An awful lot happens without people being aware. They come to certain conclusions and even performs actions without ever really, consciously considering why. This is what forms both the impetus and the investigation of the studio’s work; we experiment. We attempt to simulate the natural by reducing the subtleties of behavior down to the minimum required for recognition to explore our own, human, existence. / rAndom International, 2012.

London-based studio rAndom International has been creating kinetic artworks and interactive installations since 2005. In the short time since the studio’s inception, rAndom has made a significant shift in focus from the object to the experience. Before The Rain chronicles this transition through the studio’s oeuvre, simultaneously exhibited to a fuller extent than ever before, alongside new works.

self portrait 2010 | light reactive screen, corian frame, electronic uv glass led print head, rapid prototype and tracking software

audience 2008 | cast iron, 128 servo motors, 64 mirrors, custom motion tracking software, camera

The acclaimed installation Audience marks an early investigation into performance, behavior and the role of the viewer -something again explored in Study For A Mirror, rAndom’s first piece for Carpenters Workshop Gallery. 2010s seminal work Swarm Light, which makes collective decision-making manifest in light, is testament to the studio’s first foray into extended behavioral research, which has since become crucial to the studio’s practice. Movement had been studied, in different ways, through OLED work You Fade To Light, kinetic sculpture Fly and, most recently, performative light installation Future Self.

future self 2012 | aluminum, electronics, 3d cameras, led’s

swarm 2010 | installation at v&a | 9,000 led’s, brass rods, 3,000 circuit boards, sound sensors and software

Exploring both the passing and the perception of time through light and motion, rAndom’s Study of Time has particular poignance in the context of this exhibition. Before The Rain explores the development of this unique studio and is a nod to their most significant tipping point yet, the forthcoming exhibition at Barbican Curve, Rain Room.

Pieces on show: audience, you fade to light, swarm, study of time, sunlight video, self portrait study for a mirror, future self, the fly.

Carpenters workshop gallery. New paris gallery opening.

Sep 1, 2011

Loïc Le Gaillard and Julien Lombrail, the partners of Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, will inaugurate a new gallery in Paris. Carpenters Workshop Gallery Paris is located in the prominent neighborhood of the 4th arrondissement, on the border between the Marais and the Beaubourg plateau. The gallery is in a historically stimulating location for the art world as it formerly housed the Galerie de France for many decades. The monumental space covers 600 m² on three floors, with over 350 m² of exhibition space operating on two floors. The renovation of the gallery was carried out by the decorator Jean de Piepape. The Gallery founders were both born into the core of the Parisian art-world, Le Gaillard the son of an eminent gallerist; Lombrail the son of the renowned auctioneer. Prior to meeting, each was already independently intending to open a gallery promoting contemporary art, design and the place where the two overlap. They quickly progressed setting up the Carpenters Workshop Gallery together, on the premise that sculpture can bring depth, narrative and emotion to contemporary design. The Gallery began life in a former carpenter’s workshop in 2004, an old industrial space amid Chelsea Gas Works. In 2008 the Carpenters Workshop opened a second gallery in Albemarle Street, Mayfair. Always following the instinct of its founders without compromise, the Gallery’s exhibitions attracted much acclaim and quickly amassed a reputation for presenting works of deep contemporary significance. As the number of artists grew, so did the diversity of their backgrounds and practices. With a light touch, the Gallery brought a refreshing playfulness to the debate between art and design. The works exhibited often reflect a sense of humor crucial to the Gallery’s identity. This unconventional approach to hybrid practice was then contextualized within the traditional home of fine art in London. The field of Design Art is at the dawn of its potential, it proposes a sensitive, intellectual and innovative approach to the object. The pieces are true, functional sculptures, incorporating the paradox of the unique and the mass produced, of art and function. The Carpenters Workshop Gallery collection introduces the public to the latest design aesthetics, enriching and enlightening the contemporary design landscape and discourse. This Parisian location confirms Julien Lombrail’s and Loïc Le Gaillard’s commitment to the international promotion of their artists and designers, as well as their international spectrum of esteemed collectors. Together, Julien Lombrail and Loïc Le Gaillard guide the designers toward art and the artist toward design. Carpenters Workshop Gallery represents: Atelier Van Lieshout . Sebastian Brajkovic . Swarm study/iii. London.

Jul 14, 2011

On 18 June, the V&A unveiled SWARM STUDY / III, a new interactive light installation by Random International. The monumental piece will overhang the staircase that adjoins the Architecture and Ceramics Galleries for the next three years. The installation has been developed specifically for this position, in association with the Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

Swarm Study / III is made up of illuminated brass rods, suspended from the ceiling in an arrangement of four large cubes. As visitors move up and down the stairs, so the light follows in swarm-like formations, varying subtly in its intensity. Tracked by a camera, the visitors’ movements stimulate the behavior of the installation. Controlled by a complex algorithm, Swarm Study / III translates collective behavioral patterns found in nature into moving light. Though apparently inanimate, the installation is brought to life by visitors’ activity, engaging them with both the swarm itself and the surrounding space of the Museum.
