the 2020 59th edition of the salone del mobile.milano has been suspended. the 60th edition will now take place from 13th to 18th april 2021. the decision to postpone was made by the board of the salone del mobile.milano in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that is spreading to almost every country in the world.
the situation that led to the original change of date from april to june, announced on 25th february, has fundamentally changed. although we were determined to keep to the june date, to allow the annual event to take place as planned, the present, unprecedented circumstances and medium-term uncertainties now mean that this year’s salone can no longer go ahead.
the 2021 edition, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the salone, will be a special event for the entire sector. for the first time ever, all the biennial exhibitions will be held in conjunction with the salone internazionale del mobile, the international furnishing accessories exhibition, workplace3.0, s.project and salonesatellite. this means that eurocucina, ftk (technology for the kitchen) and the international bathroom exhibition will also take place next year, along with euroluce, which was already scheduled for 2021.
this single, great sector-wide trade fair will represent a fresh opportunity to pull together to revitalize our businesses, the entire supply chain that works in synergy with the salone, and milan.

considerate design: in response to the brompton’s nature/nurture theme for 2019, contemporary design and craft gallery mintdisplays the work of 60 designers – both new talents and established names – all chosen for their dedication to respecting nature and minimizing human impact on the environment. from lighting made from found wood to sculptural examinations of typography, the works are all exemplars of sustainability-focused, circular design. in ‘coal: post-fuel’, for example, jesper eriksson seeks to recontextualize a functional fossil fuel, finding a new purpose and value for the notorious pollutant as a beautiful design material, as precious as marble.

camille walala returns to london design festival in a characteristically colorful manner. the french-born designer has been commissioned by grosvenor britain & ireland to energize and enliven south molton street, in the heart of london’s west end, with a bold and beautiful family of street furniture.
combining head-turning color and geometric shapes in monumental proportions, the result is walala lounge, a set of 10 sculptural benches, accompanied by planters – some freestanding and some integrated into the structure of the benches – and a series of oversized flags that will be strung, bunting-style, from shopfront to shopfront, converting the area into an immersive corridor of color.
fully pedestrianized and lined with british and international boutiques and cafes, south molton street will be transformed into a place to pause.
walala’s vision is to create an open-air urban living room – a place for people to come together to chat and relax in central london – with a burst of color and irrepressible joy. the walala lounge will comprise an unpredictable array of cuboids, cylinders and arches made from brushed steel and tricoya® mdf, while a number of the designs incorporate planters and rug-like bases to enhance their engaging, home-like appeal.
as 3d sculptural objects, the benches and flags mark walala’s continuing evolution from two to three dimensions – a process which began in 2017 when she created villa walala in exchange square, broadgate as a landmark project for the festival, that took the form of a playful castle installation constructed from soft vinyl building blocks.

the eighth annual chicago design week — seven days worth of programming and events dedicated to a close examination of the fluid and evolving state of design and the role it plays in society.
design and the role it plays, like the world around us, is in a constant state of motion. as the world around us evolves at an ever-quickening pace, design is becoming an increasingly fluid pursuit. regardless of discipline or focus, today’s practitioners are tasked with navigating an increasingly complex, shifting landscape. the definition of design is evolving away from traditional notions of craft towards something much broader: designers craft strategies rather than static artifacts; nimble and evolving systems rather than codified toolkits. design as an output is viewed by a growing global audience as a critical tool for helping society come to terms with the complexities that surround us.
the chicago design week programming committee is a joint partnership between members of aiga chicago, chicago design museum, the society of typographic arts, and mas context will review all proposals for inclusion in the official chicago design week programming slate.
