Be Original Americas to host a dynamic panel at WantedDesign on Saturday 16 May 2015 at 2:30p, about authentic design online. The event is titled Authentic Design Online – Be Original Americas. With more and more consumers shopping from a device rather than a brick-and-mortar location, the panel will share their thoughts on how can the design community assert and promote quality through intangible channels? How can the notion of “good design” transcend the static interface of a computer screen or smart phone?

Join Dwell editor in chief and panel moderator Amanda Dameron in conversation with Bezar founder Bradford Shellhammer, Emeco chairman Gregg Buchbinder, and author and design commentator Max Fraser about the ever-shifting online marketplace.

Be Original Americas, founded in 2012, is committed to educating, informing and influencing designers, businesses, and the greater public on the value of purchasing authentic designs. The goal is to elevate the discussion so that all who appreciate good design also understand the economic, social, and ethical reasons to support the creators and manufacturers of original, authorized design, thereby ensuring its future.

NY design week—icff2012: um project's playful lamps at wanted design.

May 31, 2012

Craft System, the new lighting collection by François Chambard of UM Project, might just be the most imaginative interpretation of a lamp I’ve ever seen. When all the lamps are lined up side by side they look more like characters from a children’s story – think Wall-E’s progeny – than even the most inventive lighting on view at WantedDesign during NY Design Week. François describes the collection as one basic form with multiple variations. The most basic variation in the system, the Atum Lamp, has a Corian base in black, grey or white with a shade of either a fabric mesh or powder coated satin brass. There are two options for the light source, either an LED grid or four small incandescent light bulbs (both are operated with a built-in dimmer switch), and you can choose the table top variety or make it into a floor lamp with a wooden ash base.

But the similarities end there. The other variations François has come up with turn the basic lamp into a clever and playful lighting device with a prominent second function, like growing a plant or playing the theremin, that strange, UFO-sounding electronic rod instrument. Some other variations have a packed grid of tiny light bulbs or a brightly colored shade. The variations are only as limited as your imagination, and I know François is currently cooking up a few more ideas.

His other work has what you might call more standard applications, but whether he’s designing a small Milking Stool or an entire sound recording studio, his meticulous attention to material and craft and his unique combination of modern technology and handmade elements remains constant. See all his work and check out my visit to his Brooklyn studio.

Design week trend: LEDs. ICFF 2012.

At Wanted Design in New York, installed in huge warehouse space on Eleventh Avenue, design students from the Rochester Institute of Technology stand displayed a clever lamp using LEDs, and recycled glass tubing. This in combination with Corning and the Vignelli Design Center at RIT. Also at Wanted, Todd Bracher and 3M offered a clever wall system of LEDs and reflectors with a Sixties, pop feel.

LEDs were also a theme at Javits Center: new models at Humanscale and by Peter Stathis were on view, as well as more from Konzept, the pioneers of affordable practical LED lamps. Jake Dyson’s CSYS LED tasklight has a subtle touch control for brightness and angle.
