ICFF 2012: moodbroom.
click > enlarge
When I came across Peteris Zilbers‘ Moodbroom at ICFF this weekend, I thought the designer had cleverly repurposed unloved push brooms into a creative lighting element, and I was actually disappointed to learn that the Moodbroom is, in fact, a brand new object made from wood, plexiglass and an unknown composite material, not, as I had hoped, from recycled materials.
Zilbers’ design asks the question, “What happens when an ordinary household object like a broom is re-imagined?” His answer is a lamp that “plays with function in everyday objects and engages users in a game that alters perceptions of a common item.” The lamp is controlled by a remote that allows you to change the light to any color of the rainbow, or you can set it to rotate through the spectrum.
You can’t tell from the pictures, but the ‘brush’ part of the broom is incredibly heavy – so heavy that I couldn’t even lift it. Yes, I have weak arms, but I shouldn’t have to be a body builder to lift a lamp. Besides, even if you don’t have a problem with the Moodbroom’s weight and materials, what about that cord? In such a simple design the cord seems like a blaring distraction and a huge flaw. Overall, repurposing the traditional broom shape into a light doesn’t strike me as a real stretch of the imagination, and the finished project has too many unconsidered elements to justify its hefty price tag ($500+).

Lamborghini new driver's wanted crash video.

when you see these cars you sometimes wonder if driving lessons come with the cars.
from the driver’s seat everything seems pretty straight forward. turn on the radio, adjust your sunglasses, a quick visual of conditions, then point and just go. this is a car that does 0>60 in 3.4 secs. see how to make a left-hand turn while sitting at a stoplight below:
we think the car in this video is a gallardo. here’s an overview: With a Gallardo replacement not too far out, Lamborghini has invested in a number of special high-performance derivatives for its entry-level car. The latest Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale pays tribute to its Blancpain Super Trofeo racecar in a package that will still be legal on the street. Limited to a mere 150 units, it surpasses the already track-oriented LP570-4 as the most extreme Gallardo ever. The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race series is sponsored by both Lamborghini and Blancpain, the self-dubbed world’s oldest luxury watchmaker, and brings racers and professional drivers face-to-face on Europe’s most challenging racetracks such as Monza, Silverstone, and Hockenheim. Google's new london hq: big hit or big flop?
Right on the heels of Apple’s announcement of its new office building in Cupertino, CA is Google’s new London HQ, designed by Penson. Is it just me, or does it look more like a really fancy dorm done up in futuristic 60s mod/pod style? I know Google treats their employees well (or so says my friend in San Francisco who gets a gym membership along with the job), but why is there so much lounge space in this office? If you scroll through the images you’ll see a room with padded, reclining benches and what I can only assume is an update on the bean bag chair – a dorm room staple. This is one of the offices many “informal meeting spots,” but whether it will facilitate a relaxing work environment or just a place to relax remains to be seen.
One of the many features is the ability to ‘draw on the walls,’ which sounds cool in theory, but how many designers sketch out their ideas on a white board in the hallway? I give it two weeks until those boards are covered with dirty jokes and amateur drawings of penises – just like a dorm.
Futhermore, I know there’s no accounting for taste, but how long are those all-white rooms (with smatterings of bright mod colors) going to stay so pristine looking? Scroll through some more pictures. What’s up the club scene decor? Royal blue walls with neon tubing for the meeting rooms? That might have worked in Tron (which they actually homage – see the last pic), but not every adult wants to feel like they’re working on the set of bad movie or in the 80s’ idea of what a space module of the future looks like.

Philippe starck: hip designer shockingly out of touch (and kind of depressing)
Philippe Starck has, for a long time, been in the enviable position of designing whatever he likes and getting paid for it. And the designs themselves always seem to be right on the cutting edge (if I can use that term without inducing your derision) – a thoughtful and unique mix of old and new and never-before-seen. Remember his genius citrus juicer that’s part sci-fi, part Beetlejuice and all parts totally clever and (deceptively) simple?
Recently, however, Starck has been having doubts about his sense of purpose, telling The Independent that not being able to save lives and tackle key global issues in his work leaves him feeling “impotent.” To that I say: get over it. You’re rich and famous and yet you still can’t save the world, boo freaking hoo. Design was never meant to solve the global debt crisis and it never will, unless, of course, you can design a better economic system and power structure for the entire world.
Still, Starck wanted to do something to better people’s lives (though frankly, Philippe, your juicer has done wonders for me already), so in an effort to design “democratic and affordable products” he made a photo booth, noting that photos “help us to exist.” Not that I disagree with that, but most people, even some of the poorest, have phones with a camera feature, which are not only mobile, but manipulable through apps, many of which are also free. And for those people who don’t have phones I doubt a Philippe Starck photo booth is coming to their corner of the world any time soon. And even if it did, it’d have to be solar powered. That, I’d like to see.
As if his photo booth idea wasn’t half-baked and out of date to begin with, Starck also bemoaned the likelihood that his photo booths would just be vandalized anyway. “Twenty years ago,” he said, “it was possible to design something pretty and people to respect it. Not now.” Oh yeah, ‘cuz graffiti is a new invention.
Graffiti bots programmed to get arrested.
two bots provide excellent example of duality: getting arrested or providing a public service. yesterday, chicago’s new mayor rahm emanuel’s budget austerity proposal passes 50-0. 500-plus municipal jobs slashed but not the graffiti crew. not many would agree but tasteful art and graffiti can improve urban eyesores that suffer from neglect. the above bot is labeled “the senseless drawing bot” in the blogosphere. can the senseless drawing bot provide a public service? i think he has the talent to do beautiful work.
below: now on the other hand this bot does not have the talent nor provides the spontaneous creative moment for the 99% graffiti artist. 1% will try it. 100% gets arrested.
above: do you think street art ( graffiti ) can be an effective agent of change?
