magenta neighborhood of milan, is part design-shop, part gallery, part sun-dappled courtyard café, curated by the eponymous doyenne of design. orlandi is known, not only for her trademark specs (pictured above and now available to buy in the shop), but for her ability to spot the stars of the future at the very beginning of their careers. every year for milan design week, the space is filled with a combination of new talent and the big names she’s supported from day one, making it a must-see destination.

below> this sculptural piece showing the transition from tree to wooden designed object is by desiree mejer, part of design collective von pelt. the collective celebrates its members’ varied talents and provenance, saying, “most are self taught or come from a different discipline and location, such as graphic design and poetry from london and spain, artist sculptors from berlin, and italian textile researchers and craftsmen.” mejer was born in spain, now lives in london and is a fashion designer by trade, having launched fake london in 1997.

below> dutch designer floris wubben has been turning ceramic techniques on their heads since his extrusion machine made ceramic vases by forcing clay through templates like play-doh. his latest collection involves removing layers of glaze with a blowtorch between firings.

some of his experimental extruded pots have now made it into production and are available for sale in the rossana orlandi shop.

below> light in time was a stunning installation by moritz waldemeyer for sports watchmaker panera. “the creation of the artist comes to life through an interplay of light and material,” said a statement from the brand, and the sun-lit location proved them right. the iridescent petrol-lie color turned out to be one of the key color trends in milan.

umzikim and kyuhyung cho designed the robbot shelf in response to their concerns about the future – limited natural resources and the impact of artificial intelligence. “however, no matter what comes our way, we’ll never give up on creating breathtaking moments, because our aesthetic capabilities and imaginations are what make us human,” they say. the robbot shelf enables users to create their own combination of modular components to make something that meets their needs and reflects their personalities.

below> the handmade atacama vase by josefina munoz and peter fink was part of an exhibition entitled i dream of luxury curated by nov gallery after an open call to emerging swiss designers to interpret the concept of luxury for the future. munoz and fink encapsulated their collection in the phrase: “i dream of perfect flaws.”

mdw16-Rossana_Orlandi_07

mdw16-Rossana_Orlandi_08

another piece in the same exhibition was volutes, a fragrance dispenser made of ratten, brass and glass by anouk eva-meyer. “i dream of scent as a memory” was the phrase given by the designer to explain her work. ratten and brass were also two key materials seen right across milan design week this year.

below> jacks-up by sungjun kim is a stool made entirely of turned poplar wood legs, inspired by the collective effort it took to raise the briggs hotel in downtown chicago in 1866. that year was the starting point for all the pieces in an exhibition by the school of the art institute of chicago (saic)’s whatnot studio, to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary.

mdw16-Rossana_Orlandi_09

below> other pieces in the exhibition included the oil lamp with light diffuser by ali keshmiri – an oil lamp designed to focus attention on the flame; and allele by shau heng li – a stapled plywood table (staples and plywood were both commercialized in 1866), inspired by mendel’s law in which functional elements mutate into decorative abnormalities.

mdw16-Rossana_Orlandi_10

mdw16-Rossana_Orlandi_11
finally, we spotted lee broom’s salone del automobile parked up outside – a stroke of genius by the british designer, the van moved from location to location throughout milan design week bringing design to the people.

design episodes: the modern chair / the art institute of chicago
thru 11 september 2016

introducing the first episode of this series of installations are co-curators alison fisher and karen kice. the modern chair focuses on a piece of furniture that has captivated the popular imagination like no other. beginning in the machine age with the promise of industrial production, chair design took off in new directions dynamically engaged with contemporary forms. furniture design moved out of the realms of the carpenter and the decorator as architects and industrial designers took on the chair as a problem of engineering, materials research, and the scientific study of the human body. with this new attitude, one of the most important drivers of modern chair design became new materials—from tubular steel in 1920s europe to the later largely american development of plywood and fiberglass chairs. this exhibition presents iconic examples from throughout the 20th century by makers including le corbusier and charlotte perriand, harry bertoia, and charles and ray eames, all of whose work contributed to the evolution of a new, modern ideal.

in the fall of 2017, the art institute of chicago will debut the museum’s first permanent installation dedicated to 20th- and 21st-century architecture and design. in the months leading up to this major display on the second floor of the modern wing, the space will feature a series of three mini-exhibitions showcasing different aspects of the museum’s design holdings—from an exploration of the modern chair to a look at different expressions of postmodernism to a celebration of typography in graphic design. tying the three installments together is an installation design by amir berbic for the galleries and the windows facing onto griffin court.

the exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the architecture & design society and john h. and neville bryan.

for those who merge salone del mobile offerings and go shopping for next year’s accommodations, this excursion looks rewarding. beirut based carwan gallery curates a new installation from the design studio oevffice at hotel senato milano, unveiling their new edition of kapital tables, a special collection of nine unique exemplars each slightly different in shape and all handmade in italy from solid white carrara marble.

oevffice proposes an installation celebrating the concept of classical architecture ruins. the installation is a further development of the kapital collection designed in 2015, a series of limited edition tables and stools based on essential forms, reminiscent of primordial stone capitals and simple geometric assemblages commonly found in classical architecture.

the collaboration with hotel senato highlights the will of this beautiful residency in donating an experience linked to design and architecture. following the magistral work of the architect alessandro bianchi, the hotel aims to be a new address in milan to complement the city’s stylish downtown. a space that exudes creativity, rigor and a unique character.

with this exhibition, nendo abstracts archetypes of manga  comics.  the  chairs  are  happy,  distressed,  embarrassed, surprised; they leap and bound, zoom past, or slowly slink away. each chair has its own personality, allowing it to stand on its own or, when placed next to the others, to become part of a collective narrative. a different configuration creates a different story; the chairs come alive in a symphonious display of nendo’s playful japanese design.

50_manga_chairs38_kenichi_sonehara

50  manga chairs is friedman benda’s third solo show with nendo and th  japanese design group’s most ambitious body of work to date. the group’s 2009 new york debut ghost stories featured the acclaimed cabbage  chair, which was initially shown in the groundbreaking exhibition xxist century man at 21_21  design site in tokyo. nendo’s 2011 exhibition scatter shelf toyed with optical illusions and repetitive forms, the idea of structure in space.

[ nendo ] founded  in  tokyo  in  2002,  with  a  second  office  established  in  milan  in  2005,  has received  many  distinctions, including the iconic design award ‘interior designer of the year’ in 2015, wallpaper* magazine’s ‘designer of the year’ in 2012, and the ‘red dot design award’ in germany in 2008. in 2011, nendo presented visible  structures,  a  solo  commission  for  the high museum of art, atlanta, visible  structures was also  included in modern by design, a collaborative exhibition between the high museum of art and the museum of modern art, new york.

as the market for collectible design continues to evolve and mature with each edition, design miami/ celebrates the full diversity of its field. with the 11th edition of design miami/ this december, the fair offers extraordinary works from galleries based on five continents that specialize in everything from classic early twentieth century design to the conceptual cutting edge. work ranging from full-sized architectural elements to the most delicate jewelry, by designers from as far afield as the philippines and japan, south africa and brazil, will be on show under one roof at the global forum for design.

[ unbuilt ] a key installation to the event now held in the design miami/ tent across the street from art basel is the annual commission of an entry installation. previous years include architects david adjaye and snarkitecture, and most recently designer in 2014, jonathan muecke.

for the 11th edition in 2015, design miami/ has awarded a harvard graduate school of design student team the entry-pavilion commission. the chosen design, titled unbuilt, was selected last may through a gsd-wide competition that drew 32 teams comprising 100 gsd students.

this collaboration marks the first time that the design miami/ pavilion will be designed by a student group. the completed pavilion will stand at the entrance of the fair for its duration from 2 > 6 december, serving as both a beacon for the show and a place to welcome its tens of thousands of visitors.

“it is a privilege to partner with harvard gsd, one of the most amazing sources of creative thinking in the world of design,” says craig robins, design miami’s founder. “we are excited to see the students’ vision realized at design miami—a platform that has always been committed to presenting the work of emerging talent alongside material by established and historic designers.”

the unbuilt team comprises joanne cheung, jenny shen, steven meyer, doug harsevoort, and yiliu shen-burke (all march ’18). the team is advised by luis callejas, lecturer in architecture and landscape architecture; hanif kara, professor in practice of architectural technology; and dan borelli (mdes ’12), director of exhibitions.

the success of [ the salon ] lies in the quality of the 55 exhibiting galleries, the extremely international flavor of the material, and this eclecticism that is highly sought by today’s collectors and influencers. up until expo chicago this past september, the salon could claim other fairs allow art, but no design or conversely design without art. the organizers’ willingness to consider all material—historic to contemporary—is predicated on the belief that today’s designers and collectors insist on a vibrant mix—as long as the quality is impeccable.
