the salon art + design 2015.

Nov 12, 2015

the success of [ the salon ] lies in the quality of the 55 exhibiting galleries, the extremely international flavor of the material, and this eclecticism that is highly sought by today’s collectors and influencers. up until expo chicago this past september, the salon could claim other fairs allow art, but no design or conversely design without art. the organizers’ willingness to consider all material—historic to contemporary—is predicated on the belief that today’s designers and collectors insist on a vibrant mix—as long as the quality is impeccable.

port city talks. istanbul. antwerp. europalia turkey 2015.

port city talks. istanbul. antwerp. europalia turkey 2015.

Nov 6, 2015

MAS_Europalia_A2_5.indd

Port City Talks. Istanbul. Antwerp., a major exhibition of the Europalia Turkey international arts festival – 23 October 2015 > 24 January 2016 – is now open at the MAS museum in Antwerp. Curated by Turkish architect Murat Tabanlıoğlu, Port City Talks is an inspiring journey through the Bosporus via original film and photo works created by contemporary artists. Combined with archaeological treasures, the series of works tell the story of how water has shaped Istanbul and its people, drawing comparisons with Antwerp, both cosmopolitan trade hubs.

Nestled between two continents, Asia and Europe, Istanbul’s port has served as gateway to the East for centuries. Antwerp, meanwhile, developed from a port city by a river into a world-class port, has become a gateway to the rest of the world. As well as being active trading cities for centuries, with great political significance, they also have a rich past and multicultural values.

Port City Talks explores what a port and the presence of water means for the two cities, with a focus on Istanbul today. Curator Murat Tabanlıoğlu worked with 14 artists to create multimedia installations which reflect their view on modern Istanbul. The works are enriched with a selection of historical and archaeological objects, loaned from several museums and private collections, including findings from Yenikapı, Istanbul’s oldest harbor.
Through scenography made by Tabanlıoğlu Architects, the exhibition encourages visitors to create their own visual journey through a maze of interconnected walled spaces and tunnels that lead to hidden patios. The works, such as playful video portraits and digital maps featuring real time shipping data, offer a close look at the docks, cranes, shipyards, bridges, tunnels, and people.

Building on his experience as curator of Places of Memory, the Turkish pavilion at the biennial International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2014, Murat Tabanlıoğlu says, “Through studying the history and today’s realities of both cities’ ports, we have discovered certain parallels, although it is obvious that both cities are unique and, indeed, far from being similar. So we decided to call the exhibition Port City Talks. Istanbul. Antwerp., seeing this occasion as a joyous opportunity to highlight diversities and the role of people-to-people contact, respecting differences rather than always searching for similarities, and thus, multiplying the reasons for talking with each other.
“I hope this exhibition will be a motivation for further ‘talks’ on the transformation of cities, architecture and our lives.”

golden waters light installation by grimanesa amorós.

golden waters light installation by grimanesa amorós.

Aug 15, 2015

Golden Waters, a temporary light installation by artist Grimanesa Amorós, which extends from the famous Soleri Bridge, is on view now until September 30, 2015. Scottsdale Public Art, a leader of defining art in the public realm, is the sponsor of the installation.

Amoros_Golden_Waters_04
Inspired by and reflecting the natural elegance of the Arizona canal, a nearly fifty mile long body of water that runs through Scottsdale, Golden Waters is mounted on a secure structure attached to the bridge, designed by artist, architect and philosopher Paolo Soleri. The hovering light sculpture extends parallel to the canal channel eighty feet west of the bridge. Golden Waters’ LED tubing system appears to rise from the canal waters below, celebrating the union of light and water.

Amoros_Golden_Waters_03

Amoros_Golden_Waters_02
The vertical and horizontal lines of the installation are a metaphor for the dynamic balance between urban and natural forces that can be experienced simultaneously. Golden Waters hopes to engage the viewer by emphasizing a unique perspective on nature and landscape.

[ grimanesa amorós ]
Grimanesa Amorós was born in Lima, Peru and lives and works in New York City. She is a multidisciplinary artist with diverse interests in the fields of social history, scientific research and critical theory, which have greatly influenced her work.
Amorós researches the locations, histories and communities of the installation sites. Her process remains organic and instinctive. This intuitive relationship to technology is a distinctive feature of Amorós’ practice. Her works incorporates elements from sculpture, video, lighting, and technology to create site-specific installations to engage architecture and create community.Grimanesa Amorós has often drawn upon important Peruvian cultural legacies for inspiration for her large-scale light- based installations, which she has presented around the globe from Mexico, Tel Aviv and Beijing to New York’s Times Square. She continues to be inspired from Peru’s history for her art but she does not hold an essentialist or nostalgic view of her subject. She often gives talks at museums, foundations and universities where her lectures not only attract future artists but students and faculty engaged with science and technology. It feels somewhere in the art of Grimanesa Amorós, the past is meeting the future. Amorós has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Latin America.

Expo chicago 2012. Day three.

Sep 23, 2012

unidentified bear greets visitors at kavi gupta gallery | click > enlarge

Day three DesignApplause returns to see what we missed at the preview and find many more “objects” than anticipated. And we run into many many people, lose an iPad (found and returned in 20 minutes) by the [ Yancy Richardson Gallery (New York) ] THANK YOU! Truth be told, the early expectations of design galleries in this exposition were dashed when we learned the focus would be on art only in 2012. But we understand the demands of an inaugural event offers up but two choices, quantity or quality. Cardi Black Box (Milan) did, however, bring a liquid trilobal table by Ross Lovegrove. THANK YOU!

Ask 120 galleries (we didn’t) how were the first three days and you would get 120 opinions. The dealers we did ask (galleries who brought “objects”) were in agreement that Thursday (day one) and Friday was not all that busy, but day three was very busy and lot of art was sold. The galleries were split on who realized brisk sales. Our “objects” galleries were eager to share what they brought and the manner of sharing was diverse. Price for example. A few did not want us to publish the price. Anthony Meier Fine Arts (San Francisco) on the other hand when we we’re photographing Dave Muller’s FlyFlyFly shouts out “that’s $100,000”.

Unfortunately, for this post [ Weinstein Gallery (Minneapolis) ] was not showing any beloved objects. The gallery is expecting an inquiry on their art but the question is: who made your desk and chairs? Is it art? Was it done by a designer? Desk and chairs were custom made for the gallery by Bob Lindell of Artserve. Artserve is a fine art technical service which makes picture frames for them.

It is very sad to learn that Green Gallery in Milwaukee closed as a result of a fire in July 2012. Many things can be replaced after a fire. Art is not one of them. [ green gallery ] [ fire details ]

oil spill #20 2010 | daniel beltra | catherine edelman gallery

Oil Spill is not an “object” but it supports our environmental/sustainable messaging. This is just one of a series of Daniel Beltra’s photos on the oil spill.

The above photo taken from the Collector’s Lounge where we enjoy the view and a glass of wine as we shut down our visit for the day. The lakefront along with the incredibly accommodating clouds reminds us why everyone missed Navy Pier. Lastly, a link to the [ kate werble gallery (New York) ] as the image we took is terrible. Our [ Preview ] post and day three have captured over 50 inspiring objects. Galleries: THANK YOU!
