from 24 march to 26 may, southern guild’s cape town gallery will come alive with over 100 thought-provoking sculptures and paintings by renowned french assemblage artist philippe bousquet. philippe, who has lived in johannesburg for close to 13 years, and is known for his intricately constructed jewel-like sculptures, will introduce new directions in his work, including portraiture, fine art and larger-scale structures. the solo show, titled between dusk and dawn, presents the artist’s intellectual foray into the space between these two states. ‘when it’s not dark, it’s not light,’ he explains of the title that alludes to the ideas of harmony and balance, in opposition to life’s extreme constructs.
between dusk and dawn invites audiences to look beyond what they would normally see, and to search for meaning within the grey areas, because, as the artist views it, ‘truth is not real, it’s an individual concept of life’. each piece, made from found objects and waste materials, in the traditional spirit of assemblage, tells a story that is open to interpretation based on personal experience, religious views, political leanings and social commentary. ‘it’s my way of telling stories about how i see people and the world,’ philippe says. ‘each story has more than one side to it, and will be received differently by each person.’
over the past 20 years, there has been an evolution of many middle eastern cities. abu dhabi is one of them – developing economically, expanding socially and growing culturally. in its ongoing construction state, erecting new landmarks amidst old buldings, modernity is paving its path and showing that dreams are becoming reality. capture illustrates this specific moment in time.

celebrating a year since the inauguration of the new carpenters workshop gallery in new york, the gallery will hold ‘origins’ a retrospective of ingrid donat’s work.
the exhibition coincides with the launch of a monograph dedicated to the artist’s work. this is the first in-depth study of ingrid donat, and it is written by acclaimed decorative arts author anne bony with the input of renowned interior designer peter marino. the monograph takes a look at the last 30 years of the artist’s career as it explores an analytical perspective of her series including her most recent work.
in this long-awaited exhibition, the gallery will unveil new works by ingrid donat as well as showcase pieces that demonstrate the evolution of her work over her 30 year career.
ingrid donat became interested in sculpture during her foundation studies at paris école des beaux arts. at the time, she was side-tracked by the responsibilities of motherhood, and it seemed impossible to juggle both. yet, it was not long before she saw her artistic tendencies as a feasible career choice.
ingrid donat was always creating; she first made lamps as presents for friends and family before eventually creating larger pieces of furniture for the house. when her children were older, a friend encouraged her to sell these works. it was the overwhelming response from this first sale that convinced her that she could turn this talent into a career.
over these first three decades of her career ingrid donat committed herself to continuous technical improvement, material sourcing and historical research into the artists and designers who inspired her. this exhibition will show the variation in her sculptural designs and the wide range of materials and techniques that are employed in her oeuvre.
luminous cocoons
carpenters workshop gallery | paris is pleased to announce the spanish artist nacho carbonell and his solo exhibition ‘forest’ in the marais space this upcoming fall.
after the solo exhibition’s success last year in london, the gallery will be showcasing a selection of carbonell’s lamp sculptures from his ‘cocoon’ series including new works such as his ‘floor lamp concrete base’ range in central paris. created in collaboration with the gallery and produced using a unique form of plaster invented by the artist, the works incorporate sand and textile hardener which is then set around a steel frame.
organic fantasies
skillfully handcrafted, the ‘cocoon’ lamp series is a culmination of unique pieces. the works are organically-shaped, semi-transparent cocoons, varying in form, fitted around loosely structured sand-colored mesh, illuminating from the inside so that the light diffuses, producing a natural warm glow.
each one different from the other by varying in colours, shape and size, the series includes several floor lamps as well as four hybrid works called ‘table cocoons’. these pieces act as both lamps as well as tables encapsulating the imaginative and playful essence of nacho carbonell.

galerie michel rein is proud to present the third solo show of didier fiúza faustino from 20 october to 17 december 2016.
we know that, with this artist, the said barrier is capable of great contortions which further aggravate the discomfort of the on straddling in this way. the theme of the exhibition my crafts is very precisely that of uncertain seating and denied commodities. ten works made over the last sixteen years, which we have difficulty calling “chairs” as they mishandle not only our bodies but also and foremost the categories established by design theorists and other decorative art specialists. ten works to be further considered as milestones in faustino’s work, formations which appeared during his spatial work and were then integrated into this or that installation or associated with this or that building site.
