In 1937 the Chicago Association of Art and Industry invited László Moholy-Nagy to head what was to be called the New Bauhaus, four years after the Bauhaus in Berlin was dissolved in 1933 under National Socialist pressure. László Moholy-Nagy had been a Bauhaus Master from 1923-1928 in Weimar and Dessau. His teaching as well as his own diverse creative work, were characterized by a unique innovative and experimental approach to the arts.
The exhibit will showcase art and design by students of Moholy-Nagy’s schools from 1937-1955: the New Bauhaus, School of Design in Chicago and Institute of Design – with special emphasis on the Foundation Course exercises. In addition, life work of both teachers and students will be shown, from 1937 to the present.
Representing more than sixty individuals, the vast majority of the exhibit is work that has never before been seen. Material has been provided through the generous loans from private collections, in addition to work from the UIMA permanent collection and the Bauhaus Chicago Committee Archive & Collection.
This exhibit is organized in partnership with T. Paul Young and the Bauhaus Chicago committee NFP. [ details ]

A one-night only ‘maker-mixer‘ Kickstarter All-Stars retrospective takes place at MINIMAL’s new expansive studio and incubation space. Not only did these 25 curated projcts exceed their funding goals on Kickstarter, they used good design and great storytelling to connect with their audience and turn their project ideas into a reality. In many cases these projects spurred the launch of sustainable businesses long after funding was completed.
cosmonaut
MINIMAL founder Scott Wilson propelled Kickstarter to mainstream consciousness back in 2010, when he raised $1M on the platform for his TikTok+LunaTik Watch Kits. The project not only sparked new interest in wearable technology, but it shook the product design industry of its preconceived beliefs about product development.
“At MINIMAL, we fully believe in the future of crowd-funding and incubation and are vested in the evolution of these models,” says Wilson. “The Kickstarter All-Stars exhibition is a perfect opportunity to pay tribute to a handful of crowd-funded projects that truly represent the power of the independent designer/entrepreneur. With the IDSA International Conference in our backyard this year, we wanted to celebrate and highlight designers in pursuit of freedom of expression and purity of design vision.”

More than 120 international galleries from 17 countries will set up shop on Chicago’s Navy Pier next month for the art fair Expo Chicago, 19 > 22 September. Tours, panel discussions, and uniquely curated site-specific projects are on tap. And there’s plenty of big names to get excited about. Jeanne Gang and Studio Gang Architects designed the interior environment with a floor plan patterned after the city’s gridded streets; Dean Otto of the Walker Art Center curated the video artists showing at Expo Video, an exhibition area and lounge; David Salkin Creative designed a table-service restaurant to be held within the exposition; Casa Spazio will furnish the VIP lounge and Room & Board another rooftop lounge; and NYC’s Snarkitecture will create a series of upholstered foam seats under the main center atrium. The artisan appears in 1993 when the ‘Fabula‘ model was launched, the first kitchen with colored wood and doors inlaid with pictograms. For the designer Gabriele Centazzo, it represented the Mediterranean dream. In 2009 Valcucine presented ‘Invitrum‘, the first 100% recyclable base unit in glass and aluminum. In 2013, both art and tech reappear together as Valcucine’s Milan showroom creatively presents their master craftsmen who set up real workshops showing how they create inlays, mosaics and carvings. We also see the reappearance of Centazzo designing SineTempore (without time), a kitchen conceived to express the values of tradition through the recovery of various ancient handicraft techniques.
With Invitrum, the production process of recycled aluminium has the advantage of consuming only one-twentieth of the energy needed to obtain primary aluminium. Traditional kitchens usually supply base units that are installed side-by-side which means that the chipboard side panel is doubled; Valcucine’s structure has simply a single carcass side in glass. The new glass system is designed to be easily disassembled using only mechanical joints instead of glues.
In the showroom product technicians shared the tests, here Diego Skerlic, a quality official, uses an eyedropper of various stain producing ingredients such as coffee and red wine, as he helps develop fully resistant long-lasting materials.
Laura Carraro and Lisa Battistutta were introduced to Valcucine as mosaic art students and the two continue to collaborate and create for them.

Wood sculpture Padovan Giovanni carves away.
Most recently, after three years of research, Valcucine has developed a technique to make inlaid art on glass. The highly technological process is rooted in handmade craft and makes it possible to personalize a kitchen with ideas offered by artists, architects and designer or even by the home owner.

And even more recently Chicago graphic designer Rick Valicenti and John Pobojewski of (thirst) alerts us to the very same process used for the Valcucine Chicago showroom for NeoCon 2013. The installation of The Elizabeth Project (formally named E) consist of ribbons of colored vinyl cut by hand and infused in glass. ‘Elizabeth’ is the daughter of Chicago architect Gordon Gill: the collaboration done in 2009 when Elizabeth was nine. thirst used motion capture technology and custom software to sample Elizabeth’s energy as she danced in place.
