be original americas awarded fast company’s 10 most innovative companies in design.

Feb 12, 2015

Fast Company today announced its annual ranking of the world’s 10 Most Innovative Companies in Design for 2015, honoring leading enterprises and rising newcomers that exemplify the best in business and design. Be Original Americas was named on the list along with Charter Member Herman Miller and 30 Weeks, Ammunition Group, Code and Theory, Gumroad, Ikea, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Beyers, Michael Graves Architecture & Design and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. This honor was passed along to the more than 60 media sponsors, VIPs and Be Original Americas’ members attending the first Annual Members Meeting, held at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum on February 5th 2015.

Most Innovative Companies is one of Fast Company’s most significant and highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. The magazine’s editors spend months gathering and analyzing data on companies around the globe.

In response to the recognition, Antoine Roset, President, Be Original Americas (and Executive Vice President, Roset USA Corporation) noted, “Being part of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Design is great recognition for Be Original Americas. Innovation is what drives our industry, and Be Original Americas is there to share all of the values that make an original product a better product; even a safer product. This acknowledgement represents one more step against copies and knockoffs, as we continue and intensify our mission of informing, educating and influencing individuals and organizations on why supporting authentic design is critical for our economy, our environment and our ethics as a society. If we don’t value and protect authentic design, what is design’s future?”

[ Be Original Americas ] is committed to initiating discussion on the importance and value of preserving original design across the Americas, through informational, educational and influential marketing initiatives and other efforts to promote this critical issue.

Be Original charter members – including Alessi, Artek, Bernhardt Design, Emeco, Flos, Fritz Hansen, Herman Miller®, Ligne Roset, Poltrona Frau Group and Vitra – believe that the value of authenticity cannot be underestimated or taken for granted in the marketplace. Through an aggressive program of lectures, workshops and round-tables, the movement campaigns to establish a set of industry standards that encourages public and professionals, along with our media partners, to fully support creativity and authenticity, to invest in the future of design, to incentivize innovation, and to give back to the industry and the people it serves.

a chocolate lounge by nendo for maison & objet 2015.

Jan 23, 2015

this year’s designer of the year title for maison & objet 2015 went to japanese designer oki sato and founder of studio nendo. nendo was asked to design ‘the chocolate lounge’ for the paris trade fair. the studio also created a range of nine chocolate shapes within a 26-millimetre cube. designapplause talks to oki.
[designapplause] oki, the solution is both flat out unadulterated and inspiring as usual. how did the chocolate factory turn out for you?

[ oki sato ] maison awarded us best designer of the year and gave us a space and asked us to create something. that was in november and you know how, we’re very happy for the recognition and what are we now going to do. we thought of the idea of not only touching and feeling the design but actually eating it. hence the concept of using all five senses. the flavor of the chocolate is all the same but interestingly the tastes are different due to the different shapes and textures. we also added the concept of the lounge and we called guilio cappellini, desalto and morosso, companies who have commissioned us and they created limited chocolate colored editions of our design, a soft form like a meltable form. maybe we put a little pressure on them too. then we hand-painted aluminum pipes and cut them to different heights so it feels like you’re sitting in this melting pot of chocolate.

[da] so these 11th hour deadlines work. oki what’s next?
[os] yes, in some cases they do (laughing). and ron, maybe we’ll talk to you in chicago in june at neocon for some new things to talk about.

the chocolates have been named after various japanese expressions
1> ‘tubu-tubu’ – comprised of small chocolate drops.
2> ‘sube-sube’ – with smooth edges and rounded corners.
3> ‘zara-zara’ – rough and granular like a file.
4> ‘toge-toge’ – projecting sharp pointed tips.
5> ‘goro-goro’ – a composition of fourteen connected small cubes.
6> ‘fuwa-fuwa’ – soft and airy with the presence of many tiny holes.
7> ‘poki-poki’ – a cube frame made of chocolate sticks.
8> ‘suka-suka’ – a hollow cube with thin walls.
9> ‘zaku-zaku’ – featuring alternately placed thin chocolate rods forming a cube.

mo15-nendo-chocolate13

the space is furnished with nendo’s previous seat designs for brands including cappellini, desalto, emeco, glas italia, moroso and offecct. these chairs are custom-colored to match the chocolates and surrounded by 2,000 aluminum 8mm thick pipes painted in brown gradations to form ‘a rippling large molten chocolate wave’. a limited edition of 400 boxes were on sale at the lounge.

previous recipient’s of maison & object’s designer of the year award have included barber and osgerby, the campana brothers and tom dixon. installation images courtesy of nendo with photography by joakim blockstrom – packaging photos by akihiro yoshida.

[ official release ] For the third year in a row,Hyundai’s innovative and unique design language has earned a GOOD DESIGN™ Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe was awarded this accolade in the transportation category for its dynamic character lines and bold design features.

Now in its 64th year, GOOD DESIGN Awards honor the yearly achievements of the best industrial and graphic designers and world manufactures for their pursuit of extraordinary design excellence. GOOD DESIGN is the oldest and the most prestigious architecture and design Awards Program organized worldwide, and strives to create a revived awareness about contemporary design and to honor both products and industry leaders in design and manufacturing that have chartered new directions and pushed the envelope for competitive products in the world marketplace.

For 2013, the GOOD DESIGN Awards were judged in Chicago by an international jury of design professionals, architects, experts and cultural leaders. The jury honored more than 700 product designs and graphics from over 38 nations with GOOD DESIGN Awards.

“Hyundai prides itself on pushing the envelope in regards to style and design,” said Chris Chapman, chief designer, Hyundai Design Center. “With the 2013 Santa Fe, we wanted the vehicle to be a functional, mobile sculpture and receiving the 2013 GOOD DESIGN Award for transportation acknowledges this design achievement.”

The all-new Santa Fe adopts its own design concept called “Storm Edge,” which captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm. Featuring sophisticated and refined lines, which are in harmony with its bold and voluminous surfaces, the Santa Fe presents a more masculine appearance that its predecessor.

bullitt2

World Architecture News announced that Seattle’s new Bullitt Center designed by The Miller Hull Partnership is the 2013 Sustainable Building of the Year, the greenest building in the world. The 50,000 sq-ft building is the first leasable market rate commercial structure that meets the targets of the Living Building Challenge to the Net Zero Energy standard, including adhering to the omission of all toxic chemicals that appear on the prohibited ‘red list’ and also ensuring ‘one hundred percent of the project’s energy needs must be supplied by on-site renewable energy on a net annual basis’. A little surprising that 575 solar panels are featured in a Seattle building but the panels are just one of many sustainable concepts.

bullitt7

The design concept caters and relies to a great extent on function and the makeup of the tenants. For example, no automobile (but a bicycle) parking garage to encourage mass transit commutes. The elevator is practically hidden and an ‘irresistible’ stairwell is an obvious and healthier option. There is the reduced plug load environment also a little interesting.

bullitt3

Wood, steel, and concrete are the three main exposed fundamental materials that make up the foundation of the building and can be seen throughout. Equally visible is the array of retractable exterior blinds. The structure is built to sustain itself for 250 years.

bullitt10

Net Zero Energy Features
Energy efficiency 83% greater than a typical Seattle office building
Predicted EUI rating of 16kbtu/sf/yr
242kW photovoltaic array
Ground source geothermal heat exchange system
Radiant floor heating and cooling system
Retractable external blinds to block heat before it warms the building
Reduced plug loads
Net Zero Water
Water efficiency 80% greater than a typical Seattle office building
56,000 gallon rainwater collection cistern
Greywater reclamation
Composting foam flush toilets (save 96% more water than traditional flush toilets)
Rainwater filtration for potable uses
Green roof and constructed wetland

[ living building challenge ]
A collection of environmentalist groups came together to develop the Living Building Challenge to motivate contractors around the nation and world to build green buildings. The challenge lays out a set of guidelines that are to be followed during the building process. The idea is to eliminate as many harmful substances to the environment as possible. The Living Building Challenge consists of seven performance areas—site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty—that are subdivided into 20 “imperatives.”

Plagiarius competition 2014 deadline reminder.

Nov 12, 2013

Plagiarius_Zwerg_72_dpi1the coveted plagiarius trophy

A reminder that the Plagiarius Competition 2014 registration deadline is 30 November 2013. This competition presents a negative award to companies that create fakes and plagiarisms. To date, pretty sure no evidence that the knockoff has looked better than original in 38 years, since the founding of this award.

plagiarius13-qatar12013 grand prize winner

[ official release ]
Dear entrepreneurs and creatives,

Business with fakes and plagiarisms is booming. Globalisation, the internet and gullible bargain hunters allow the counterfeiters world-wide sales and multi-billion gains. The damages on part of the original producers are immense, just as much as the serious risks for the consumers.

Please send a signal that you do not accept counterfeits, but rather fight them. We support you: With our negative award “Plagiarius” we facilitate the deterrence of the imitators (supply) and the sensitisation of the consumers (demand). However, in this context, we need your examples – consumer and industrial goods likewise.

The Plagiarius-Competition is announced for the 38th time. Action Plagiarius grants this negative award at the annual “Ambiente”, the world’s largest consumer goods trade fair, during an international press conference. The award is given to those manufacturers and distributors whom the jury has found guilty of making or selling “the most flagrant” (design) imitations.

The aim of Plagiarius is to inform the public – industry, politicians and consumers alike – about the sweeping extent of the damages and dangers incurred by fakes and plagiarisms. Furthermore Plagiarius is a great conduit for industry to shed light on this problem on an international basis.

The huge public awareness level of “Plagiarius” often makes a strong impact. In the past, numerous imitators have withdrawn remainders of stock from the market, have signed cease and desist letters or revealed their suppliers.

Designers and companies affected by plagiarisms are invited to apply for the Plagiarius Competition 2014.

For the evaluation the jury needs:
– The original product
– The alleged plagiarism
– The filled in registration form (can be filled in directly at the PC)
– Any correspondence with the imitator
– Copies of IPR Intellectual Property Registrations, if any registered
– If needed, any further information that may be helpful for the jury (short and precise !)

On February 07, 2014 – the first day of the “Ambiente” International Consumer Goods Trade Fair – the award ceremony / press conference of “Plagiarius 2014” will take place. All entries will be shown from February 07-11, 2014 in Foyer 5.1 / 6.1 during the “Ambiente”. Afterwards the prize winners will be shown in the Museum Plagiarius in Solingen (Germany) and at changing world-wide exhibitions.

Registration fee:
1> registration: EUR 300,00 – further registrations (each): EUR 150,00

Architect alejandro barrios-carrero wins 2013 james beard for juvia.

May 9, 2013

alejandro-beard2juvia inside | click > enlarge

Last December at Design Miami, DesignApplause had the pleasure of interviewing Venezuelan architect Alejandro Barrios-Carrero, along with the good fortune of dining at the inventive restaurant he designed, Juvia. This is a story about an accomplished and talented young architect making the smartest use of today’s tools, materials and a plum venue, the now iconic 1111 Lincoln Road parking facility designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

alejandro-beard51111 lincoln road

The building itself looks a bit unfinished because it looked too good while under construction to clad.

alejandro-beard6

In this setting, rather on top of this setting, Alejandro uses everything in his toolbox to take advantage of his good fortune: Not only the building but he inherits the penthouse and a terrace.

alejandro-beard1

With the penthouse he uses wide mullions to bring the outside to the inside.

alejandro-beard7
alejandro-beard3

This is South Florida and the architect from Venezuela knows what he needs to do with a soil-less garden wall, a water feature, and a retractable roof.

alejandro-beard9

It comes with little surprise that Alejandro wins a 2013 James Beard Foundation Award For Outstanding Restaurant Design For Juvia (Miami’s penthouse destination for fusion fare takes 76-Seat and over category). Bravo!

[ release ]
The 10,000 square foot indoor/outdoor restaurant, owned by Jonas and Alexandria Millan, and located on the penthouse level of 1111 Lincoln Road features an innovative trackless, retractable roof, a 22-foot high vertical plant wall by acclaimed French botanist Patrick Blanc and furniture and lighting by Patricia Urquiola, Piero Lissoni and Thomas Patterson. The space boasts a panoramic view of downtown Miami, unparalleled by any venue in the city.

“In my opinion, Juvia is what the New Miami should be like,” says designer Alejandro Barrios-Carrero. “It’s much more than art deco for me; I do love it, but I think Miami has much more to offer. The restaurant is part of an equation consisting of architecture, nature, and great food, resulting in a special experience.”

Architecturally inventive, Barrios-Carrero installed a trackless, retractable roof that acts as an umbrella and accommodates terrace dining year-round. A celestial water fountain with wrap-around sofas, situated at the center of the terrace, provides seating and further enhances the atmosphere. The indoor dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows features limestone tabletops and a communal table, made of petrified wood, are accented with organic, hand-woven chairs designed by Patricia Urquiola.

Named after the indigenous Brazilian nut tree, Juvia’s design incorporates elements of nature, creating a magical juxtaposition between the massive concrete structure and a tropical jungle oasis with a subtle integration of organic shapes, colors and materials.
