2016 victory empulse tt all-electric motorcycle street-ready.

Aug 24, 2015

victory-empulse1

Kudos for getting this bike street-ready so quickly. Victory Motorcycles unveils their first all-electric motorcycle, the 2016 Empulse TT. A few previously announced all-electric notables, i.e., Harley-Davidson LiveWire and Mission Motors are still concept prototypes. This bike is really a slightly modified Brammo Empulse – Victory bought the Brammo motorcycle business in January 2015 and very little has changed in the Victory model except for a notable modification of reducing the Brammo 180-section rear tire to a 160 rear tire – a size seen on the race circuit. A lithium-ion battery pack gets a 10% boost in capacity (now rated nominally at 10.4 kilowatt hours), a new seat material and a rubber damper drive setup in the sprocket to ease abrupt throttle transitions.

Powering the machine is a permanent magnet ac (PMAC) motor. PMAC motors are suitable for variable or constant-torque applications, and this flexibility also makes PMACs suitable for variable-speed operation requiring ultra-high motor efficiency. But this efficiency does not necessarily help the driving range. This is really a city bike with a 60-mile range. A controversial feature is a six-speed transmission. This is the only electric that has a transmission, all others use clutchless direct drives. The gears put a 10-15% drain on efficiency.

Waiting to see if second generation TT will have improved styling, a belt-drive to mirror the almost silent motor and will it still sport the 6-speed gearbox. But hey, looking good in this video…

New from deadgood: upholstered ribbon seat.

Oct 30, 2012

Last year UK furniture designer Nick Rawcliffe released his cast aluminum Ribbon stool in a limited edition run of 100. Available in a brushed or polished finish, the form, which is inspired by charity ribbons, is almost more sculpture than stool. They sold out, but now UK distributor Deadgood has released an upholstered, slightly more affordable version of Ribbon stool made from recycled plastic, foam and fabric in a “cutting edge” production method that involves a “rotational molding process.” The form is then upholstered in beautiful, high quality Kvadrat Divina 3 & 2 fabrics. Cloaking the sleek, silver version of the stool in bright, friendly colors makes the design much more universal and appropriate for galleries as well as in the home.

Norway's biggest export: magnus pettersen.

Oct 8, 2012

Norway, often overshadowed by the proximity of Scandinavian powerhouses like Sweden and Finland, has been producing an impressive number of promising young designers in recent years. Foremost amongst them is Magnus Pettersen, the Sarpsborg-born (yup, that’s in Norway) designer who established his studio in London after studying Product & Furniture Design at Kingston University and Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins. Still, it wasn’t until early 2011 that Pettersen designed his first product, a wildly popular table lamp that was immediately picked up by a yet-to-be-named manufacturer when it debuted at London Design Festival that year. It’s currently schedule to retail in Fall 2013.

Since then Pettersen has designed a new lamp called Beacon that takes its design cues from lighthouses. Though the connection isn’t immediately apparent, Pettersen explained how he “wanted to find a way to reflect a warm light from an energy efficient bulb, which can seem very cold.” The inspiration for his furniture series, which he took from industrial lockers, is a little more obvious. Available in ash and aluminum, the chest of drawers, sideboard, credenza, and side table are typically Scandinavian in their focus on manufacturing and simplicity of materials, yet also completely new in their use of shiny gold metal.

Concrete house. haus bold.

Sep 20, 2009

haus1 Built in 2004, Haus Bold is made of prefabricated concrete. haus2
The industrial looking cube-shaped house carefully uses glass walls and anodized aluminum facades. The site, equally minimalistic.

haus3
haus4
haus5

Concrete walls too. However, radiused walls and window treatments, textured, polished stone tiles, and a sunny day breathes warmth.

haus6
haus8

Concrete stairways and steel handrails take us to the second floor. Skylights, yes.

haus7
haus9

The stone tile is used on the wall in the bath. Stone sink. The mirror, the geometric lines play pleasant tricks.

All black kitchen. Stainless steel powder room. Very cool in every manner of speaking. Noticing the small planted trees via the large windows, these photos might have been taken right after move-in. Curious to know if large expansive walls now display art. Definitely a bold house.

The size of the main compartment expands and contracts based on what you are carrying and is determined by how snugly you fasten the top.

Ultimately, this is one tight pack. Whatever you do, just don’t take it to traffic court.

Fiskar Karma. Ready to go plug-ins.

Mar 2, 2009

karma-2
While we wait for “plug-in” Volt and Prius to arrive in 2010 there are two exotic automakers ready to go. Tesla ( $128,000 USD two-seater ) and Karma ( $87,900 USD ) Let’s look at Karma.

karma-3
karma-1
above: The Karma S — for Sunset — concept that debuted at the Detroit auto show shares its gas-electric drivetrain with the Karma sedan but wraps it in an even sleeker two-door body that could see production within two years.

“The Karma’s material philosophy balances sensuality and accountability,” Fisker says. “We have gone to great lengths to use only environmentally conscious, classic automotive materials that support a commitment to our eco initiatives.”

Under the skin, the 4-door and 2-door cars use the same gas-electric drivetrain, which Fisker calls Q-Drive, developed with help from Quantum Technologies. The Karma will work much like the Chevrolet Volt, delivering 50 miles of all-electric range before the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine kicks in to drive a generator that will recharge the 22.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and provide juice to keep the car moving. A rooftop solar panel on the sedan comprised of 80 cells divided into four zones. Output is 130 watts, and it helps charge the battery and, when the car is parked, keep the interior cool. Toyota’s got something similar on the 2010 Prius it unveiled a few hours before the Karma S broke cover.

Beneath the car’s aluminum-and-composite body lies an aluminum spaceframe chassis that cradles two electric motors that together produce 300 kW (408 horsepower) and a stunning 959 foot-pounds of torque. Fisker claims the sedan, which weighs 4,650 pounds, will do zero to 60 in 5.8 seconds. Top speed is limited to 125 mph.

Although the Karma’s electric drivetrain is a proprietary system designed in conjunction with Quantum Technologies, the engine, air-conditioning system, steering column and other “bits and baubles” were pulled from the GM parts bin, says Fisker spokesman Russell Datz.

Fisker may be getting help from GM, but, like Tesla Motors, he’s bringing a new business model to the auto industry.

His company isn’t financed by stockholders or government loans, but by venture capitalists, including the powerhouse firm of Kleiner, Perkins Caufield & Byers. It is outsourcing much of the work to top-tier suppliers like Edag Engineering and Magna Intier, and the cars will be assembled by Valmet, the Finnish firm that builds cars for Porsche. Fisker Automotive bought a big share of Advanced Lithium Power, so it’s got a battery supplier lined up.

Still, Fisker still has to get its car certified by the feds — an arduous task that some industry insiders doubt it will complete before the end of the year, particularly since we haven’t seen running cars. It also has to establish a dealer network, but Fisker says 40 dealers will be up-and-running by year’s end. Some seasoned industry watchers say Fisker undoubtedly will get his cars built, but they aren’t betting he’ll do it by the end of the year.

The convertible added just 15 percent to the cost of building the sedan, which carries a retail price starting at $87,900. Another $18,599 gets you the “Eco-Chic” model, which has an interior free of all animal products, with woodwork made from submerged logs (no clearcutting required).

Fisker says he’s received orders for 1,300 vehicles, and he tells The New York Times his company would turn a profit if it sold 4,000 cars annually. The goal, he says, is to sell 15,000 worldwide each year.

Specification:
All electric with range extender (Q-Drive)
Dual mode option: power mode and stealth mode
0-60: under 6 seconds
Top speed: 125 mph
4-door
22 inch wheels
