Carpenters Workshop Gallery artist Vincent Dubourg’s work, Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland – a black steel buffet table cut and bent at one end to look frayed – has won a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design. The award, the first of its kind, was announced on November 10 at a dinner honoring the best of the inaugural Pavilion of Arts and Design New York fair.

Commenting on Dubourg’s win, Loic Le Gaillard co-founder and director of Carpenters Workshop Gallery (CWG), based in London and Paris, said of Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland,  “It’s got everything—emotion, beautiful craftsmanship. It’s wonderful to see a piece of design can stretch way beyond what one would expect for a piece of furniture.” Carpenters Workshop Gallery is renowned as one of the world‘s foremost contemporary design-art galleries. “That’s the beauty of our mission, to really push these young guys into the spotlight. It’s a constant battle to show how great all these young artists are,” Le Gaillaird said of Dubourg and the other artists represented by CWG.

Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland was designed and crafted by Dubourg in 2009. The work is more of a sculpture than a piece of furniture. Dubourg’s conversations through his sculptural works reflect a dialogue between traditions and nature. The embodiment of the materials and their synthesis of versatility in Double Buffet Nouvelle Zéland deconstruct the archetypes of furniture. By releasing their origins from their natural elements, and by directing its forms with artisanal craftsmanship, the artist presents sculptural works through an alert explosion of intention.

Some of the works shown by CWG at PAD New York include Sebastian Brajkovic, whose artworks are included in the permanent collection of the New York‘s Museum of Arts and Design. Brajkovic is showing new conceptions from his notorious Lathe Collection. Mathieu Lehanneur, of France, is presenting S.M.O.K.E., a glass orb that encapsulates the diffusion of a plume of smoke, and Daylight Dome, a state-of-the-art light-sculpture/chandelier. Dutch design duo Lonneke Gordijn & Ralph Nauta continue with their wildly successful Fragile Futures series showcasing Fragile Futures 3.10 light sculptures. Multidisciplinary art collective, Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) is presenting Jubilee Tree and two pieces from their latest series of sculptural design objects including the lighting piece Jewel and dressoir Forest.

Pappa Mamma Lamp by Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) was also a Jury Panel favorite. AVL is merging art and life, using it as a tool to explore the idea of conception through the Pappa Mamma Lamp, complete with Penis, Vagina and Foetus. This lamp is a provocative illustration of the beginnings of human life. An oversized cross-section of reproductive organs is the substance of Pappa Mamma Lamp. It rests on the scrotum and ovaries as the phallussits inside the vagina and a growing baby lies curled up in the womb from which the lamp is powered. [ avl ]

Carpenters workshop gallery. New paris gallery opening.

Sep 1, 2011

Loïc Le Gaillard and Julien Lombrail, the partners of Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, will inaugurate a new gallery in Paris. Carpenters Workshop Gallery Paris is located in the prominent neighborhood of the 4th arrondissement, on the border between the Marais and the Beaubourg plateau. The gallery is in a historically stimulating location for the art world as it formerly housed the Galerie de France for many decades. The monumental space covers 600 m² on three floors, with over 350 m² of exhibition space operating on two floors. The renovation of the gallery was carried out by the decorator Jean de Piepape. The Gallery founders were both born into the core of the Parisian art-world, Le Gaillard the son of an eminent gallerist; Lombrail the son of the renowned auctioneer. Prior to meeting, each was already independently intending to open a gallery promoting contemporary art, design and the place where the two overlap. They quickly progressed setting up the Carpenters Workshop Gallery together, on the premise that sculpture can bring depth, narrative and emotion to contemporary design. The Gallery began life in a former carpenter’s workshop in 2004, an old industrial space amid Chelsea Gas Works. In 2008 the Carpenters Workshop opened a second gallery in Albemarle Street, Mayfair. Always following the instinct of its founders without compromise, the Gallery’s exhibitions attracted much acclaim and quickly amassed a reputation for presenting works of deep contemporary significance. As the number of artists grew, so did the diversity of their backgrounds and practices. With a light touch, the Gallery brought a refreshing playfulness to the debate between art and design. The works exhibited often reflect a sense of humor crucial to the Gallery’s identity. This unconventional approach to hybrid practice was then contextualized within the traditional home of fine art in London. The field of Design Art is at the dawn of its potential, it proposes a sensitive, intellectual and innovative approach to the object. The pieces are true, functional sculptures, incorporating the paradox of the unique and the mass produced, of art and function. The Carpenters Workshop Gallery collection introduces the public to the latest design aesthetics, enriching and enlightening the contemporary design landscape and discourse. This Parisian location confirms Julien Lombrail’s and Loïc Le Gaillard’s commitment to the international promotion of their artists and designers, as well as their international spectrum of esteemed collectors. Together, Julien Lombrail and Loïc Le Gaillard guide the designers toward art and the artist toward design. Carpenters Workshop Gallery represents: Atelier Van Lieshout . Sebastian Brajkovic . Design miami/basel 2011. Carpenters workshop gallery.

Jun 16, 2011

Carpenters Workshop Gallery expands the boundaries of design by uniting and transcending the contested categories of conceptual functional sculpture through thought-provoking exhibitions. At Design Miami/ Basel, Carpenters Workshop will present a privately commissioned new chandelier by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn from Drift. Other highlights will include Atelier Van Lieshout’s Thin Man, a bench/sculpture that serves as Van Lieshout’s exploration into the ways in which Anglo-Saxon and European society sit on the back of the Third World; and works by Vincent Dubourg which fuse furniture, architecture, and sculpture.
