Carpenters Workshop Gallery is having a solo exhibition of six new limited edition and unique works by the celebrated American designer Wendell Castle from November 4 through January 7th, 2011.
Building on a celebrated furniture design career spanning half a century, six new limited edition and unique works by American furniture designer Wendell Castle will be showcased in his second solo exhibition in Europe. Castle’s work is recognized for its sardonic sense of humor and uniquely sculptural use of materials, including his signature use of stack-laminated wood. His new body of work furthers this tradition of material based design, while also applying his distinctive exploration of volume and shape. Exquisitely crafted in stained ash and walnut wood with a smooth oil finish, the organic, curvilinear forms of this new collection link it to many of his past masterworks. Exploring structural concepts in a sculptural context, a confidence and quickness of gesture suggest a new dimensionality. […]
“The expression ‘best foot forward’ comes from the practice used in earlier times of keeping chairs that were not in use against the wall. Therefore, the front leg had all the decorative carving and the back leg was plain. In this body of work I have given careful thought to the leg and made it unusually prominent, or the opposite of no legs at all. My coffee table ‘Time Passing’ is without legs, while my chair ‘Moonless Night’ has three very large legs.” – [ Wendell Castle ] [ carpenters workshop gallery ]

On 18 June, the V&A unveiled SWARM STUDY / III, a new interactive light installation by Random International. The monumental piece will overhang the staircase that adjoins the Architecture and Ceramics Galleries for the next three years. The installation has been developed specifically for this position, in association with the Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
Swarm Study / III is made up of illuminated brass rods, suspended from the ceiling in an arrangement of four large cubes. As visitors move up and down the stairs, so the light follows in swarm-like formations, varying subtly in its intensity. Tracked by a camera, the visitors’ movements stimulate the behavior of the installation. Controlled by a complex algorithm, Swarm Study / III translates collective behavioral patterns found in nature into moving light. Though apparently inanimate, the installation is brought to life by visitors’ activity, engaging them with both the swarm itself and the surrounding space of the Museum.

“living architecture” is a London – based project focused on creating unique living spaces in unexpected locations.
The winning proposal for their upcoming ‘house’ on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall is a boat of sorts, designed by David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner. The boat, perched on the edge of building, has two decks, an upper and lower, that provide exceptional views of the city, a panorama that stretches from Big Ben to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
“Inside, the boat is a beautifully crafted timber object, full of nooks and crannies to explore. On arrival ‘aboard’, a nautical flag will be raised to signal occupation, with the visitors invited to fill in a logbook on the ‘bridge’ of the boat, detailing what they have experienced during their stay, out of the window as much as within themselves. This is contemporary architecture at its most playful, beguiling and thought-provoking.”
