Carpenters Workshop Gallery presents: Atelier Van Lieshout, Sebastian Brajkovic, Andrea Branzi, Fernando et Humberto Campana, Ingrid Donat, Johanna Grawunder, Mathieu Lehanneur, Robert Stadler.
CWG aims to position design as contemporary art by narrowing further the boundaries between contemporary art sculpture and ‘functional sculpture’. The gallery develops, with its artists and designers, projects where the artistic dimension is fundamental: furniture as “functional sculpture” which is directly connected to senses, emotion and intellect. Based in London and Paris.

wheel-thrown earthenware | gertrud and otto natzler | c1955 |click > enlarge
Featured in this auction is a special collection of ceramics by Otto and Gertrud Natzler. Using clays indigenous to California, Gertrud threw vessels which Otto clothed with monochromatic glazes. Janet Kardon, curator of the American Craft Museum, writes of the Natzlers: “For Gertrud, the pot was an extension of her hand; for Otto, the glazes were the result of a controlled and skillful interaction with chemistry and the vagaries of the kiln.” The Natzlers’ remarkable partnership resulted in over 25,000 vessels and 2,500 glaze formulations. Exceptional among the collection is the Nocturne bottle, a slender, poetic form enhanced by a deep blue and violet glaze (estimate: $20,000-30,000). This example was exhibited in 1971 at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.

The A+D Architecture and Design Museum and Angeleno Magazine present a series of four salons at iconic mid-century modern homes in Los Angeles. In 1946 four musicians returne from the war and pooled their resources to create the cooperative housing group. Salon #2 will take place at the A. Quincy Jones designed MHA site office. The site is historic-cultural monument #680, with sloping glass walls and cantilevered wing as a metaphor for America’s boundless self-confidence after World War II. The building literally takes flight across the canyon.

Marni presents in this new space the 2013 edition of the project “100 chairs”, which includes models and colors linked to the idea of urban sitting rooms.
The collection, which is composed of chairs, chaise-lounges, rocking chairs and tables, has been enriched by models in bright colors designed for children. The sitting rooms have been created in color variations fit for interior spaces, featuring new models, woven patterns and combinations. Of interest, this production has been entirely made by hand in Colombia by ex-prisoners, aiming to reinforce the prisoners resettlement into social and working life.

During the Salone del Mobile 2013 MARNI meets “INHABI-TANTS. The migrating multitude”, calls into play the concepts of identity and difference, the encounter with the otherness – the being that comes to us from another world. The Inhabi-tants are small objects in form of humanoids/robots with arms, bodies, heads and feet made out of industrial waste in the shape of small sticks, spheres, semi-spheres and cubes. On April 13th and 14th a workshop will be held at Spazio MARNI in viale Umbria 42 where it will be possible to create the Inhabi-tants of the Marni family, which will join the numerous families created throughout the world. Recycled materials, as well as fabrics and components of bijou, part of the Marni collections, can be assembled to build a new Inhabi-tant. The chairs of Marni and the Inhabi-tants come from faraway and peacefully invade the spaces.
As well as a commitment to use recycled materials, the project reaffirms Marni’s involvement with charitable initiatives with a donation being made to a worthy cause. [ milan 2013 ]

Serene House is a scent line that offers all different kinds of scentilizers, scent pods, scent for home, mobile, you name it. The wax pods are not only a new line but a completely new concept which debuted at Ambiente 2013. Wax pods in themselves isn’t a new concept, however what’s new and unique is the pods remain sealed. Sealed even while they’re heated as the smell permeates through the seal. There’s no mess, very child friendly, can’t burn your hands. Also the hot plate does not get so hot in can burn you, it’s touchable. There’s also a little light inside, like a little lantern. There are three styles of warmers for the large pods: ‘Eclipse’, ‘Aerolight’, ‘UFO’. The pods are aluminum so when you’re done you recycle them.
‘torch’, one of two small wax pod scentilizers
There are two small pod styles: ‘Grail’ and ‘Torch’. The concept for the smaller pod devices remain the same but smaller. The devices plug directly into a wall outlet.
‘stellar’ and ‘sparkler’ uses ceramic tablets
‘Stellar’ and “Sparkler” are new products which debuted at the New York Gift Show 2013 last January. Similar to the pods but instead they use small ceramic tablets. You put a few drops of a Serene House Essential Oil on the tablet and turn it on. These devices are for your car or any USB device.

Broksonic’s seasonal home electrics are designed not to be put in the closet when they are out of season. We are looking at their cool mist room humidifiers. You can display them or put a long stem rose in some. Two look like a vase, another an audio speaker. The water containers are anti-bacterial, BPA-free. It boils the water to 104F and kills the bacteria. There are three power levels and a 2 and 4 hour timer settings and automatic shut-off when empty. There is an aroma therapy option: place an essential oil on a felt pad, one dose a day. The tabletop models run 19 hrs and coverage is up to 350 sq ft. All models have removable water containers with handles and no filters. Floor models come with a remote control capability.

We’re stopped by the Artek booth at Maison&Objet 2013 and talked to Simone Vingerhoets-Ziesmann, an executive vice president in New York. Simone tells us that Artek presented the first objects of their new abc Collection at Maison&Objet 2012 last September.
[DesignApplause] Simone what are you showing today?
[Simone Vingerhoets-Ziesmann] We are continuing to present and build on the abc Collection. Important pieces are the reintroduction of the stainless steel TW modular candlestick holder (1970) and the TW serving bowl (1953) designed by Tapio Wirkkala. (This abc Collection is introduced at the January 2013 New York Gift Fair, the first time in the US.)

The Siena fabrics (1954) are designed by Alvar and Elissa AAlto and have been on the European market for a few years and only sold in Artek’s own stores. Blankets, the tea towels, the bags, the trivits, the coasters are all added to the collection. There will also be seasonal additions, such as the red on white, and the white on red in the festive seasons. And more will come, from office to tabletop, from indoor to outdoor products. We will add to this collection twice a year.
This year we are also celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Stool 60. Here’s the Paimio color palette from the original (1932) collection. note: Alvar Aalto designed the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, the building that made him famous, and the colors were used in the structure: the green from the walls, the yellow is from the floors, turquoise from the handrails and walls, and the orange, black, and white are from the furniture.
