London-based designer Philip Crewe has “always been fascinated by how things work, why some products successfully capture people’s imagination, aid them in every day life or just make them smile. What works, what doesn’t and why. As a designer,” he continues, “I want to create ideas that work.”

His latest project looks like it works really, really well. Even if you haven’t already watched the video, you can see that I’m talking about a folding bike, so let’s just get that elephant out of the room. Yes, it’s a folding bike. But this isn’t your typical middle-aged-dude’s-attempt-at-being-hip-with-the-technology folding bike. It’s not some wannabe futuristic, pseudo-techie contraption. In fact, when it’s unfolded it looks like your classic fixed gear.

The only bummer is that Crewe has no intention of actually producing these baby blues. “Making one was enough hassle,” he said, adding that “it’s such a simple design, anyone with a lathe and an old steel frame could make one.” So it looks like your classic fixie because it is – just slightly modified. Hey, if Ray Ban made folding Wayfarers it was only a matter of time until the other hipster staple came in a folding model, too.
