NY design week – icff 2012: season one.

After four product students met during a Young Entrepreneurs class at Finland’s Turku University of Applied Sciences, they decided to actually put the goals of the class into action and founded Season One, a platform that sells their own designs as well those by other emerging Finnish talent. Their booth at ICFF featured a few of their minimal designs, like Risto, a simple birch and silicone rack for hanging dish cloths. Since many kitchen towels don’t have a loop with which to hang them, designer Ida Jelena Utriainen wanted to make a rack without pegs or hooks. Risto’s birch plank has three circular cut-outs with a piece of silicone that you can slide your loop-less towels through. The towels they used were also designed by Utriainen in collaboration with Lida Halonen. Their prints “are inspired by traditional craft techniques such as patchwork and knitting…that showcase old Finnish traditions in a modern way.”
Personally, I love the Aava trestle legs, which you can use with any tabletop – no screws necessary. The legs are made of Finnish birch with white painted metal hinges that allow the legs to fold open or closed for easy transportation. It’s a great idea for a temporary work table or for someone on the go as all you need to take with you are the legs. Aava also works very nicely with the Birka chair, a small stool with three legs that can easily be attached or removed – again, for easy transportation or storage.
