Superyacht. Zaha hadid.

Zaha Hadid’s latest is a yacht—five yachts, actually, each of them a variant on a family of boats with a fluid, biological look. Each can also be customized in comfort features and other outfittings by the company of Blohm+Voss, which also did a Philippe Starck design earlier.

ZHA_B+V_Birdseye view_128m420-foot concept yacht

The idea of the Unique Circle Yachts allows for variation of a genotype and its phenotypes. The company says, “Zaha Hadid’s design is malleable to suit the very individual wishes and needs of a potential customer.”
Hadid’s office describes the Unique Circle Yachts this way:

The overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals.

Whereas traditional yacht designs adhere to a strict horizontal order, this exoskeleton creates an intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the design. The fluid design language of the master prototype has been applied to the five subsequent 90m variations of the Unique Circle Yachts, creating a design with the highest correlation between the various options.

[ official release ]
The design concept, launched at the latest exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s work at the David Gill Gallery in London, is based around the sculptural form of a master prototype conceived for a 128m yacht. In addition, the Unique Circle Yachts by Zaha Hadid Architects for Blohm+Voss is a family of five individual 90m yachts that creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully-engineered yacht design.

The 90m JAZZ yacht is the first of the five Unique Circle Yachts that has been technically specified and detailed by the naval architects at Blohm+Voss. Its lineage from the 128m master prototype is evident, with further technical refinements to address the specifications required for ocean crossings.

In addition to JAZZ, four further 90m yachts have been designed to fulfil the different requirements and individual requests of their designated owners. Each design will vary in layout according to the owner’s preferences.

The design process was very much a collaborative one, with Blohm+Voss and ZHA working together to address the practical challenges of designing a yacht while remaining true to the design language of the master prototype. The resulting designs are the synergy of Hadid’s design vision and the technical expertise of Blohm+Voss, allowing a flexibility and customisation in the eventual design of the yacht.

“As a dynamic object that moves in dynamic environments, the design of a yacht must incorporate additional parameters beyond those for architecture – which all become much more extreme on water. Each yacht is an engineered platform that integrates specific hydrodynamic and structural demands together with the highest levels of comfort, spatial quality and safety.” explained Zaha Hadid.

Blohm+Voss has the proven experience, the in-house technical expertise, and the capacities to offer tailor-made solutions for the most demanding buyers in the superyacht market. The naval architects of Blohm+Voss are forever pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation. In recent years Blohm+Voss has built many of the world’s most prestigious mega yachts. These include the groundbreaking 394-foot “A “designed by Philippe Starck , the “Eclipse”, designed by Terrence Disdale, which at 533 feet (162.5 m) is the world’s second largest private yacht. Other Blohm + Voss superyacht projects include, the “Mayan Queen IV” and the “Palladium”.

Dr. Herbert Aly, CEO and Managing Partner of Blohm+Voss says: “On an aesthetic level, a superyacht is a great design task as everything is customised down to the last detail. A superyacht is by definition an exercise in total design, where every detail is looked at with attention and refinement. In the past, in the era of steam liners, there has been an attempt of utilising ship building elements in architecture. Zaha Hadid and her team have taken this ethos and created a bold new vision and a new benchmark in the design of superyachts.”

Aly adds: “The idea of the Unique Circle Yachts allows for variation of a genotype and its phenotypes, offering a range of possible solutions based on an cognate platform. As a result Zaha Hadid’s design is malleable to suit the very individual wishes and needs of a potential customer which lies at the heart of Blohm+Voss’ approach to yacht design. The strength of the design lies not just in its functionality and form, but also its effortless adaptability.”

Zaha Hadid Architects and Blohm+Voss have transformed yacht design; creating an innovative concept and developing this vision into a fully seaworthy prototype that offers dynamic new possibilities for naval architecture.

Luminaire: design+world. Design miami 2012.

Dec 15, 2012

designapplause is at the second iteration of luminaire’s ‘design+world’, an ‘important’ installation, because you will see product debuts and first-time U.S. appearances from notable world-class designers and producers. in six hours the installation will open. we wanted to include a photo of nasir kassamali but he said “i will let our work speak for me and my photograph.” doug mcclellan, nasir’s assistant, is showing us around. doug’s title is design catalyst.

“the collection in the window we’re presenting are pieces by nendo including a new collection by brisazza bagno introduced in milan in 2012. the first time being shown in the U.S. we’re focusing on three pieces:, the mirror, the sink and the sliding drawer. also the ‘yuki screen’ room divider from cappellini, and ‘rokumaru’ coat rack by de padova. we are introducing for the first time in the U.S. pendent lights ‘growing vases’ and ‘press lamp’ by lasvit. here’s the nendo ‘k%’ collection which is made in china and singapore and first introduced this year in the U.S. at luminaire chicago in june during neocon. in this collection are the interesting ‘melt’ chair and ‘rain’ book shelf, ‘heavy’ table series, ‘scissors’ room divider and the ‘pencil’ chair.”

“and we’re also launching our e-commerce store and we have a pop-up shop of those pieces here as well. there are about 100 items in the pop-up and about 500 on the online store ranging from small accessories and lighting, side chairs, small tables, so it’s really a curated section of the best luminaire has to offer.”

ciclotte | luca schieppati | 2010

luca schieppati took his ciclò — a concept bike that the milan design museum liked enough to include in its permanent collection—and transformed it into an exercise machine, ‘ciclotte’. push the pedals and the epicycloid crank system spins the magnetized main wheel. manufactured using materials like carbon, steel and fiberglass, the personal workout system incorporates a unique epicycloids transmission system. this in turn generates a magnetic field and plenty of thigh-burning resistance. the bikes appearance at design+world is the U.S. debut.

Tokujin yoshioka awarded 2012 now! design à vivre.

Dec 31, 2011

Maison & Objet just presented their 2012 Now! Design à Vivre award to Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka. A favorite of the luxury world, Yoshioka has worked with Hermès, BW, Cartier and Issey Miyake as well as museums like the Musee d’Orsay and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. But aside from delivery luxe goods, Yoshioka is known as a “designer of the senses” and for exploring new “technopoetic ground.”

Just what makes something technopoetic? Yoshioka’s 2007 Pane Chair is a good example. Made from small, lightweight fibers baked in a kiln, it’s an excellent model of how rethinking materials can yield both innovative solutions and exciting new forms. I mean, when was the last time you looked at a bunch of fiber shavings and thought, hey that might make a good chair?

Earlier this year Yoshioka unveiled a new furniture collection for Kartell so minimalist the pieces are almost completely invisible. In fact, that’s what Yoshioka named the collection. “Invisibles” plays with our idea of physical space with benches and chairs that make it appear as if the user is seated in mid air. “In the last few years,” Yoshioka said, “I have been thinking about a design that would include natural phenomena and invisible elements such as sense, wind and light. The presence of the object is eradicated and it will create a scenery of a sitter floating in the air.”

Scenery is the key word there; I imagine a room full of “Invisibles” would be much more effective than just one in a cluster of so-called regular chairs. But aside from the coolness and conceptual factor, just how comfortable would these things be? At least Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chair has a smooth, rounded back and a shaped seat. As I’m not in the market for luxe goods I doubt I’ll be test driving one any time soon, but a word to those on the hunt for injection-molded polycarbonate: bring a cushion.

Lighting up l.a. Flos.

Dec 1, 2011

click > enlarge all images

Few streets in Los Angeles are lined with boutiques as tony as those on Robertson Boulevard. While the street is still associated as a fashion destination littered with paparazzos aiming for starlets in stride with their Grande Macchiatos, the fabled street just got one shop closer to being known as a genuine design destination with today’s opening of Flos by The Diva Group.

The Italian lighting company originally founded in 1962, well known for their partnerships with distinguished designers such as Philippe Starck, Jasper Morrison, Marcel Wanders and Marc Newson, will also be opening a boutique in San Francisco this week to serve as their two west coast outposts in the United States. In addition, Flos has a store in New York City, as well as several other stores in Europe and Asia and work with retailers all over the world.

d’e light | philippe starck

When walking through the newly minted Los Angeles boutique, one is filled with pure wonderment. Flos’ newest designs, like the 2012 D’E-Light by Philippe Starck, a task light which includes a continuous LED and an iPod dock on its top, grabs attention as much as a futuristic gadget as it does for its beautiful form. In addition to the newest technological advancements in lighting, Flos is dedicated to their stable of classics like the iconic Arco floor lamp designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962 as well as more obscure designs, like the kite-like Ariette wall lamp designed by Tobia Scarpa in 1973. Without a thorough knowledge in design history, it is quite difficult to correctly identify the design year or even decade of many of the Flos inventory; their entire fleet exudes freshness, modernity and relevance.

The show-stopper at the Los Angeles store, however, is surely Ron Gilad’s ambient installation on the back wall of the store entitled Wall Piercing, which intertwines panels and panels of tube lighting into one seamless backdrop. The piece can come in several configurations and includes the ability for several colors to rotate and several options for degrees of light intensities. Gilad was in from Brooklyn to speak about his inspiration, “I wanted to work with the minimum container that could encapsulate the LED and then interpret it through my language, which is lines.” Recently this piece, originally designed in 2010, was accepted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as The Art Institute of Chicago.

Philippe starck: hip designer shockingly out of touch (and kind of depressing)

Nov 18, 2011

Philippe Starck has, for a long time, been in the enviable position of designing whatever he likes and getting paid for it. And the designs themselves always seem to be right on the cutting edge (if I can use that term without inducing your derision) – a thoughtful and unique mix of old and new and never-before-seen. Remember his genius citrus juicer that’s part sci-fi, part Beetlejuice and all parts totally clever and (deceptively) simple?

Recently, however, Starck has been having doubts about his sense of purpose, telling The Independent that not being able to save lives and tackle key global issues in his work leaves him feeling “impotent.” To that I say: get over it. You’re rich and famous and yet you still can’t save the world, boo freaking hoo. Design was never meant to solve the global debt crisis and it never will, unless, of course, you can design a better economic system and power structure for the entire world.

Still, Starck wanted to do something to better people’s lives (though frankly, Philippe, your juicer has done wonders for me already), so in an effort to design “democratic and affordable products” he made a photo booth, noting that photos “help us to exist.” Not that I disagree with that, but most people, even some of the poorest, have phones with a camera feature, which are not only mobile, but manipulable through apps, many of which are also free. And for those people who don’t have phones I doubt a Philippe Starck photo booth is coming to their corner of the world any time soon. And even if it did, it’d have to be solar powered. That, I’d like to see.

As if his photo booth idea wasn’t half-baked and out of date to begin with, Starck also bemoaned the likelihood that his photo booths would just be vandalized anyway. “Twenty years ago,” he said, “it was possible to design something pretty and people to respect it. Not now.” Oh yeah, ‘cuz graffiti is a new invention.
