18 December 2012 is young professionals application day: red dot grants free participation for up-and-coming designers!
At the “red dot award: product design 2013“, creative talents have once again the chance to prove their design skills and to compete with renowned designers from all over the world. On 18 December 2012, they have 24 hours to apply for one out of 50 free participations.
In order to enable students and young professionals to successfully participate in the red dot design award, the programme “red dot young professionals”, through which the competition especially supports new- and upcomers, was brought into being. Its aim is to provide creative young professionals a successful start into the world of design and to make access to the industry easier for new talents.
Within the “red dot award: product design”, students as well as first-time employees can compete with established and renowned product designers, such as Sir James Dyson and Paul Flowers, to name but a few. Especially young people have fresh ideas and produce outstanding design achievements. The “red dot young professionals” programme is their chance to gain recognition and to communicate their successes. Therefore, the participation in the competition is a great opportunity to strengthen the trust of potential clients in the creative achievement of young talents.
In 2012, more than 200 creative minds from 42 countries grabbed their chance and applied for the 50 free participations within 24 hours. This way, designers from Thailand, Indonesia or Belarus for instance, were able to present their products to the independent red dot jury.
Besides the free participation, the up-and–coming designers are, in case of a distinction, supported with an extensive winner’s package. It does not only include the use of the red dot label for the awarded product but also its presentation in the red dot design museum, as well as in the online exhibition. In addition, the winners of the quality seal will be introduced in the red dot design yearbook, the standard work for contemporary design.
In the “red dot award: product design 2012”, 17 talents benefitted from the advantages provided by the programme. Among them Mathias Hahn, the first young professional who accomplished the feat of winning a “red dot: best of the best”. This is the highest single accolade in the competition and is only awarded to products which convince the expert jury with groundbreaking design of the highest quality. The talented designer from Great Britain fascinated the jurors with the innovative form language of his floor- and table light “Jinn”, which is produced by Slovenian manufacturer Vertigo Bird d.o.o.
This year the young professionals application day will take place on 18 December 2012: On this day, designers who have obtained their academic qualifications within the past five years, have 24 hours to apply via the red dot website for one out of the 50 free registrations. The participants of this promotion will be drawn randomly in order to ensure that places are allocated fairly.

Paris is famous for its thin barebones park chair, seen in the Tuileries and other public gardens. Now, in an effort to look at designing a chair for public spaces in New York comes the NYChair Charrette Lab.
It assembled on Saturday at First Park, on the Lower East Side of the city at 33 East First Street, site of last year’s BMW Guggenheim urban ideas pavilion.
The creation of Laetitia Wolff of Futureflair and Silva Ajemian, the event included presentations by desigNYC’s Michael Piper of DUB-studios and Evan Bennett of VAMOS Architects.
Kids and adults assembled in groups and came up with ideas that will be judged by officials: Celia Petersen, Parks & Recreation capital projects division; Emily Weidenhof, Public Spaces, DOT Division of Traffic & Planning; Gail Wittwer-Laird, Capital Projects Division for New York City Parks. Stay tuned for the announcement of winners in mid-August.

Just in: Essen/Stuttgart. Style Porsche design team has been awarded as the ”red dot: design team of the year 2012.” Chief designer Michael Mauer and his team of 80 have been dedicated to the task of sustaining and advancing the Porsche identity across all model ranges since 2004. With the new Porsche 911 Carrera, the design team has triumphed in carrying forward the success story of the 911, which has spanned a period of nearly 50 years up to now. For this, the design icon was already awarded the “red dot: best of the best 2012” this year.
“That we won both of these most renowned awards this year makes me and my team proud indeed. It means we pursue the right design philosophy. With our work, we have ensured that a Porsche has always been a signature Porsche for many decades – from the 911 up to the Cayenne. The quality of our design is founded on our brand values: tradition and innovation, sportiness and suitability for everyday driving. This unique combination and the conviction that good design has to be honest, functional and timeless constitute the foundation of our characteristic Porsche design language,” says Michael Mauer, Director Style Porsche.
Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot design award, explained the decision to bestow the honorary title to Style Porsche: “The Porsche 911, like no other sports car, actually like no other vehicle as such, stands for tradition and innovation in the finest and truly symbiotic sense.” The team of Style Porsche, he said, realizes this balance to perfection, creating a profound product identity. “Even beyond the 911, Porsche has continually done great things. The successful introduction of the new generations of the Boxster and the Cayenne, as well as the launch of the outstanding Panamera, are product coups without precedent.”

The Porsche 911 is 49 years old. For just the seventh time since 1963, changes to the 911 aren’t merely evolutionary. It’s total re-engineering based on a new platform that is lighter and allows a new level of dynamics. Porsche released a video about redesigning the 911. “What we as designers are striving to above all is to optimize the width to height ratio with the result that although the 911’s width has not increased, the front axle area has become wider, and we’ve managed to make the roof a bit lower.”
