For the period encompassing the London Design Festival and Frieze Art Fair, Gallery Libby Sellers is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Peter Marigold’s Wooden Tables series.
Born in London in 1974, Marigold first studied sculpture at Central St Martins before enrolling in Design Products under Ron Arad at the Royal College of Art in 2004. Marigold’s fine art training, combined with a series of jobs in scenographic design and production – props, models, costumes and sets for theatre and exhibitions – has led to a pluralistic and resourceful approach to furniture design. Designing and making beautiful objects simply and sincerely – often through improvisation and the logic of geometry – is a major impetus for Marigold. Springing from a desire to elucidate and amplify the rationality found in the natural world, much of his work has been an exploration of the phenomena of nature’s form.

The tables relate to a much larger story that Marigold began in 2011 with the Wooden Forms. Through these he made a series of vessels using a single small piece of wood as a mould. The process sees one piece of wood pasted with hot wax in order to create an impression of the wood. This action is repeated so as to intuitively build up a form from the numerable wax impressions, creating an object that is both moulded, yet unique. The wax form is then cast into a final sturdier material through one singular movement. As Marigold has said, “The end result is an amalgam of moments. The forms are ‘wooden’ in that they have been created using wood rather than being made of wood. They therefore reference wood as an active verb rather than a monumental noun; the resulting textures are highly animated and not ‘wooden’ at all.”

Please don’t miss your chance to visit the stunning exhibition ‘8 Chairs‘ by Clarke & Reilly at Gallery Libby Sellers, closing on Friday, April 26th. The poetic travelogue details the plight and fate of eight specially sourced chairs as they made their way from the designers’ studio, to Peckham then California, and back to London again.
Describing their style as ‘unashamedly romantic and tirelessly imaginative’, Clarke & Reilly are known for applying an original persepctive to ‘lost’ pieces of furniture using narrative, historical knowledge, craftsmanship and a rarified sense of colour to redefine the work. ‘8 Chairs’ exemplifies this reverent attitude towards design as each of the chairs, selected to represent a specific character in the artists’ minds, has been reinvented, often using period and bespoke fabrics. The redefined forms were then installed on the rooftop of a Peckham building to weather the icy winter before being transported to the scorching Californian desert of 99 Palms. The consequences of such extremes, all documented through film and photography, are displayed in the Gallery. On their return, each chair underwent their own final process, informed by their individual response to the whole experience.
Clarke & Reilly – otherwise known as David Grocott and Bridget Dwyer (b. 1964, 1967) – have been collaborating as an artist duo since 2005. Bringing together their backgrounds in fashion (Dwyer) and antique furniture (Grocott), they create unique objects that convey their nostalgic and slightly eccentric aesthetic. Their works are in collections worldwide, and they recently exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time. They currently live between London and Los Angeles.
To complement the experiential nature of the exhibition, and to try to capture the extreme conditions endured by the chairs, Clarke & Reilly have worked with leading perfumer Azzi Glasser to create a signature scent for the exhibition. In researching the base notes for her scent, Glasser drew heavily on the project information given to her by the designers but she also spent time with the chairs on their return to London – getting an understanding of the environments in which they had been placed and the consequences these locations had on the fabric, smell and structure of each chair. Such partnerships and emphasis on the sensorial side of our built environment are essential to Clarke & Reilly. All works are available for sale through Gallery Libby Sellers.

Initially conceived in collaboration with luxury goods house Fendi for Design Miami/Basel 2012, Craftica is a visual and tactile investigation into the diversity and origins of leather through a collection of handmade stools, lights, vessels and tools.
As Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi, the Italian-born duo behind Formafantasma, have said, “the design is driven by the symbolic connotations of leather, a material that, more than any other, represents the complex relationship between humans and nature. Leather has the ability to evoke almost ancestral memories of when nature was hunted to produce food, tools and protection for the body. Searching underneath and above the sea, from the vegetal to the animal world, the installation offers a holistic view on leather as a material.”
In creating the series, Formafantasma merged their own willful primitivism with Fendi’s time-honoured craftsmanship and rich material resources. Alongside traditional leathers, the works have been made from vegetal dried fish skins (sourced from a food factory in Iceland), oxidized metal, glass, wood and other natural materials such as bones, shells and cow bladders. The resulting effect is a tactile, pre-industrial and glamorous range that Silvia Fendi has described as “experimentation at its best.”
A selection from Formafantasma’s earlier works, including Botanica, Moulding Tradition and Colony will also be on view. All pieces will be available to purchase exclusively through the gallery.

Gallery Libby Sellers is showing a series of hand woven carpet designs by the French art and design duo M/M (Paris). Each in an edition of 12 +2 APs, the four carpets act like a condensed catalogue – or Carpetalogue – for M/M’s practice.
Michaël Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak originally established M/M (Paris) as a graphic design studio in 1992. Their close associations with the music, fashion and art worlds have led to their becoming one of the most distinctive and acclaimed creative voices of their generation, within graphic design and beyond. Their longstanding creative clients and collaborators include fashion designers Yohji Yamamoto, Givenchy and Balenciaga; musicians such as Björk, Madonna, The Micronauts and Kanye West; and artists including Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Sarah Morris, and Philippe Parreno + Pierre Huyghe, with whom they also designed the Etienne Marcel Café in Paris in 2001. M/M’s work is held in the public collections of Tate Modern in London, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
The gallery is also hosting a special M/M (Paris) pop-up shop stocking a curated selection of their other works, including their new book, M to M of M/M (Paris), written by Emily King, designed by Graphic Thought Facility, with a foreword by Hans Ulrich Obrist and published by Thames & Hudson. We are one of the few stockists of this book right now, so best place your orders early.
