The A+D Architecture and Design Museum and Angeleno Magazine present a series of four salons at iconic mid-century modern homes in Los Angeles. In 1946 four musicians returne from the war and pooled their resources to create the cooperative housing group. Salon #2 will take place at the A. Quincy Jones designed MHA site office. The site is historic-cultural monument #680, with sloping glass walls and cantilevered wing as a metaphor for America’s boundless self-confidence after World War II. The building literally takes flight across the canyon.

On December 15, 2011 Wright will auction the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Kenneth Laurent House and furnishings. The property has been consigned to the Chicago-based auction house by the original owner, Mr. Laurent.
In 1948 Mr. Laurent commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build a home that integrated his needs as a wheelchair-bound disabled veteran with Wright’s signature open plan designs. Wright used to opportunity to develop his elliptical plan for the first time, the resulting soft curves, open floor plan and flowing space were utilized in later houses in the 1950s. The Laurents became friendly with Wright and traveled often to Taliesin commissioning interior furnishing for the home and a later addition to the property. In conversation with Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., Frank Lloyd Wright referred to the Laurent House as a serene masterpiece and his “little gem.”
“We are interested in the preservation mid-century architectural masterpieces,” states Richard Wright, President of Wright. “We have an audience that appreciates the historical and aesthetic value of these special homes and is not strictly bound by the values of the local real estate market.” The Kenneth Laurent house and furnishings will be sold on December 15, 2011 during Wright’s bi-annual Important Design auction, a sale featuring more than 250 lots of exceptional mid-century designs. The home and original Frank Lloyd Wright designed furnishings will be estimated at $500,000 – $700,000. The sale will be conducted with Diane Meltmar of Gambino Realtors of Rockford and in conjunction with Brian Kuzdas of RealEstateAuctions.com.
Wright is an international auction house based in Chicago that has offered historically important architectural masterpieces in their art and design auctions before, most famously with the sale of Pierre Koenig’s Case Study House #21 in Los Angeles that sold in December 2006 for $3,185,600.

Apple products combined cutting-edge design with cutting-edge technology. American ate it up. You don’t always (or usually) get such class acts in the consumer marketplace.
But I want to underscore another class act in American functional design: Herman Miller. I have an Eames chair (the one with the metal frame and wood back and seat) that my father-in-law used in the office of the building supplies business he built after he and and his wife fled Germany in 1938. Many of their possessions reflected the mid-Century modernist taste.
Unfortunately and non-intentionally a relative somehow broke the back off the chair shortly after my husband died. I wanted it fixed appropriately. Someone advised me to take it to an art gallery that specialized in mid-century modernism. But I just called Herman Miller and asked if they could fix it.
Well, you would have thought I was the First Lady by the way I was treated. As promised, shortly after the call I received two emails with my case number, a sample UPS label and a personal note from the woman with whom I originally spoke who had an expertise on whatever product anyone wished to return.
It turns out that Herman Miller simply needed to remove the broken molding on chair’s back, send it back and I could reattach it using a standard screwdriver. My contact advised me it would be a 3-4 week turn-around. Instead, I received the rebuilt back piece within a week of sending it.
It’s difficult to describe the feeling I had: the confidence that Herman Miller was actually taking care of me and my priceless family heirloom. My in-laws, carried the Bauhaus sensibility with them when they sought refuge in America.
This is not a story of bravery, heroism, moral enlightenment or anything like that. It is simply a statement of appreciation for a level of care and professionalism that all too often is missing in America today. My chair, whole again, represents a heritage I want to pass on.

1946 single-family modernist gem.
The Booth (Damora) House. Philip Johnson’s first commission was for Richard and Olga Booth, a young couple who wanted a weekend house near Manhattan. Architectural photographer Robert Damora and architect Sirkka Damora purchased the house in 1955 for $23,500 and lived there for 55 years. In 2010, the widowed Sirkka Damora put the house on the market for $2 million. The price is now $1.6 million. A little tired looking but a little TLC will bring it back.
