[ curio ] is design miami/’s newest exhibition platform which invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. the program spans the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and emphasizes surprising installations of scientific and technological research alongside handcraft and creative production. the curios are interspersed amongst design miami/’s core galleries, infusing the fair’s exhibition program with inventive snapshots of today’s design landscape.
reconstruction: the action or process of reconstructing or being reconstructed; a thing that has been rebuilt after being damaged or destroyed; an impression, model, or reenactment of a past event.
malcolm james kutner offers designers, artists, and collectors a cabinet of curiosity in which they can rediscover and explore together the interplay of form and function, art and design, abstraction and extraction, intervention and representation across disciplinary boundaries.
re:construction also plays with time and space as it takes an academic approach in creating a transhistorical environment for design-minded prototypes that embraces a selection of works from postwar france to the present-day united states. french reconstruction furniture from rené gabriel, marcel gascoin, and gustave gautier sits alongside ceramic tables made in 2018 in collaboration with kutner and jean-baptiste bouvier. these pieces anchor textiles by bo joseph and laura kaufman, mirrors by maureen fullam and radisay/szarek, and a site-specific intervention by aleksandar duravcevic.
a dynamic collaboration among makers and collectors, this presentation accommodates makers’ preoccupation with creating functional forms and collectors’ fascination with telling aesthetic stories. re:construction not only energizes a cross-disciplinary design dialogue, it also expands our understanding and appreciation of simultaneously formal, intuitive, and malleable relationships.
re:construction is presented by malcolm james kutner with simone joseph, new york, and with special thanks to jean-baptiste bouvier, paris.

pieces from the objets nomades collection have been imagined by some of the most creative designers of our times: atelier oï, maarten baas, barber and osgerby, fernando and humberto campana, damien langlois-meurinne, raw edges, patricia urquiola, marcel wanders, tokujin yoshioka, nendo, gwenaël nicolas, india mahdavi, and andré fu.
louis vuitton les petits nomades consists of a new innovative and inventive collection of decorative objects from some of objets nomades’ designers. these smaller-scale objects are functional and beautiful interpretations of the house’s world of refi ned and inspiring design. with their mutual sense of intuitiveness, desirability, and pleasure, the objets nomades collections continue louis vuitton’s tradition of offering inspiring and surprising designs, anchored in evolving visions of travel.
maison perrier-jouët and design miami/ have collaborated for the past seven years to offer up-and-coming artists and designers visibility on an international platform. as part of this partnership, maison perrier-jouët commissions creative talents for their capacity to express the cultural heritage of the maison through the prism of the twenty-first century, as well as through their own unique identity.
creative liberty and unconventional observations of nature are an integral part of maison perrier-jouët’s history and are characteristic of art nouveau, to which the maison is closely linked. by delving into the heart of the maison, british designer bethan laura wood found an affinity with the art nouveau movement and was inspired by its architectural and decorative details and by the way artisanal treatments were applied to traditionally industrial materials. with hypernature, wood also draws a parallel between the transformative way art nouveau breathed beauty into everyday life and the meticulous work required to turn grapes into champagne.
wood’s extravagant vision of the world and her ability to evoke an array of emotions through her unique application of color make hypernature a vivid interpretation of the art of the wild, the universe as imagined by maison perrier-jouët to re-enchant life through the presence of vibrant, unbridled nature. echoing this nature, wood’s creation for maison perrier-jouët is free in form, intense in color, and radiant in its presence.
hypernature invites you to a unique, immersive champagne experience, where you can “pick” elements from the structure as you would pluck a grape from the vine. at the root of this tasting ritual, wood references the terroir of champagne and the savoir-faire of maison perrier-jouët. blurring the boundaries between art and design, wood’s practice establishes a dialogue among her work, the audience, and the wider world. through her travels she has observed “those crossover spaces between nature and manmade,” which she draws on to enrich her palettes, structure atypical forms, and refine her understanding of the cultural connotations of materials. these elements allow her to elevate the mundane into the extraordinary, an exercise in which she excels.
gallery all presents the world premierw of the my collection, a new body of work by the esteemed british hong kong product design studio, michael young. this new collection was commissioned by gallery all of los angeles and beijing and will be seen for the first time ever at the design miami 2018 fair. the exhibition will be on view from 5 december – 9 december 2018 at miami beach (meridian avenue & 19th street).
all the work in the collection will be composed of polished stainless steel with white enamel surfaces. each piece consists of a cluster of hollow metal extrusions capped at each end and covered with enamel.
“the concept came in two ways,” young says. a while back, i had worked with cloisonné in northern china and began to look at how patterns and colours came together and how metal could be shaped to create divisions of form. some of my earlier attempts were inspired by oil on water and the natural patterns generated by this when taken in a snapshot. for gallery all , we looked at these in a new way by self-generating forms created by the computer and then extracted in two-dimensional slices to take the pattern from.”
“we had designed various functional forms into seating, consoles and tables,” he says. “next we applied these patterns so they would then be twisted into 3 dimensions and extruded vertically. in production you cannot colour the vertical surfaces of the pieces, so we played with making a stunning polished edge ”
“the metal is moulded around huge clay forms, and the internal structure is created over several weeks. it is completely artisanal, and there is no other way to produce this than with historical methods combined with contemporary craft techniques”
