household waste drives nendo design of n02 recycle chair for fritz hansen.

Nov 8, 2019

household waste redesigned – introducing the n02™ recycle chair from fritz hansen. n02™ recycle is a new, all-purpose chair from fritz hansen made of upcycled plastic, household waste – it is our first chair produced in colored, recycled polypropylene.

the chair is fritz hansen’s first move towards creating a chair for the circular economy, as it is made from recycled plastic and can be recycled again at the end of its life.

the strong, stackable chair is designed in collaboration with japanese studio nendo and inspired by a simple crease of paper on the designer’s work table. the folded paper translated into a crease in the chair’s shell that makes the design support the sitter’s upper and lower back.

the chair’s elegant shell is made of circular plastic, meaning it is made of recycled plastic that can be recycled again if necessary. the plastic used for n02™ recycle comes from household, plastic waste collected, processed and upcycled in central europe, reducing transportation.

7 shell color options are inspired by earthy, warm tones in scandinavian nature. these colors and multiple leg options make n02™ recycle a strong solution for dining rooms, home offices, meeting rooms or as extra, multi-purpose seating. the wipeable, plastic shell is child-friendly and very easy to clean.

“we wanted to do a versatile, plastic, stacking chair in recycled materials. collaborating with studio nendo meant the design would be simple and elegant, a really nice blend of scandinavian and japanese aesthetics,” says christian andresen, head of design at fritz hansen.

“n02™ recycle can also be considered a statement of intent from fritz hansen. we have developed extensive knowledge and experience creating beautiful, well designed stacking chairs such as the iconic series 7™ and ant™. the n02™ recycle is the latest chair design in that tradition. it was not easy to create a recycled and recyclable chair that meets fritz hansen’s quality standards, but the result was worth all the experiments and hours spent brainstorming,” he added.

“the fact that the material is constructed from everyday recycled plastic creates an extra connection between the user and the chair. it’s an accessible design made for everyday use and made from everyday recycled, household plastics,” says oki sato of nendo. (below)

7 cool architects for fritz hansen.

60 years ago Arne Jacobsen designed the Series 7.

The cooperation between Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. But in 1952 the break-through came with the Ant. It was succeeded by the Series 7 in 1955. This propelled his and Fritz Hansen‘s names into furniture history.

Series 7, more specifically the Model 3107 Chair, was very unlike his other designs in that he did not design ‘7’ for one specific project – like he did with the Ant chair to the canteen of Novo Nordisk in Denmark or the Oxford chair to St Cathrine’s College in Oxford, United Kingdom. With this open-endedness pedigree Fritz Hansen conceives asking 7 cool architects to give their architectural and personal take on the Series 7. The architects are Bjarke Ingels Group, Carlos Ott & Carlos Ponce de León, Jean Nouvel Design, Jun Igarashi, Neri & Hu, Snøhetta and Zaha Hadid Architects.

series7-big4
above/below> Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) – Copenhagen and New York – inspiration and idea came from the production of the chair.

series7-ott2
above/below> Carlos Ott Architects / Carlos Ponce de León Architects – Montevideo – inspiration and idea cames from seven-story Celebra designed by the architects and where the chair could reside, a restaurant in the building located in an open-roof basement which has a vertical garden wall.

series7-ott-1

series7-jnouvel2
above/below> Jean Nouvel Design – Paris – inspiration and idea reflects design elements seen in many solutions, i.e., how apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world.

series7-jnouvel1

series7-nh2
above/below> neri&hu – Shanghai – inspiration and idea comes from a 1930s Army headquarters building they repurposed into the boutique hotel The Waterhouse. The idea of a replica, a double, a variation, a re-edition hinges on the duality between the original and the re-design. Their take on this project is to embrace this exact idea of duality and create an actual “double”. A singular chair multiplied as the individual becomes a community.

series7-nh1

series7-snohetta1
above/below> Snøhetta – innsbruck | new york | oslo | san francisco inspiration and idea comes from an idea to make the chair more of a social tool. The wood is a representation of softness in contrast to metal. A legless construction is free and indeterminate. It is versatile and simple. And maybe it can be a symbol for social interaction and playfulness? If we add even more softness to it we might be able to create a new user experience – additional functionality.

series7-zaha3
above/below> Zaha Hadid Architects – London – inspiration and idea comes from natural and fluid forms, expressive of innate structural forces, informed the design for this bespoke chair. Similar to how other projects designed by Zaha Hadid Architects address and mediate between an existing context and a new formulation of space, the provision for this chair was to create a harmonic transition from the existing shell and how it can effortlessly touch down on the ground.

series7-zaha1

This project is not the first time the Series 7 chair has been given a new look. In 2009, Fritz Hansen collaborated with designers Arik Levy, Autoban, Fabio Novembre, Jaime Hayon, Maarten Baas, Nendo and Sebastian Bergne to release the chair in seven new colors.

An exhibition will travel around the world from London to Tokyo featuring the designs by the 7 cool architects. First up is September’s London Design Festival 2015.

2014 introductions from fritz hansen.

2014 introductions from fritz hansen.

Jul 26, 2014

above> analog table and drop chair

Fritz Hansen’s 2014 product launches continue to reflect their commitment to quality and exclusive design. With a theme of “unplugged relations” Fritz Hansen introduced the Analog table by Jaime Hayon and the re-launch of the Drop chair by Arne Jacobsen to inspire us to notice and cherish each other’s presence.

After more than 50 years in hibernation, the Drop is now re-launched! The chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 as part of his masterpiece, the legendary SAS Royal Hotel (now known as Radisson Blu Royal Hotel) in Copenhagen. The Drop was originally produced along with the Swan and the Egg, but exclusively for the hotel and was never put into standard production. In addition to the original design of pliable, upholstered foam, the Drop is now available in a moulded plastic version that is especially relevant for modern interiors.

The Analog table is celebrating the authentic way of connecting with people around a table by bringing us closer. The world is filled with communication through digital devices. Analog provides a space where no device is needed. The table promotes a return to the genuine togetherness that is a stark contrast to the digital life we face with demands of constant on-line presence. Analog gives you an invitation to engage, to share, to be intimate and present – to be off-line.

Analog is not a square, not a circle, not an oval – it is a new form that takes the best from the three classic shapes and brings them together in a new, organic form. There is no hierarchy, just a beautiful platform for conversations which is a perfect match for modern relationships among family members, friends and colleagues.

Along with this theme, Fritz Hansen also announced the reunion of the entire Poul Kjærholm collection including the PK 11 chair, PK 55 desk, PK 62 and PK 63/PK 65 coffee tables.

fritz-PK62-PK63_Lifestylepk 62 (right) and pk 63 tables

Poul Kjærholm’s furniture has a special place in Fritz Hansen’s heart. The pure and beautiful lines fit naturally into the Fritz Hansen universe. Poul Kjærholm is known for using natural materials such as marble, wood, leather and canvas, which he pushed to their limits to show the beauty in their strength and the strength of their natural qualities. Throughout his career, Poul Kjærholm translated values of simplicity and a love of nature into outstanding and unique furniture. The Poul Kjærholm Collection is beautiful and timeless and produced in top quality. Every piece in this highly sophisticated collection has a strong identity and the subtle ability to light up any type of space by giving it a touch of Nordic aesthetics.

“It has always been a very refined group of connoisseurs who understands the uniqueness in Poul Kjaerholm’s extreme minimalism and it will probably remain so. However, the interest in the exclusive and outstanding design and quality strike a chord internationally. We have therefore chosen to tell the full story about Poul Kjaerholm’s design by acquiring the rights to the entire collection,” says Christian Grosen Rasmussen, Head of Design. “The new products are the PK 11, PK 51/PK 55, PK 62 and PK 63/PK 65. Each of them is a unique piece of furniture design that lends our existing collection additional character and distinction. The Poul Kjærholm Collection is much stronger when it includes all the pieces, because that offers more opportunities to combine products. Furthermore, the furniture will be made of the best materials and held to the same high and uncompromising quality standards, which is a crucial feature of the Poul Kjærholm Collection.”

Wright Auction Houses launches their Scandinavian Design Auction—showcasing pieces by Alvar Aalto, Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and Poul Kjaerholm. Known for its elegance and seamless integration of material and form, Nordic furniture was instrumental in launching the modern design movement of the twentieth century, and remains among the most sought-after modern furniture today. The lot includes several of Jacobsen’s Egg and Swan chairs, as well as an Aalto Paimio lounge chair.

Wright says, of the collection: “Designs issuing from Scandinavia in the 20th century shifted the paradigm of modernism towards a fundamentally human ethos which has been, and remains, a standard for function, quality and beauty.”

A highlight of the sale is a collection of Swedish carpets from Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, the studio that commissioned Barbro Nilsson and Marianne Richter. A graphic, yellow wool carpet by Richter will likely carry the auction’s highest price tag; it’s estimated to go for $30,000-40,000. Peruse the lot at your leisure at [ wright ]
