from 12-20 may, design lovers of all ages can head to times square for the fifth edition of new york’s biggest public design interface: thedesignpavilion! held annually during nycxdesign—new york city’s design week—the nine-day interactive hub for all things design will make broadway between w 43rd and w 48th streets its home.
founded and produced by ilene shaw (shaw + co productions) in partnership with thetimes square alliance, the design pavilion will offer engaging installations, pop-up markets, immersive activations, and more across five plazas, as well as produce an enriching schedule of talks on the subjects of design, sustainability, and the future of our cities.
in just five years it has exponentially grown from 25,000 visitors to close to 5 million and expects 400,000 visitors daily in 2020. admission is free and the pavilion is open to all who pass by, encouraging exploration and curiosity about design in so many fresh and innovative forms.
for the third year, times square will serve as a hub for nycxdesign hosting design pavilion, the official nycxdesign information kiosk featuring design talks, design market, nasdaq design broadcasts, and year two of times square design lab bringing new ideas for public space to the plazas of times square. all of this will activate five (5) pedestrian plazas with immersive installations and daily programs featuring the work of leading international architects, designers and visionaries.
this may during nycxdesign, carl hansen & søn will present its 2019 launches from danish design masters hans j. wegner, børge mogensen & frits henningsen. in addition, the 110-year-old danish manufacturer will present exciting new additions to its portfolio from austrian design trio eoos. the new furniture pieces will be showcased in carl hansen & søn’s freshly-staged new york flagship store set alongside masterworks from the golden age of danish design as well as contemporary classics.

the #pldsgn exhibition is combined with a pop-up shop stocked with contemporary products designed and made locally in poland. visitors can survey the array of polish design goods available and make purchases, perusing a selection of ceramics, textiles, books, home accessories and items for children. the presentation features a choice of original objects made by emerging designers from poland working across a range of techniques, from detailed handiwork to pieces produced using 3-d printing. the pop-up shop will live in the wanteddesign store at industry city (274 36th street, brooklyn / subway: d, n, & r – 36th st. station ) for three weeks following wanteddesign manhattan.
#pldsgn is also launching the guide to polish design, a great, virtual journey through time, through various political landscapes, social conventions, changing tastes, habits, styles and needs. in short, a walk through of 100 years of the best of polish design.
the project is organized by the adam mickiewicz institute and is part of its program promoting polish design worldwide.
the nycxdesign awards & party is a highlight of nycxdesign, new york city’s annual celebration of design that attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees and designers from across the globe. the nycxdesign awards honors outstanding products and projects in categories that span major areas of design, from architecture to interiors, from products to accessories, from craft to technology.
the icff party immediately follows the nycxdesign awards and is presented by icff and interior design magazine. the gala party features open bar, passed o’deuvres and live entertainment

building on the success of his award-winning observatory lighting collection, lee broom will debut new editions of key pieces during nycxdesign at his new york showroom.
the presentation will include the launch of little lens flair, a small-scale version of the popular spherical lighting piece that launched during new york design week in 2018. also on show will be the eclipse light which was the recipient of the ‘best in show’ award for nycxdesign 2018. eclipse will be showcased in a new polished gold edition alongside lee broom’s celebrated orion lights which will be presented in an elegant, gunmetal finish. the lee broom showroom will be curated to reflect the new editions within a dark and striking setting.
since observatory launched in milan, new york and london in 2018, the collection has won four international design awards, including more recently ‘best lighting’ at the 2019 elle deco international design awards held during milan design week.

taking place may 10-12 at building 77 in the brooklyn navy yard, brooklyn designs will kick off the first weekend of nycxdesign with a curated and shoppable exhibition of 60+ brooklyn-based design studios and brands including collective shows from the brooklyn navy yard, in the pursuit and cooler gallery. the show will also feature compelling talks about all facets of design, hands-on textile and design workshops, multi-sensory experiences—including a listening lounge furnished by room & board—,culinary fare from local vendors and family-friendly programming including mother’s day activations.
