less function, more playful.
Working in the same vein as the Stuhlhockerbank, Bina Baiterl’s Mutant Lamp Rugs are a playful take on design, even if they are slightly less functional. More art piece than actual rug or lamp, Baitlel’s lamp/rug composites are beautifully handcrafted with supple leather in the most gorgeous, yet subtle tones of grey and creme. The leather mat is designed to emulate the light spilling from the lamp, only represented in a tangible form. Though Baitel’s work as an architect and designer has more practical applications, Next Level Galerie in Paris specially commissioned this series from her, giving her the enviable freedom to work on a professional and personal level.

ground – breaking lamp sets new bar for LED task lights.
maybe LED is king until a newer technology proves otherwise. out with the bluish or yellow-tinged glare – the Element lamp produces neutral, 3500K white light (and very bright), with a large footprint. its single LED casts just one shadow, unlike other lamps that contain rows or clusters of LEDs creating multiple shadows on the work surface. The 60,000-hour bulb will probably never need replacing, but just in case, it is user serviceable. best of all, it consumes less than 7 watts of energy while vibrantly lighting up a tabletop.

Dutch brand Moooi launches new collection at Superstudio in Zona Tortona, including a timber lamp by Welsh designers Fresh West.
It’s summer in our hemisphere. Long days. Warm weather. Spending more time outdoors. Here is a innovative product that you make yourself at the beach or on a picnic — the cutlery! What fun!
The cutlery (Do!) and an extension cord (Thrush-In) that stores nicely in its own felt container is designed by Arihiro Miyake. The utensils are fashioned by hand and you also make that fashion statement. The designer labels the cutlery disposable but we propose the environmental statement. Throw them in the dishwasher!.
These are just some of the items found in New York mid-May. The main draw was the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Javits Center, but there were many off-site events to go to. One was the Hardcore Finnish Design exhibit featuring 20-plus Finnish designers. (more…)
