spazio rossana orlandi. milan design week 2016.

Apr 29, 2016

the doyenne of design gathers talent new and established in her eponymous spazio rossana orlandi.

spazio rossana orlandi, a former tie factory on via matteo bandello in the magenta neighborhood of milan, is part design-shop, part gallery, part sun-dappled courtyard café, curated by the eponymous doyenne of design. orlandi is known, not only for her trademark specs (pictured above and now available to buy in the shop), but for her ability to spot the stars of the future at the very beginning of their careers. every year for milan design week, the space is filled with a combination of new talent and the big names she’s supported from day one, making it a must-see destination.

below> this sculptural piece showing the transition from tree to wooden designed object is by desiree mejer, part of design collective von pelt. the collective celebrates its members’ varied talents and provenance, saying, “most are self taught or come from a different discipline and location, such as graphic design and poetry from london and spain, artist sculptors from berlin, and italian textile researchers and craftsmen.” mejer was born in spain, now lives in london and is a fashion designer by trade, having launched fake london in 1997.

below> dutch designer floris wubben has been turning ceramic techniques on their heads since his extrusion machine made ceramic vases by forcing clay through templates like play-doh. his latest collection involves removing layers of glaze with a blowtorch between firings.

some of his experimental extruded pots have now made it into production and are available for sale in the rossana orlandi shop.

below> light in time was a stunning installation by moritz waldemeyer for sports watchmaker panera. “the creation of the artist comes to life through an interplay of light and material,” said a statement from the brand, and the sun-lit location proved them right. the iridescent petrol-lie color turned out to be one of the key color trends in milan.

umzikim and kyuhyung cho designed the robbot shelf in response to their concerns about the future – limited natural resources and the impact of artificial intelligence. “however, no matter what comes our way, we’ll never give up on creating breathtaking moments, because our aesthetic capabilities and imaginations are what make us human,” they say. the robbot shelf enables users to create their own combination of modular components to make something that meets their needs and reflects their personalities.

below> the handmade atacama vase by josefina munoz and peter fink was part of an exhibition entitled i dream of luxury curated by nov gallery after an open call to emerging swiss designers to interpret the concept of luxury for the future. munoz and fink encapsulated their collection in the phrase: “i dream of perfect flaws.”

another piece in the same exhibition was volutes, a fragrance dispenser made of ratten, brass and glass by anouk eva-meyer. “i dream of scent as a memory” was the phrase given by the designer to explain her work. ratten and brass were also two key materials seen right across milan design week this year.

below> jacks-up by sungjun kim is a stool made entirely of turned poplar wood legs, inspired by the collective effort it took to raise the briggs hotel in downtown chicago in 1866. that year was the starting point for all the pieces in an exhibition by the school of the art institute of chicago (saic)’s whatnot studio, to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary.

below> other pieces in the exhibition included the oil lamp with light diffuser by ali keshmiri – an oil lamp designed to focus attention on the flame; and allele by shau heng li – a stapled plywood table (staples and plywood were both commercialized in 1866), inspired by mendel’s law in which functional elements mutate into decorative abnormalities.

the poltrona frau group introduces four of their 2016 salone del mobile offerings:

above> embroidery chair | johan lindsten | cappellini | 2016
the four seasons are the characters of embroidery chair series by johan lindsten. expressing the encounter between the embroidery tradition passed down through generations and next-generation industrial technology, these four chairs with ash wood body and backrests with cross-stitch embroidery on tapestry wool depict painterly landscape scenes drawn from the essence of the four seasons. colors change together with seasons from the ash stained walnut shell of autumn to the white ash of spring, from the black stained ash of winter to the red stained ash of summer.

below> utrecht chair | gerrit t. rietveld | 1935 // boxblocks | bertjan pot | cassina | 2016
the artist bertjan pot has designed an exclusive bespoke textile in three jacquard versions for the utrecht armchair giving a contemporary twist to this icon by gerrit t. rietveld. the architecture of the armchair is reflected in the innovative workmanship of the boxblocks fabric which is made up of 8 colored threads mixed 2 at a time to create 19 different colors on a template which outlines the shape of the armchair. carried out with an advanced computer controlled jacquard weaving machine. the result is a unique and perfectly balanced geometric pattern in which the combination of triangles is never repeated. a homage to dutch creativity, each unique boxblocks version fits 90 limited edition pieces like a tailor-made dress, for a total of 270 models, which are progressively numbered to guarantee the cassina mark of authenticity. the utrecht armchair was designed in 1935 and has been exclusively produced by cassina since 1988.

“my concepts are never single lined or step by step but they are always a meeting point of different ideas and feelings.
for the boxblocks textile of the utrecht it was important for me to do something today that was not technically possible at the time of the armchair’s creation.
the pattern is inspired by the modernist ‘block-sculptural’ shape of the chair itself. when talking patterns there are generally two types, one is the pattern that respects the product and enhances its shape (think traditional tartan checks and stripes), the other is the pattern that crosses seams and dazzles its actual shape (think zebra stripes and large organic flower prints)… this one does both.”

below> lloyd | jean-marie massaud | poltrona frau | 2016
jean-marie massaud designs lloyd, a system of storage units and bookcases with variable geometries. thin vertical wooden rods create light grilles that run from top to bottom on invisible horizontal rails. each grille can be moved as desired to create sequences that are different each time. a fluctuating score of solids and voids, of light and shade. a sensual game that offers a glimpse of the contents, books and objects, without fully revealing them.

the most advanced technology is combined with traditional materials, wood and saddle leather, to form a solid and minimalist structure. the effect is almost intangible, transparent. the horizontal elements on which the grilles slide are made from hpl, a material which even in very thin layers guarantees stability and strength, with a natural oak veneer. the vertical uprights, in mdf covered with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather, are placed at regular intervals to give the piece of furniture rhythm and enhance the liberating effect of the grilles.

each individual grille is a painstaking piece of cabinetwork. the solid oak rods are cut in different thicknesses and then individually glued by hand. given the very reduced surfaces of the rods, the lead-colored dye is also applied by hand in several phases.

there is an infinite number of possible compositions. in the wall version the base is closed by mdf panels covered, like the uprights, with cuoio saddle or cuoio saddle extra leather. in the freestanding version, the mobile grilles run along both sides for an even more vibrant and chiaroscuro effect. in all variants the sides of the structure are closed by fixed grilles.

the lloyd can take the form of large bookcases or open storage units of various sizes. widths range from 225 to 280 cm, heights from 46 to 188 cm and its depth is 42.5 cm. the composition can rest on lead-colored solid oak stands or sit directly on the floor on steel feet with matt gunmetal grey finish.

mdw16-marni-ballhaus1

after looking for marni, the total theatre event that showcased its eyewear line, marni is exploring a different area of performing arts and is using dance to create a link between the new design collection and the traditions of colombia, the country that inspired it.

an invite to discover cumbia, an ancient colombian dance for couples that arose from a blend of diverse rhythms and cultures. marni has put its own individual slant on it, customising the traditional full circular skirts worn by cumbia dancers and the knotted scarves the men wear around their neck.

mdw16-marni-20

cumbia’s colorful choreography will form the backdrop for the presentation of marni’s new home furnishing accessories range, created exclusively for milan design week: chairs, chaise longues and rocking chairs sit alongside numerous small tables, lamps and vases made of metal, wood and hand-woven pvc cord in brilliant color combinations. the items on display have all been made in colombia by a group of women who have gained independence and freedom through work.
