About Phil Patton

Phil Patton is a contributing editor at Departures and Esquire magazines, a contributing writer at Wired and an automotive design writer for The New York Times. He was a regular contributor to The New York Times House and Home section and, in 1998, originated the “Public Eye” column. He has written many books including: Made in USA: The Secret History of the Things That Made America (Grove-Weidenfeld, 1992), which was named a New York Times notable book of the year; Bug: The Strange Mutations of the World's Most Famous Automobile (Simon & Schuster, 2002); Michael Graves Designs: The Art of the Everyday Object (Melcher, 2004); and Dreamland: Travels Inside the Secret World of Roswell and Area 51 (Villard, 1998). He has also written for Art in America, ARTnews, Connoisseur, Geo, Harper’s Bazaar, Men’s Journal, The New Republic, New York Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, Rolling Stone, Smithsonian, Travel + Leisure, Traveler, The Village Voice and Vogue. Patton was Editorial Consultant on the Guggenheim Museum’s “Motorcycle” show in 1998 and Consulting Curator for the “Different Roads” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1999. In 2000 he was consultant and contributor for “On the Job: Design and the American Office” at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Cellophane House™ chronicles the conception, assembly, display and disassembly of a five-story, off-site fabricated dwelling made of transparent, recyclable materials commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for the exhibition Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling.   

Designed by Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake and their architecture firm KieranTimberlake, Cellophane House™ takes a radically different approach to off-site fabrication, reinventing the way buildings are assembled, what they are made of, and the experience of living in them. It demonstrates an end-of-life strategy that, enabled by an innovative structural frame and variety of connectors, makes disassembly and waste-divergence inherent in the building’s construction.   The book contains a detailed discussion of the house and 105 color photographs and illustrations. The iBooks version contains a time-lapse video of the assembly process.

last year’s auctions and the growth of events like Design Miami, not to mention the postal service’s upcoming series of stamps showing name designers suggest that 2011 may be a big year for collecting design.
But as Adam Lindemann explains in his new book on the subject, for Taschen, Collecting Design. collecting design is not as simple as collecting painting or photography. Lindemann, himself a collector of art and design and author of a previous book, Collecting Contemporary, shows how designer names, producer identity and uncertain supplies make collecting more complex. New style limited editions by star designers add to the issues. The book’s format is interviews with collectors, dealers, curators, and others—32 of them. With a useful schedule of design auctions and fairs around the world and a glossary of terms. These are fun and flavorful in themselves—savor Karl Lagerfeld’s commentary for instance.

Victoria Milne, Director of Creative Services at the New York City Department of Design and Construction spoke at the SVA’s DCrit lecture series.

An interesting point: most people gain about a pound of weight a year. If you walk about five flights of stairs daily, you can keep that pound off. Making stairs in public buildings more available and attractive can encourage people to use them. In such small but pervasive ways, architecture and design can improve public health. In the nineteenth century, infrastructure had to deal with contagious diseases so the emphasis was on sanitation, clean water and so on. Today’s diseases are chronic diseases of “energy”—and many of the appropriate infrastructure changes parallel the changes needed to reduce overall energy consumption.

pininfarina’s latest one of a kind car.

The Italian design house Pininfarina rolled out its latest one of a kind car: a channeling of the original Lancia Stratos built for German businessman Michael Stoschek. There is an irony here: it was Pininfarina’s rival, Bertone, then headed by Marcello Gandini, that produced the original 1970 design. The update retains the wedge-shaped body, but updates its details — and tailors its cockpit to the owner’s tastes and dimensions.
