pininfarina is best known for designing ferraris and other italian cars. but it has also done objects and other vehicles. the company recently designed coca-cola’s high tech vending machine and has now done a new eurostar high-speed train. pininfarina has also designed high-speed trains for spanish railways and cars for swiss, danish and norwegian railroads as well as trams and light rail.

pininfarina expertise in the rail industry ] together with eurostar, pininfarina has created a new design for trains that focuses on a great travel experience, thus mixing the pininfarina style and outstanding functionality with a clear vision of future train travel. pininfarina has extensive experience in the rail industry, having designed the interiors and exteriors of italy’s high-speed trains.
the etr 500 was the first italian project for a high speed train, appeared in 1985 as the result of a joint project by ferrovie dello stato, breda and pininfarina. it was a demanding project, all the more so in view of the characteristics of the rail infrastructure of the day.
it was a challenge that pininfarina responded to with far-reaching stylistic and aerodynamic research, which led to the creation of a model with a high technological impact, that was extremely flexible in terms of operating requirements and could transport up to 700 people on each train.
along the years pininfarina has also designed high speed trains for spanish railways; rolling stock for swiss, danish and norwegian railways; automated light rail cars in lille, northern france; and trams for cities in italy, greece, sweden and turkey.

Pininfarina, the traditional designer for Ferrari has created a concept for BMW. “With the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé, the two time-honored companies are unveiling the outcome of their first collaboration at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013. The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé is a one-off and represents the exclusive interpretation of a luxurious BMW Coupé as seen through the eyes of Pininfarina. Working in close consultation, the two design teams have created a new automotive persona.” BMW says

Pininfarina is best known as the designer of bodies for Ferrari and Maserati and other car brands. Its famous red 1947 Cisitalia sports car enjoys a place of pride in the design collection at MOMA in New York. But it is from another side of its work that Pininfarina has drawn most of the 400 pieces of its work set for display at the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrave Square in London beginning June 22. Four lovely cedar scale models represent highlights of the auto design history and present—the 1947 Cisitalia 202 Berlinetta , the 1967 Ferrari Dino 206 Gt , the Birdcage 75th concept and the recent Cambiano concept, an extended range plug in electric debuted at this years Geneva Motor show.
But the focus of this show is Pininfarina Extra, which specializes in product design and more recently interiors. It was set up in 1986 and directed by Paolo Pininfarina and has its studios in Cambiano near Turin. Its products include ski boots and motorcycle helmets. Credits include the Coca-Cola Freestyle drinks machine, the Snaidero Ola 20 kitchen, and the Primatist B62’ yacht. Among its most recent projects in architecture are the Keating Hotel in San Diego, the interiors of the Juventus Stadium, and a residential tower, the Millecento in Miami.
Older items include the Riva rocking horse and the Guerlain Homme perfume bottle. The most recent, seen in London, are a new Lavazza espresso maker and, being unveiled for the first time, a sort of monorail or so-called personal rapid transportation system developed with Vectus, a Korean company, shown in model form at the gallery. Along with the show the firm is sponsoring a design contest for Royal College of Art students; winners will be announced June 21. [ details ]
