The operating system and hardware war is fun to watch. I’m a mac user almost all the way – I traded my iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy S six months ago and not sorry except for the much stronger iPhone app business model. So here are the Q2 2011 numbers and links on this topic and an applause for Apple’s nice touch on product design.
According to June data from Nielsen, Google’s Android operating system (OS) now claims the largest share of the U.S. consumer smartphone market with 39 percent. Apple’s iOS is in second place with 28 percent, while RIM Blackberry is down to 20 percent.
However, because Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system, it is clearly the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States. Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6 percent of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers. Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8 percent of smartphone owners while their Windows Mobile/WP7 phones are used by 2 percent of smartphone owners.
because i am tied-to-the-hip with my new android galaxy s and ipad2, obviously this info is of interest. i’ve had galaxy s almost nine months and pleased that its design mirrors the ipad2 better than the iphone. and i like the light weight and user interface of this phone. no complaints. fortunately, not pursuing android apps just yet.
here’s a niched study both interesting and probably meaningless. [ fastcompany ] [ trulia ] [ galaxy s ]

i’ll be the first to admit that the mobile tail looks pretty silly, but that’s why i like it.
Besides, you get the idea that a design group that spells its name with two extra o’s like Sutdiooo Factory, has a sense of humor. Not only does the Mobile Tail solve an actual problem like the need to read the news or play a game (seriously, who doesn’t get cramps playing Words with Friends?) or just operate your iPhone in general, hands free, but the design itself is compelling and, as an added bonus, it makes you smile.
The simple act of propping up your iPhone can be achieved easily enough, with an easel-like stand à la the iPad or even just a more straightforward suction cup add-on. But Studiooo Factory based their design on the idea that our phones are like pets, so why not give them a tail?
