Jaguar and williams f1 to make a hybrid supercar.

May 6, 2011

Will this be world’s fastest hybrid? A combo Prius and Veyron? Jaguar and Williams F1 is teaming up on a greenish supercar. The hybrid tech is a ‘state-of-the-art, small-capacity, highly boosted internal combustion engine’ and an electric motor on each axle and lithium-ion battery technology from Williams. The Jaguar C-X75 will be four-wheel drive, and able to drive using just the combustion engine, in EV mode with a range ‘in excess of 30 miles or use a combination of the two. There are three drive configurations: EV, Normal and Track.

250 cars will be built, 200 destined as road cars and 50 as racers. You can order one or more today. Production is confirmed for a 2013 delivery. Price estimate $1 million-plus USD. Production name is Jaguar CX-75. [ veyron ] [ car magazine ]

Urbee. World's first 3d printed car.

Nov 9, 2010

Hybrid can run solely on renewable energy or get over 200 mpg at highway speeds

Urbee is a two-seater hybrid vehicle and the first prototype ever to have entire body and glass panels 3D printed. Urbee is envisioned as an environmentally sustainable, safe to drive and fuel efficient vehicle. The electric / liquid-fuel hybrid reaches more than 200 mpg, highway and 100 mpg, city in U.S. gallons with either gasoline or ethanol.

For combined city and highway use, the Urbee gets about 150 mpg and costs only 2 cents per mile. This is only about 10 percent of the fuel consumed by a typical SUV. And on the highway, it costs about 1 cent per mile, or 95 percent less than that same SUV.

The car is charged overnight from any standard home electrical outlet. Alternately, it can be charged by renewable energy from a windmill or a solar-panel array small enough to fit on top a single-car garage.

All exterior components were created using an additive manufacturing process using Stratasys’ digital manufacturing service – RedEye on Demand. The development partner is Winnipeg engineering group, Kor Ecologic.

Porsche. Hybrid in every range.

Oct 20, 2010

porsche plans to launch a hybrid version of every model in its range in a bid to reduce its fleet average co2 emissions.

With a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV already on sale, Porsche’s next step will be the introduction of a hybrid Panamera in 2011. ( above photo )

The Panamera will borrow the hybrid hardware found in the current Cayenne S Hybrid. That means it will sport a 329-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a 46 hp electric motor. Like the Cayenne S Hybrid, the Panamera’s parallel hybrid setup boasts the ability to operate at low speeds under electric power alone.

Porsches’s first hybrid sports car ( above photo ), the 918 Spyder, has already been confirmed for production and its development will help dictate how Porsche puts more mainstream electric and hybrid sports cars into production in the future.

The mid-engined two-seater achieves headline figures of 78mpg and 70g/km of CO2. It hits 62mph from a standstill in 3.2sec and can go on to reach a top speed of 198mph.

The car is powered by a 500bhp V8 petrol engine – a development of the RS Spyder racer’s 3.4-litre unit – and a pair of electric motors with a combined output of 218bhp. The front wheels are driven by one electric motor and the rear wheels by the engine and the other motor, making the 918 Spyder four-wheel drive.

Porsche says the car is capable of a sub-7m30s lap around the Nurburgring, quicker than the Carrera GT.It is similar in length and height to the Boxster and Cayman, but is much wider than both of these. The body and shell are made from carbonfibre-reinforced plastic, but there is also extensive use of magnesium and aluminum. The concept weighs 1490kg.

The hybrid supercar may end up being priced at around $660,047 USD (£420,000) – surpassing the $504,464 (£321,000) Carrera GT.

When the production Panamera S Hybrid takes to the streets in 2011, it will become the company’s second model to sport a hybrid powertrain, a remarkable achievement considering that few people associate Porsche with fuel efficiency.

Ditch your car. Ride a pi.

Aug 5, 2010

marcus hays, founder and designer of pimobility, has hit on something pretty special with his electric-hybrid bike, the picycle.

The bright red, swooping frame immediately grabs your attention, and its statistics, like the fact that it produces zero-emissions, hooks you. The $3,000 – $5,000 price tag may put you off, and it’s certainly not for everyone, but when you consider that the yearly operating cost is almost nil, it ends up balancing out, saving you thousands that you would ordinarily spend on gas and maintenance for a car.

While it can’t boast the speed of a car, for getting around the city you couldn’t ask for a better ride. The Picycle reaches up to 30 mph (although the legal speed for electric bikes is 20 mph in most states) and runs for about 20 miles on a single charge. It uses a Lithion-ion battery, which is housed in the arcing aluminum frame, and takes only 2.5 hours to charge. You can ride it like a plain old bike, with electric-assist or completely under electric propulsion. Not having to pedal up a hill or in the heat means that if you’re someone who uses their bike to commute to and from work, no more arriving to work in a sweat-soaked dress shirt. And for the weekend joy-ride or trip to the beach, there’s no more sitting in traffic or stopping to tank up.

Pi electric bikes price: $2,999 to $4,999.

Sugar volt. Flying in the future will be sweet.

Aug 4, 2010

“buzzzzzzzzz” is the speculative noise generated by the SUGAR volt electric airliner.

Conceptually, that is. Chicago-based Boeing announced plans that they’ve begun work on their idea to design and create an electric-running commercial aircraft. This news was released at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual AirVenture airshow, which came to a close on Sunday in Oskosh, Wisconsin.

The goal is green efficient flight: to have an aircraft that is not only saving energy by running primarily on battery power (jet fuel may be necessary for take off and climbing, the parts of flight that require the most oomph), but is also cutting down on environmentally harmful emissions and noise. A report by the Vancouver Sun said that aerospace researchers believe it might be possible to have such an airplane fully running by about 2035.

In the same report, Jack Langelaan, a Penn State assistant professor is quoted as saying, “The concept is winnable. The engineering still needs to get done.”

SUGAR is short for “Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research”, which was born out of a NASA research project. According to Aero Gizmo the SUGAR volt aircraft is a twin-engine design,”notable for its trussed, elongated wings and electric battery gas turbine hybrid propulsion system – a system designed to reduce fuel burn by more than 70 percent and total energy use by 55 percent.”

A major hurdle in further advancement of this technology is improving the amount of power a battery can store for a given weight, ensuring that it can safely propel and sustain an airplane for the duration of its flight.

Mark Moore, a conceptual design expert at NASA, says that electric propulsion will be a “game changer.” However, we’ll be watching to see how this concept takes flight over the next 20-30 years, likely beginning with a smaller, personal commuter aircraft. Until then, flying just won’t be as sweet.

Audi A1. 3-door.

Apr 21, 2009

a1-3
Expect the minicar segment is to explode, with new models planned from most major carmakers including, for the first time, premium labels such as Audi. While most will be budget versions Audi will be launching an upmarket model aimed at the Mini Cooper and a possible BMW version.
Audi’s new model will be based on the A1 Metroproject and subsequent A1 Sportback concept vehicles, and will be available in several variants including three and five-door hatchbacks, a sleek sportback and possibly a cabrio.

This latest rendering gives us an accurate look at what to expect for the entry-level three-door hatch, revealing designers will be sticking to the lines of the concept car. Some of the elements from the show cars that are unlikely to make production include the exposed aluminum arches, 18in alloys and LED headlights.

The A1 will share its platform with the new 2010 Volkswagen Polo and will be available as standard with FWD, though there will be performance models with quattro AWD. The new platform also means the A1 will be available with VW Group’s new low-cost DSG with seven gears in total.

Engine options will range from a series of low capacity TSI and TDI units ranging from 1.4 to 2.0L, and a new mild hybrid model may also be offered. The design will use a small electric motor integrated into the drivetrain, which kicks in during high-load situations. The full hybrid system with lithium-ion batteries as previewed by the Metroproject Concept is unlikely to enter production.

The five-door model should debut around the middle of next year and will be followed by the three-door shortly after.

e-Bikes are big with the elderly, eco-friendly, and commuters who disdain sweat. Favored by the elderly may explain the design of the majority of these bikes. Favored by “everyone” else we assume is bike #9. Maybe it’s because the bike was designed by a designer, Marcus Hays, to please himself. You get what you pay for with this group. Light weight, power, styling adds to the bottom line cost.

The fuel efficiency makes it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the world. The name Aptera is Greek for “wingless,” a nod to their light-aircraft-inspired design and construction techniques.

The Aptera 2 Series will be a two seat, three wheeled passenger vehicle. It is planned to be available in both all-electric (2e) and series hybrid (2h) configurations, at prices ranging from mid-twenty to mid-forty thousand dollars. Aerodynamic optimization using simulations and light-weight composite construction yields a vehicle which consumes only 80 Wh/mi at 55 mph (89 km/h), about half the energy needed to propel the EV1. On the battery electric model, this means a 120-mile (190 km) range on 10 kWh of electricity, or around 340 mpg price equivalent. On the hybrid vehicle, it leads to projections of 130 mpg on gasoline alone, or 300 mpg if plugged in every 120 miles (190 km).

Some 4,000 people have put down a refundable $500 deposit to get one. Delivery first all-electric units to customers in October 2009, and the first hybrids in 2010.
