Port City Talks. Istanbul. Antwerp., a major exhibition of the Europalia Turkey international arts festival – 23 October 2015 > 24 January 2016 – is now open at the MAS museum in Antwerp. Curated by Turkish architect Murat Tabanlıoğlu, Port City Talks is an inspiring journey through the Bosporus via original film and photo works created by contemporary artists. Combined with archaeological treasures, the series of works tell the story of how water has shaped Istanbul and its people, drawing comparisons with Antwerp, both cosmopolitan trade hubs.

Nestled between two continents, Asia and Europe, Istanbul’s port has served as gateway to the East for centuries. Antwerp, meanwhile, developed from a port city by a river into a world-class port, has become a gateway to the rest of the world. As well as being active trading cities for centuries, with great political significance, they also have a rich past and multicultural values.

Port City Talks explores what a port and the presence of water means for the two cities, with a focus on Istanbul today. Curator Murat Tabanlıoğlu worked with 14 artists to create multimedia installations which reflect their view on modern Istanbul. The works are enriched with a selection of historical and archaeological objects, loaned from several museums and private collections, including findings from Yenikapı, Istanbul’s oldest harbor.
Through scenography made by Tabanlıoğlu Architects, the exhibition encourages visitors to create their own visual journey through a maze of interconnected walled spaces and tunnels that lead to hidden patios. The works, such as playful video portraits and digital maps featuring real time shipping data, offer a close look at the docks, cranes, shipyards, bridges, tunnels, and people.

Building on his experience as curator of Places of Memory, the Turkish pavilion at the biennial International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2014, Murat Tabanlıoğlu says, “Through studying the history and today’s realities of both cities’ ports, we have discovered certain parallels, although it is obvious that both cities are unique and, indeed, far from being similar. So we decided to call the exhibition Port City Talks. Istanbul. Antwerp., seeing this occasion as a joyous opportunity to highlight diversities and the role of people-to-people contact, respecting differences rather than always searching for similarities, and thus, multiplying the reasons for talking with each other.
“I hope this exhibition will be a motivation for further ‘talks’ on the transformation of cities, architecture and our lives.”

Chicago is billing the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) as North America’s biggest survey of international contemporary architecture, but the event is not alone. Besides Venice, whose architecture biennial began in 1980, cities worldwide hold biennial exhibitions of art, design and architecture year-round.

The first biennial, which has secured a $2.5 million lead grant from British oil and gas giant BP, is planned for 3 October 2015, through 3 January 2016. Mayor Rahm Emanuel personally solicited the lead, $2.5 million donation for the biennial from BP. The city’s biennial will present scale models, photographs and more unconventional displays hosted at the Chicago Cultural Center.

The event organizers have Chicago holding its architecture biennial in odd-numbered years with Venice historically presenting even-numbered years. The experts say this is a 10-year, five in Chicago, trial run. DesignApplause is optimistic.

The event will be “the Davos of architecture,” said the co-artistic director of the Chicago biennial, Sarah Herda, referring to the Swiss city that hosts global business and political leaders at its World Economic Forum. Herda is the executive director of the Chicago-based Graham Foundation, a grant-making architecture organization that has partnered with the city to host the biennial. Joseph Grima is the other co-artistic director, an architect and writer who co-curated the 2012 Istanbul design biennial.

There will be no admission charge for the Chicago biennial. The Venice event two-day ticket price is 30 euros ($41). The target audience will be architects and designers, cultural mavens, students and tourists.

17 september / 25 march | philadelphia museum of art

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is proud to present “Zaha Hadid: Form in Motion” on view from September 17th through March 25th 2012. Zaha Hadid, one of the most innovative architects of the twenty-first century and the first woman to receive the renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, has advanced the language of contemporary architecture and design, exploring complex fluid geometries and using cutting-edge digital design and fabrication technologies. For “Form in Motion”, Hadid will create an all-encompassing environment to display examples of the furniture, objects, and footwear she has designed in recent years as well as the prototype for her Z-Car I (2005). This exhibition will be the first in this country to feature Hadid’s product designs in a setting of her own creation. On November 19th, Zaha Hadid will be honored with the Design Excellence Award given by Collab, a volunteer committee of design professionals and enthusiasts supporting the modern and contemporary design collection at the Museum.
